YUCAIPA - It was a proud night for 164 Crafton Hills College (CHC) students, who were recently recognized for outstanding achievement during CHC's Honors Celebration, the college's annual event for distributing scholarships and recognizing community service.

Family, friends, faculty, and fellow students attended the event to watch and support the college's top students as they received their respective honors.

In addition to being awarded scholarships, students were recognized for such achievements as earning high grade point averages, serving as student leaders in the Associated Student Government (ASG), participating in the CHC community service oriented club Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS), being recognized in "Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges," earning high grade point averages (Honors) and earning Medals of Distinction for extraordinary service to the college and for academic distinction.

CHC President Gloria Macias Harrison congratulated the students and told them that their accomplishments were a reflection of their success up to this point in their lives.

"Honorees, we congratulate you on your perseverance and accomplishments," Harrison said. "We are proud of the many students who have attended this fine institution and who have gone on to become successful in their chosen careers."

"We are one step in your journey to achieving all your goals and dreams," she said. "Never stop learning. Never stop dreaming. We wish you much, much success."

Twenty-two-year-old business major Arcadio Torres of Yucaipa was presented with the President's Award, which is considered the college's most prestigious award of the night. It is awarded to a student who maintains a high grade point average and contributes time and service to the community and college.

Torres is a strong proponent of the "entrepreneurial spirit."

"When you see a problem, instead of complaining, get people together to make a change," Torres said. "The people who are innovative and create change are those who create new opportunities for others. That's what keeps the world going."

At CHC, Torres' goal was to create new opportunities for students to get involved.

Torres founded the CHC chapter of the business organization Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), and he also served as the vice president of the Southern California PBL. At the Annual California PBL State Business Leadership Conference in Long Beach this spring, the CHC PBL was presented with the Membership Achievement Award and Torres was recognized in the Who's Who in California PBL.

In addition to his activities with the PBL, Torres has also served as the CHC 2007-2008 Associated Student Body president, the student senator of the CHC Inter-Club Council, the business editor of the student newsletter, and he was selected to serve as an intern in the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU).

As a student senator of the Inter-Club Council, he worked with CHC Student Life Director Ericka Paddock to increase the number of student clubs on campus.

"When you get involved, you find that you are working with people that you may otherwise not have contact with," he said. "It teaches you a lot about yourself and others, and how to work as a team."

"What is needed heavily in the world is for people to learn more how to collaborate," Torres said. "We need to bring people together to make change for the better."

Torres plans to transfer to the University of California in Santa Barbara, where he is interested in pursuing global studies, business, and economics.
