BOYS BASKETBALL
MAYFAIR 70, LA MIRADA 65
LAKEWOOD — A pair of freshmen boys basketball players put on a show at Mayfair High School on Wednesday night as the Monsoons came back to beat La Mirada 70-65 and take over first place in the Suburban League.
Despite playing shorthanded, La Mirada (16-4, 4-1) held a lead for most of the game, thanks to 36 points and 14 rebounds from freshman Shemar Morrow. Mayfair freshman Josh Christopher scored 13 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter while the Monsoons (9-9, 4-0) outscored the Matadores 26-16 in the final eight minutes to take the victory.
After going to the bench with foul trouble in the first half, Christopher bounced back just in time to clinch the victory. His 3-pointer and breakaway layup gave Mayfair its first lead, 59-58, with four minutes to play.
With less than a minute left, Christopher extended the Mayfair lead to 68-65 with an aggressive drive to the basket through contact. He missed the ensuing free throw and La Mirada missed two possible game-tying 3-pointers. Christopher’s free throws clinched the win.
Mayfair’s Josh Christopher: “I really wanted to play (in the second half), so I had to take advantage of my open looks when I got back in. I had to find my shot no matter what.”
