YUCAIPA - Niles Hunter Nimmo, 15, was awarded the Boy Scouts' highest medal for saving his mother's life after a boating accident on the Colorado River on June 22, 2008 during a family outing. Niles is a member of the Yucaipa Boy Scouts, Troop Nine.
Lisa Nimmo and Niles were riding their Sea-Doo watercraft doing maneuvers on the river with Lisa riding ahead of Niles, said father and husband Allan Nimmo.
Suddenly Lisa swerved into Niles' path to avoid hitting an (unknown) obstacle in the water. Traveling at speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour, Niles couldn't avoid crashing into his mother, Allan Nimmo said.
Lisa was thrown into the water unconscious. Niles dove into the water and swam to his injured mom lying face down in the water. He raised her up and turned her over in the water to prevent her from drowning.
Niles managed to get his mother close to the shore where rescue people took over. For his heroic efforts he was awarded the Boy Scouts, "Medal of Honor," on May 5th.
"Niles saved his mom's life," Allan Nimmo said. "The rescue people said that Niles did all the right things and they sent letters commending him."
