IRVINE UNIVERSITY 37, PIONEER 0
WHITTIER >> After a fast start to the 2015 season when Pioneer High School started off 5-0, the Titans have reversed their fortunes this year with a 0-3 start, albeit with a very young team.
The host Titans ran into a balanced University of Irvine and fell, 37-0, Thursday night at Dick Torres Memorial Stadium in a nonleague game.
Leading the way for University was senior running back Sam Winder with a game-high 103 yards rushing and three touchdowns. He broke off the longest run of the game with a 69-yarder, which led to a 1-yard score.
Trojan quarterback Thomas Keeling had 75 yards passing on a perfect 4-for-4 performance and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Austin White ran for 47 yards and had three receptions for 70 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Senior running back Juan Avalos ran for 80 yards on 14 carries to lead the Titans and senior running Junior Lopez had 26 yards on six carries. Junior wide receiver Kyle Dighton had seven receptions for 27 yards for Pioneer.
Pioneer coach Chuck Willig: “We’re young and we showed every bit of it. They’re a good football team and well-coached and get after you. Our quarterback (sophomore Davon Benjamin) is young and definitely an athlete and a kid who can play, and we’re hoping we can groom him and make some plays down the road.”
