BEAUMONT, CA - The Beaumont Unified School District Board of Trustees, at its May12, 2009 meeting, considered alternatives to the District's before- and after-school programs for the 2009-2010 school year.

In the interest of cost savings, the District is considering ending its Connections program and instead offering parents the option of using services provided by the City of Beaumont or the Boys and Girls Club of the San Gorgonio Pass.

The Board also:
• Held a first reading of a new Administrative Regulation that would allow for the naming of District facilities after "individuals who have made significant and extraordinary contributions to the District for a minimum of 10 years." A Facilities Naming Committee would study all proposals and submit recommendations to the Board of Trustees.
• Heard a presentation about the Beaumont Adult School Parent Academy, which offers a series of workshops, seminars and events that provide parents with information designed to assist with their children's education.
• Approved the sending of final layoff notices to 25 certificated employees.
• Honored the District's two teachers of the Year, Robin Coppage and Ian Young, as well as the winners at the individual schools.
• Honored Ryan Odle of Beaumont High School, who placed fourth in the state History Day competition for his Louis Armstrong exhibit.
• Recognized District staff members who helped coordinate the 2009 United Way campaign.
• Recognized Mike Sturman for receiving the Western Riverside County Association of School Managers' Media Excellence Award.
• Recognized Megan Jones for receiving the Riverside County Bar Association Good Citizen Award.

The next Board meeting is scheduled for May 26, 2009 in the Board room at the District Office, 500 Grace Ave. in Beaumont. The meeting officially begins at 5 p.m. The Board then goes into closed session to discuss personnel and legal matters, then reconvenes in public session for the main portion of the meeting at 7 p.m.
