Yucaipa City Council news
YUCAIPA - At the March 11 City Council meeting it was brought up that the State Department of Finance suggested to governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that the state can take from the counties and cities up to 8 percent of the property tax that the two entities collect to help the state with its current budget deficit.
Mayor Dick Riddell said, "Twice within 10 years they can raid the city. They are supposed to pay it back within three years with interest. Our principal source of income is property tax and it would hurt us quite significantly if we lost 8 percent of it."
Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program - The council approved $21,500 to pay for such things as stop signs, speed bumps, speed limit signs, and flashing beacon lights to slow down traffic at various neighborhood streets throughout the city.
Flashing beacon (yellow) lights warning drivers that a pedestrian crosswalk is ahead were recently installed at both ends of the crosswalk at Oak Glen Road and Second Street by Yucaipa Community Park.
Recently a car hit a child attempting to cross Oak Glen Road at Community Park with her family - before the flashing beacon lights were installed. Council Member, Denise Hoyt was pleased that lights were finally installed.
"It's a very dangerous crossing," Hoyt said. "Several times during the day kids are crossing. I'm glad we are finally moving on that."
Flashing beacon lights will also be installed at Wildwood Canyon Road and Canyon View Drive, which leads to Wildwood Canyon State Park. And on Date Street a speed limit sign and reduce downhill speed sign will be installed. Other streets are also targeted to have signs and speed bumps installed.
Property Owners Business Improvement District - As part of the phase two redevelopment for the uptown business district, about one-half of the 48 property owners returned ballets approving landowners' funding for the "market component" of the phase that calls for expenditures on such things as advertising, activities, events, and entertainment.
