Banning's Smith one of the elite football players in the country
News Release:
BANNING - When Banning High School (Banning, Ca.) football player Derron Smith was named "most valuable defensive back" at the National Underclassmen Elite 100 football combine held July 6th at the Home Depot Center in Carson, it was a well known fact that his stock would rise dramatically.
Smith has since been rated the number three (Class of 2010) cornerback prospect in the nation by the ULT 100 behind Peniel Jean of Palm Beach Florida and Khiry McQuay of Hillsborough Florida.
In a press release from the Elite 100 staff Smith is described as "One of the most explosive football players around, makes great plays all over the field".
The event in Carson attracted some of the best football players in the western U.S. and was attended by coaches from USC, UCLA and Fresno State.
Smith, a junior, qualified for the Elite 100 as a quarterback but was elected to participate as a defensive back because he believes the DB position is what he will play at the college level, according to an Elite 100 statement.
In the Elite 100 combine, players are tested in various drills, such as 40-yard dash, three-cone shuttle, vertical leap, broad jump and bench press. After the testing they go through one-on-one drills, then finally finish the day with 7 on 7's.
The coaching staff at the combine selected Smith as the defensive back MVP after he put up impressive numbers in the individual drills including a 35-inch vertical jump. But what iced the award, the coaches said, was his game play
Smith was physical in the middle of the field, they said. In the seven-player scrimmage, he made acrobatic interceptions, including one over the middle in which he elevated over the offensive player for the interception.
Rivals.com writer Rick Kimbrel was at the event and wrote that "defensive back, Derron Smith (5-10, 165, 4.6) from Banning ... had a pretty good leap, plus he had a good overall day and earned the camp's defensive back MVP. He was very athletic and had a good jump on the ball."
Smith is quarterback of the Broncos and also plays basketball at Banning High School.
Smith's college prospects look good as he has already had contact from several colleges including Washington, Oregon and Stanford.
