The Public is Urged to Vote for "People's Choice" Award

BANNING, CA - The Banning Mural Council's annual Art Banner Auction will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 6 p.m. at the Cultural Alliance - Banning Women's Club building at 175 W. Hays St. in Banning.

This year's event will include cash prizes and ribbons for the top 3 entries. There is a nominal fee of $12, which includes an Italian dinner courtesy of Russo's Italian Kitchen and RSVP is recommended at (951) 922-4811.

This series of 27 banners were on display for almost six months along Ramsey Ave. and San Gorgonio Street in the downtown district as part of the Mural Council's annual beautification efforts.

The 7-foot long banners, hand painted by area artists, will be auctioned off with starting bids typically starting at $100. 50% of the proceeds from the banners sold will go back to the artists as a "thank you" from the community and the other 50% will serve to fund the next series of banner blanks.

This community beautification program has been in place for four years and for the first time a slate of jurors were secured to view the banners before they were installed on the city's lamp posts.

Local muralist and fine artist Sara Parker, gallery proprietor Jenny Dunaway of Jack's Fine Art in Beaumont, and Fred Grose, formerly of Banning and now an art collector residing in New York selected the top two entries.

Those artists, Cynthia Capetillo of Poppet Flats and Corinne Bradrof of Banning will be presented cash prizes and ribbons by Mayor Bob Botts at the event.

The public is invited to be a juror by logging onto the Mural Council's new website; www.muralsofbanning.org and place their vote for the "People's Choice" award. The banner earning the highest votes by March 20, 2009 will receive a cash award and a ribbon at the auction.

For the first time, the public will also be able to place bids online. The highest bid amount for any banner, whether from a live bid at the auction or placed earlier online, will win the banner so online bidders are urged to make their highest and best offer.

The Banning Mural Council was founded by local businesswoman and artist, Claudia Keeling, who will also have a banner entered in the auction.

For additional information or high resolution images of the banners please contact Pat Hughes, President of the Banning Mural Council. See contact info below.
