Indio International Tamale Festival is this weekend

Tamale lovers…the annual Indio International Tamale Festival is this weekend (December 1 and 2).

The event, which has become a Dine 909 tradition in the last couple of years (usually in conjunction with Saturday’s Palm Springs Festival of Lights parade), runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The festival location is bounded by Miles Avenue on the north, Requa Avenue on the South, Towne Street on the west and Smurr Street on the east.

It’s definitely a trek for most of the Inland Empire, but it’s worth a visit at least once to see the variety of tamales sold at the festival, including seasonal flavors like pumpkin.

It’s not all about the tamales. There are other food vendors, too.

There’s also a parade (Saturday at 10 a.m.), lots of entertainment (including War, 4:30 p.m. on Sunday), tamale-eating contests (Saturday), carnival rides and more at the free event.

‘Tis the season…to watch holiday candies being made at Logan’s Candies

It’s that time again, and I think this is the year we’ll finally get to see it!

What is it? The making of holiday candies at Logan’s Candies in Ontario.

You, too, can see it for yourself as the store is offering candy making demonstrations throughout the holiday season.

The next demos will be 9:45 and 11:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. tomorrow (December 1), during the city’s Christmas on Euclid craft fair.

Upcoming demos will be 5:30, 7 and 8:30 p.m. December 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Space is limited, so it’s a good idea to show up 15 or 20 minutes early.

Logan’s and its candy cane maker, Jerry Rowley, were the subject of an NPR article and interview back in 2007.

Redlands-based Sugarbird Desserts is going to make Christmas a little sweeter for four of its Facebook fans.

The bakery is hosting a contest to give away four six-packs of its delicious cinnamon rolls.

All you have to do is head to this post on Sugarbird’s Facebook page and leave a comment saying “SHOW ME THE ROLLS!”

The four winners will be chosen at random on December 18.

One comment per person, please, and the winners must be able to pick up their sweets on Christmas Eve from J.D. Myers, 122 E. State St., Redlands.

At the time of this writing, there’s already 171 comments on the post, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance! And as they say, you can’t win if you don’t enter.

If you haven’t tried Sugarbird’s desserts, you can usually find them between 8 and 11 a.m. Saturday mornings at the Certified Farmers Market on Redlands Boulevard between Fifth and Sixth streets.

Sugarbird Desserts’ cookies are also used in à la minute’s decadent ice cream sandwiches.

Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour schedules hiring event for its Riverside reboot

The countdown to the return of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour to Riverside is moving right along.

Get your “Happyitis” in working order, because the restaurant is hosting a job fair from noon to 6 p.m. December 3 to 5 next to its future home at 3610 Park Sierra Drive.

The chain is looking to fill 160 positions, including servers, hosts, bussers, cooks, food runners, experienced expediters, dishwashers, office personnel, fountain artisans, porters, and managers.

Although hospitality experience is a plus, having an outgoing, friendly personality also helps.

Prospective “cast members” are encouraged to complete and print the interactive job application ahead of time and to arrive early to the job fair, as more than 2,000 applicants attended both the Rancho Cucamonga and Brea hiring events.

Hosts and servers who get called back will participate in group auditions December 11 to 13.

The Riverside location is scheduled to open in January 2013.
