The "first" Yucaipa High celebrates the early years

YUCAIPA - A celebration, some reminiscing, a one big happy family reunion, that's what's planned for those who attended the "first" Yucaipa High School campus located on Sixth Street.

Now known as the Yucaipa High School 9th Grade Campus, the old school will come alive on Friday as former classmates gather for Yucaipa High School's 50th Anniversary, "A Celebration of the Early Years."

Jack Brennan taught at the school from 1964 to 2002. He has a lot of fond memories. In fact, he expects reminiscing to be one of the highlights of the event. Lots of stories will be shared. Memories of sports glories, school shenanigans, school romances, and "do you remember the time ..." will most likely be recalled and shared.

For Brennan, his memories involve heat and pests.

"I remember the flies," Brennan said. "If you opened your mouth you could have one fly right in. And we had no air conditioning and the windows didn't (offer much relief) from the heat."

Various classrooms will be set up with memorabilia celebrating the different decades of YHS, along with a display of memorabilia in the gymnasium.

Pleasant memories. So sweet to recall, so sweet to retell. And to preserve those decades-old memories an Autograph Wall has been constructed. "We want who ever attended the school to write their fondest memories on the wall and the Yucaipa Historical Society will preserve it," Brennan said.

The Early Years will take on a 1950s-60s theme, Brennan said, with live Rock-N-Roll music, a DJ, a car show featuring 50s and 60s vintage vehicles, and with 50s and 60s pictures on display of campus life.

But the event isn't limited to former Yucaipa High students. It's open to the community, Brennan said. And it's free. No admission charge, and no charge for the hot dogs and hamburgers to be served - until they are all gone, Brennan was quick to add.

Ninth grade campus ASB Advisor, Terry Troy, said that the response has been very good and he expects a good turnout.

"They (former students) are coming from all over," Troy said. "We want this to be a community event, a place to have fellowship and talk over what they've done since leaving the school."
