A quick rundown on the CIF volleyball semifinals

Five area teams are still in the hunt for a CIF volleyball title.  Here’s a list of the games and something on each.

DIVISION 2
Chino Hills (24-6) at Irvine Beckman (24-11) – The Huskies are the Baseline League champion and advanced to the semifinal with a quarterfinal upset of N. 3 seed Orange Lutheran. Senior Alexis Cardoza, whos has committed to Cal State San Bernardino, leads the team in kills (278) and is second in digs (265). The other notable standout is Utah commit Kenzie Koerber (217 kills), also a senior. Beckman was the third-place team in the Paciofic Coast League. It advanced with a 3-0 win over the No. 2 seed El Dorado.

DIVISION 4
Claremont (20-7) at Sierra Canyon (28-3) – The second-seeded Wolfpack come in with a nine-match win streak. They beat Glendora in the regular season finale to earn a share of the Palomares League title, the school’s first in the sport in 18 years. Senior Simone Bliss boasts a team-high 201 kills. USC commit Emilee Rohrer is second (177). The catalyst of the offense is setter Kyle Robinson who has committed to Oregon. Daniel Reighter, the team’s sixth coach in as many years, does also got to a 6-2 offense with Merisa Marquez the other setter. Sierra Canyon, the Gold Coast League champion, is the third seed. The Trailblazers are led by 6-2 sophomore May Pertofsky (377 kills) and senior Cameron Antoine Dillon (259 kills, 103 blocks).

DIVISION 7
Riverside Notre Dame (26-9) at Ontario Christian (20-5) – The teams are no stranger to each other, coming out of the same league. Ironically Notre Dame was only the third-place finisher in league and Ontario Christian the fourth. Notre Dame won both regular season matches 3-1 and 3-2 (15-12 in fifth). Sophomore Annaka Jorgenson (388 kills, 177 digs) is the dominant offensive weapon for the Knights. Notre Dame is more balanced with three players boasting 200 or more kills.

Division 8
Pomona Catholic (24-7) at Grace Brethren (19-6) – The Pacers are the third seed, with Grace Brethren the second. Pomona Catholic was only the fourth-place finisher in its league but the top team teams were ranked 1-2 in Division 7. Junior Franki Piloto is the offensive leader. Grace was the second-place team out of the Tri-Valley League. The Lancers are balanced, with three players boasting 150 or more kills and another at 110.

Division 9
Capistrano Valley Christian at Upland Christian (26-3) – The second-seeded Eagles were CIF champion and state runner-up last year and have mounted a nice run despite losing their top two players from that team. Freshman Jenna Holmes (371 kills) has been a key newcomer. She is the younger sister of one of the graduated players Rachel Holmes. Junior Makenna Lundquist (218 kills) has also excelled.  CVC, Co-Champion in the Express League, is the third seed. Sophomore rightside hitter Keara Rutz is the marquee player.

Chino Hills volleyball team shows promise with tournament win

Chino Hills volleyball coach Andy Farrow wasn’t surprised his team got off to a slow start.

He was appointed late when the previous new coach hired had to back out of the job due to a full-time job commitment. And he only has about half a schedule, the first match coming about two weeks after most other teams played theirs.

But the Huskies have progressed, just in time for Baseline League play.

Chino Hills won the championship of the Ayala Tournament over the weekend despite playing without top player Kenzie Koerber who was making her official visit to the University of Utah to which she had already verbally committed.

The Huskies defeated Corona Santiago 25-20 in the one and only set of the title match. The final had to be limited to that so that the teams wouldn’t surpass the limit of playing 12 sets in a day.

Other big wins in that event came against Claremont, a team to whom they lost a non-league match to their second match of the season, as well as Riverside King.

“It’s a matter of getting to know each other,” Farrow said. “We played a solid six rotations and served well. It was just having more matches to get comfortable.”

Senior outside hitter Alexis Cardoza was named tournament most valuable player while junior setter Brooke Magill and junior libero Reva Blitz also earned All-Tournament honors.

Senior Taylor Johnson and sophomore Raeleen Saunders split time in the front row in place of Koerber while junior Kendra Lim played Koerber’s spot in the back row.

The Huskies, now 11-1, continue league play on Tuesday against Upland.

Chino Hills volleyball team looking to play catch up

The Chino Hills volleyball team comes into the new season trying to play catch up – literally.

Coach Dana Buzzerio, who had been in the program for eight years, stepped down after last season and Christina Johnson was named her successor. But Johnson had to resign before even coaching the first match because of new job responsibilities in her full-time gig at Cal State San Bernardino.

Enter Andy Farrow, also the assistant for Randy Bohlmann with the very successful Damien boys’ program. He interviewed in July but wasn’t formally approved until this week. So the girls have practiced with an on-campus faculty member looking on.

Farrow has a daughter that went through the program so he was familiar with the school and the program’s history so he is a good choice, albeit a late one.

The Huskies won’t play their first match until Sept. 13 and they will have only two before starting Baseline League play. Farrow was able to pick up a tournament at the end of the season but he is still looking to pickup a tournament or a handful of individual matches.

The light schedule is likely the result of the administrative turnover. Who knows where the ball was dropped. Not only did the Huskies have more than one change in coaches, the school also changed athletic directors.

“We’re going to be two to three months behind every team we’re going to be playing against,” Farrow said. “We just have to do what we can do and tray and get where we need to be by the end of the season.”

The Huskies do have talent. Senior Kenzie Koerber has committed to Utah and senior outside hitter Alexis Cardoza is a returning first team All-Inland Valley selection. That’s a good start.

Farrow will be looking to fill a void at setter as junior Courtney Buzzerio transferred to Orange Lutheran. Farrow said he has four candidates for that spot but he doesn’t have a lot of matches to experiment.

Baseline competition should be tough with Rancho Cucamonga looming as heavy favorite. St. Lucy’s is always in the playoff mix and Los Osos seems much improved. We’ll see how this drama plays out.

Roundup: Ontario Christian boys XC qualifies for CIF prelims

AMBASSADOR LEAGUE >> Ontario Christian finished third in the team standings of the 2015 boys league championships 5k event. The Knights qualified for the CIF prelims following the top three finish. Jakob Eichor was the top finisher for the Knights following a second place finish with a time of 16 minutes, 18.2 seconds.
Volleyball
CHINO HILLS 3, ST. LUCY’S 0 >> Kenzie Koerber had 19 kills for the Huskies in the victory over the Regents, 25-15, 25-13, 25-21. Alexis Cardoza contributed to the victory with 10 kills and seven digs while Courtney Buzzerio had 38 assists and two aces. The Huskies will compete in the Redondo Union Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

Setter Sarah Dixon of Chino Hills named All-American

Sarah Dixon talks about playing Los Osos and winning Baseline title Tuesday night

Senior setter Sarah Dixon of Chino Hills High School earned third-team All-American honors by Under Armour. She is the lone local earning the prestigious honor.

Dixon, who has committed to University of Arizona, was the catalyst of a Huskies team that is ranked fifth in CIF Division 1-A. The team wrapped Baseline League play unbeaten with a convincing 3-0 win at Los Osos Tuesday.

On the season Dixon has tallied 900 assists, an average of 9.7 per set. She also ranks second on the team in digs with 214. She also has 48 service aces and 26 blocks.

Chino Hills volleyball standout commits to Naval Academy

Senior Darby Minton (above, in pink jersey) of Chino Hills High School has made a verbal commitment to Naval Academy.

Minton, a 5-foot-9 libero, has registered 218 digs for a Huskies team that is 13-5 overall, 2-0 in Baseline League play and ranked seventh in CIF-SS Division 1-AA.

She visited the Annapolis-based service academy a couple of weeks ago and it completely changed her mind.

“Before I went there I wouldn’t have imagine myself going to any branch of the service,” she said. “But I got a good feel of the team and what to expect and got to know the coach. I even slept in the dorms so I got to know some of the players. I really felt good about going there.”

Minton isn’t sure about a major but is considering oceanography or operations rescue. She knows balancing athletic and academic endeavors as well as military commitment will not be an easy task.

“It’s going to be about time management and prioritizing,” she said.

As a junior at Chino Hills Minton recorded 348 digs, contributing to a 19-9 showing and spot in the CIF quarterfinals where the Huskies lost 3-1 to Harvard-Westlake. She was a first-team Sierra League selection.
