BEAUMONT, CA - Even in bad economic times, the Beaumont Unified School District comes through. Donations to the United Way by District employees jumped to $26,000 this year, a $5,000 increase over the previous year.
Jeanette Marlar, Eastern Region Director of the United Way of the Inland Valleys, told the District's Board of Trustees at a recent meeting that, "this District always steps up to the plate." In the last five years, she said, Beaumont employees have contributed about $100,000.
Lisa Tarrats, the District's Facilities Accounting Technician, is the District's United Way Campaign Manager. "The total collected in the Pass was $66,000," she said. "Of that, $26,000 came from Beaumont."
Tarrats attributed the increase to an increased awareness of problems people are having.
"People know how hard it is right now," she said. "We really need more help."
An added incentive this year also may have helped boost contributions. Those who increased the amount of their donations deducted from their paychecks received a Care Club membership, which entitled them to discounts at local businesses.
Tarrats said the increased giving makes her feel good because more people can be helped. "The more we can help people, the better."
Last year, according to the United Way of the Inland Valleys Website, http://uwiv.org/, 38 member agencies helped more than 287,056 people through 113 funded programs. Funds are distributed based on community needs and priorities.
