YUCAIPA - Campus monitors deal with all kinds of issues, but at Oak Valley Education Center their duties can be a bit more challenging than the norm.

"To be a campus monitor at Oak View means one minute you are dealing with elementary students who have emotional issues," said Oak View Principal, Sam Spencer, "and the next you are dealing with high school kids in our Community Day School."

Meeting that challenge, day in and day out, is Treavor Maddux, who came to OVEC in 2005. And for his outstanding service to the school, Maddux was honored as Oak View's "Classified Employee of the Year," at Tuesday's Yucaipa-Calimesa Joint Unified School District's school board meeting. At the meeting the school board presented Maddux with a certificate recognizing his achievement.

But at OVEC, Maddux duties go beyond monitoring students. He also solves technological problems that often times leaves staff calling for help. Spencer says that Maddux is a computer expert. When problems arise, Maddux comes to the rescue.

"We come up with all kinds of computer problems that have people scratching their heads, but Treavor always seems to figure out what the problem is," Spencer said during the ceremony. "Words cannot express how valuable his expertise is in the area of technology at Oak View."

However, in his campus monitor role, he has become a leader who has stepped up and taken a lead role with confidence and, "the support from those he leads," Spencer said.

Spencer got somewhat of a surprise when Maddux' mother requested a transfer to OVEC to work as a part time monitor. But mother and son work well together even though mom is being directed by her son, Spencer said.

"I could not have asked for two better employees that keep everything in perspective," Spencer said.

Campus monitors duties focus on student safety. But at OVEC the school's students have a diversity of emotions which seemingly would require a degree in psychology or behavior management, parenting skills, and, "a whole lot of patience," Spencer said.

"Treavor has honed these skills as well as being an intervention expert and he is quick in making correct judgement calls. He has a sense of humor that keeps us on our toes."

Maddux graduated from Yucaipa High School and owns his own recording studio. And he uses his own life experiences to motivate others, Spencer said.

"Treavor is a kind and compassionate spirit," Spencer said. "He is respected by our students, our entire staff, and I personally admire him for his honesty and Integrity."
