YUCAIPA - The Writers' Gallery is offering several upcoming workshops and classes for aspiring writers interested in honing their writing skills in children's books and novels, and for parents interested in advancing their children's creative writing.

On Tuesday, January 13, 20, and 27, Diane Adams, author of two children's picture books, Zoom!, (Peachtree, illustrated by Kevin Luthardt), and I Can Do It Myself! (Peachtree, illustrated by Nancy Hayashi 2009), the illustrator of A Home For Salty (written by Stephanie Stuve Bodeen.), will take you through the steps of writing a successful children's book.

Adams' workshop will including plotting, illustrations, how to submit for publication and the finished product. Included in the workshop is manuscript critique provided by Adams.

This is an intensive workshop for those who are not only passionate about children's book writing, but who dream of publishing their own children's books. Getting attendees published is the end goal. The course is designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced writers.

The workshop is from 9 to 11 a.m. for three consecutive Tuesdays beginning Jan. 13.

The fee is $60 for non-members and $30 for full-time members. But only 10 spots are available.

The Writers' Gallery presents: "Your Novel's Critical Opening Chapter," on Saturday, January 17, from 3 to 6 p.m.

What is the most important chapter in your novel? Some say it's the opening, others argue it's the ending, but if your opening chapter drags or puts an editor to sleep, the rest of the wonderful story that follows will never be read.

Learn the techniques to take your chapter from draggy to dynamite!

Some agents say they can tell in the first paragraph if the piece is worth reading. They may read another few paragraphs, perhaps the entire page, but if the writer hasn't presented at least the first of the essential elements by then, off the manuscript goes with a reject stamp.

Do you know what they're looking for? Have you introduced the 5 essential elements in your opening chapter?

Brenda Hill, author of Ten Times Guilty, Plot your way to Publication, Finding the Words, Am I Wife or Daughter, and soon to be released Beyond the Quiet, will show you how to prepare your first chapter to capture an agent or editor's attention.

"Brenda Hill's knowledge in grammar and line editing is extensive. She has a talent for spotting sentence structure errors and word usage problems. She also has a keen eye for strong writing," Wendy Rosnau, A Thousand Kisses Deep.

Bring a copy of your own first chapter and join us for a compressive session. Cost is $40 for non-members, $20 for full-time members, with only 10 available spots.

The Writers' Gallery will present the "Children's Creative Writing Class" on Saturday, January 10th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

Do you have a young writer in your family? Does that writer need an outlet for his/her creativity?

Taught by credentialed teachers, your child will spend the morning writing, editing and polishing a piece of writing to "publish" with friends and family.

Diane Mierzwik has a bachelor's degree in English and taught all grade levels during her 18 years experience teaching. She is a published author, and a mom.

Noelle Kiely is a credentialed teacher and reporter extraordinaire for the News Mirror. As a mother she understands the importance of allowing children an outlet for their creativity.

Give your child the gift of his or her dreams, the pursuit and expression of his/her imagination. The fee is $20 per participant with only 10 spots available.

I would love to join your group as I have been writing children's stories for many years and want to learn more about content, editing, and publishing. When are you open and can I just drop in or is it by appointment? Thanks. Lynda
