Canelo Alvarez in Los Angeles for second opinion on fractured right thumb

Newly crowned junior middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez of Mexico was in Los Angeles on Wednesday to get a second opinion on the avulsion fracture in his right thumb sustained during his ninth-round knockout of Liam Smith on Sept. 17 in Arlington, Texas.

Alvarez fights under the Golden Boy Promotions banner. Its president, Eric Gomez, said Alvarez was going to visit hand and wrist specialist Dr. Kenneth R. Sabbag to make sure that the therapy ordered by Alvarez’s personal physician is all it will take for Alvarez’s recovery.

Gomez said that depending on how things go, Alvarez could be ready to fight again by “early next year.” As for an opponent, Gomez was asked if Willie Monroe Jr. remains a possible opponent for that next fight.

There was talk from Gomez before Alvarez beat Smith that the winner of the undercard fight between Monroe (21-2, 6 KOs) and Gabriel Rosado, who also fights for Golden Boy, could be next for Alvarez. Monroe emerged via wide unanimous decision. But Monroe said in a statement this week he now believes Golden Boy has no intention of giving him the fight.

“I don’t think it’s Canelo himself, but it is his team,” said Monroe, who boxes for Banner Promotions. “I know Canelo would fight me. I think it is his trainers who fear that they can’t prepare Canelo for my style.”

Monroe, of Rochester, N.Y., is a southpaw.

“If he is a true man, they should stick to their word,” Monroe said. “The plan was for the winner of that fight to be able to fight Canelo. They thought Rosado would win, and he would just be a guy that would get pounded by Canelo.

“If the shoe was on the other foot, and it was me who did not want to fight an aggressive fighter, I would look like a punk.”

Gomez during an Aug. 29 conference call did not say the winner of Monroe-Rosado would definitely get Alvarez, but he did say, “The winner of this fight very well could be fighting Canelo in December.”

Well, December wasn’t going to happen once Alvarez injured his thumb, but that hasn’t changed Monroe’s desire to fight Alvarez. Gomez on Wednesday addressed that, saying all options remain possible.

“As is customary with Canelo, we’re going to leave all the doors open,” Gomez said. “We would consider anybody. That’s what’s customary. We’re not going to close any doors.”

Peter Quillin retains middleweight title, stopping Gabriel Rosado in 10th on cuts

Peter “Kid Chololate” Quillin of Brooklyn retained his middleweight world title when he stopped Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia in the 10th round on cuts at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday night.

Rosado (21-7, 13 KOs) complained afterward that this was a world championship fight and that it should not have been stopped in the championship rounds. His cut on the left eye lid was absolutely gruesome.

Interestingly, Quillin (30-0, 22 KOs) was well ahead on the judges’ scorecards at the time in a fight that appeared very close. The Showtime announcers could not believe one judge (Kason Cheeks) had Quillin winning a shutout. Another, Waleska Roldan, had Quillin ahead 89-91. And Ron McNair had Quillin up 87-83.

Gabriel Rosado stoked to be fighting under fellow Philly fighter Bernard Hopkins

Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia will be in a very big fight when he challenges Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin(29-0, 21 KOs) for his middleweight world title Saturday at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City (on Showtime). That it will come on the undercard of the light heavyweight title fight between champion Bernard Hopkins of Philadelphia and Karo Murat of Germany makes it that much sweeter for Rosado (21-6, 13 KOs).

“Never did I think I’d have the opportunity to fight on the same card as Bernard,” Rosado said. “I thought by the time I had the opportunity, he’d be gone, but he’s still here kicking (butt). Its crazy how that played out and I’m just blessed to have been around Bernard in so many training camps and to learn old school boxing, which is a lost art now.”

Hopkins is 48.

Peter Quillin to defend middleweight title against Gabriel Rosado

Middleweight champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin of Brooklyn will attempt to make the second successful defense of his title when he takes on Gabriel Rosado of Philadelphia on Oct. 26 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City (on Showtime), Golden Boy Promotions announced.

They will tangle on the under card of the light heavyweight title fight between Bernard Hopkins and Karo Murat.

Quillin, 29-0 with 21 knockouts, really likes this matchup.

“Rosado is a quality challenger who always comes to fight, and because of our competitive styles the fans are going to get a great show on Oct. 26” he said.

Rosado, 21-6 with 13 knockouts, is stoked to be getting another shot at a major title. In his first, he was stopped in the seventh round by Gennady Golovkin in January at Madison Square Garden.

“I’ve never lost in New Jersey and I don’t plan on starting now,” Rosado said. “I’ve chased a world title for a long time and while I respect Quillin for giving me this new opportunity, I’m going to have to take that belt and bring it back to Philly.”
