That was not how the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy volleyball players envisioned Thursday night’s Mission Valley League match playing out.
FSHA had grand plans of taking down league-leading Marymount at home and staying entrenched in the league title race. Instead there was stunned silence following a humbling 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 Marymount victory that got out of hand quickly and gave Marymount (18-3, 5-0) command of the league race.
“We knew the pressure of this game and the meaning of it and to come out with that loss is hurtful,” FSHA’s Pittsburgh-bound Kayla Lund said. “Marymount obviously played a great game. They’re always competitive and they’re fun to play, but we didn’t exactly do what we needed to do.”
FSHA had pushed Marymount to the limit in a five-set loss on Sept. 20 and had confidence about playing in the cozy confines of its home gym.
“They’re good, but they’re beatable,” FSHA’s Ellis DeJardin said. “We couldn’t muster the strength or the energy tonight and that’s unfortunate because we know we can beat them. We have the players, the dynamic and the chemistry, and that’s what hurts the most.”
Marymount’s passing was on point throughout the match and its blocking helped neutralize the powerful Lund, who had a season-low seven kills to accompany 14 digs.
DeJardin led FSHA with 11 kills and 12 assists and libero Maddie Pernecky contributed 10 digs.
