WOODCREST CHRISTIAN 10, ONTARIO CHRISTIAN 8 >> Kayla Dennis won two singles matches for the Knights (0-14, 0-10) in the loss to the Royals. The Knights had two of their doubles teams win two of its matches.

Volleyball

WOODCREST CHRISTIAN 3, ONTARIO CHRISTIAN 2 >> Jacklyn Post and Madison Maynes had 11 kills for the Knights in the loss to the Royals, 22-25, 18-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-12, in Ambassador League play. Maynes also had 20 assists and three aces while Annaka Jorgenson had 12 kills and two blocks. Ontario Christian will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Loma Linda Academy.

Boys Water Polo

CLAREMONT 18, BONITA 5 >> Bruno Snow had six goals for the Wolfpack (14-6, 5-0) in the Palomares League victory over the Bearcats. Johnathon Wong scored five goals in the win while Matt Turk added two goals for the Wolfpack. Bryan Plat served as the Bearcats leading scorer with four goals. Claremont will play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday against Ayala.

ONTARIO CHRISTIAN 3, ARROWHEAD CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 0 >> Annaka Jorgenson had nine kills for the Knights (10-4, 4-3) in the Ambassador League victory over the Eagles. Jessica Jones had six kills and two aces for the Knights. Ontario Christian will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Aquinas.

CLAREMONT 12, AYALA 8 >> Bruno Snow had six goals for the Wolfpack (10-6, 2-0) in the Palomares League victory over the Bulldogs. Jonathan Wong contributed with four goals while goalkeeper Kellan Grant had 10 saves for the Wolfpack. Claremont will play at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday against Diamond Bar.

RIVERSIDE NOTRE DAME 15, ONTARIO CHRISTIAN 3 >> Hannah Bradvica won three matches in singles play for the Titans in the Ambassador League victory over the Knights (0-11, 0-7). Both Joanne Kim and Lauren Henry won a singles match for the Knights.

Chino wins Diamond Bar boys water polo tournament

CHINO 10, DAMIEN 8 >> Jakob Robinson had seven saves and three steals for the Cowboys in the Diamond Bar Tournament Gold Division Championship Game over the Spartans.
Robinson finished with 41 total saves in the tournament.
Adrian Hernandez scored four of his 21 tournament goals in championship game.
 Enrique Hernandez and Jeremiah Hernandez also contributed with two goals a piece.

Claremont boys water polo team chalks up two tournament wins

The Claremont High School boys water polo team had a good day at an invitational in Santa Barbara.

The defending CIF champion Wolfpack pulled out a 17-16 overtime win against La Serna. Jonathan Wong led the way with nine goals, three assists and a steal while Bruno Snow added six goals, three assists and three steals. Lenny Davis and Ian Waasdorp rounded out the scoring with one each.

Kellan Grant had seven saves in goal.

Claremont also registered a 9-4 win over Oaks Christian. Snow and Wong again led the way with four and three goals respectively. Mat Turk pitched in with two goals, one assist and two steals.

The Wolfpack are now 4-4 but the losses have come to quality teams in higher divisions.
The team played in the Santa Barbara event which was held in conjunction with the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness. It is selling the Pink shirts and donating proceeds to Cancer research. Snow and Grant started a club called CARE (Cancer Awareness Reaching Everyone).

David Albers and Webb find success at Ayala Water Polo Tournament

David Albers and the Webb Schools dominated the Ayala Tournament with two victories on Thursday.

Albers scored nine goals for the Gauls in the victory over Temecula Chaparral, 22-10.

Travis Alvarado scored seven goals against the Pumas while Mitchel Fargo contributed with four of his own.

At the net, goalkeeper Max Sapozhkov had 11 saves. He also had seven saves in Webb’s second game of the day, which resulted in a 18-2 win over Nogales.

Albers, Stephen Silides and Andre Ardelan each had three goals against the Nobles. Philip Kraus led the Gauls with four goals.
Webb will play in the quarterfinals against Charter Oak today at 6 p.m.

Alta Loma water polo wins program’s first league title

The Alta Loma Braves girls water polo team won its first league championship in the program’s history following a 10-2 victory over Don Lugo in Mt. Baldy League play.

Prior to the season, the Braves had set several goals in mind which included going undefeated in league and winning the Mt. Baldy League title.

While the Braves fell one game short of going undefeated following the loss to Colony, 5-4, on the road, the league title was still in reach.

“As soon as the buzzer rang it felt so good to know we made history. It felt like we were on top of the world and no one could take that from us,” senior Lexy Poveda said. “It was satisfying to know that all our hard work paid off.”

For many of the seniors members, they are able to recall the the growth they have seen from within the program over the last few seasons.

“We were all so happy and excited with how far we have come. From Last season, we have all grown together and become the players that we are,” said senior Raeann Lopez. “I love all the girls to death and a big thank you to coach Kevin (Nesbit) for pushing us to our limits even when we didn’t like it.”

While the only goal for the Braves to accomplish this season is a CIF Title according Nesbit and he believes the only one standing in their way is themselves.

“Our biggest challenge is ourselves and realizing goals can be met with team work,” he said. “This group is the foundation for where we want to go.”

The Braves will wait for the CIF pairings to be announced to determine their first game in the playoffs.

The Braves end the regular season, in which they didn’t have a pool of their own, with an 19-8 overall record and a 9-1 league record.

Alta Loma Girls Water Polo wins San Gorgonio Water Polo Tournament on Dec. 27, 2014

Lexy Poveda and the Alta Loma Braves defeated the Murrieta Mesa Rams, 7-4, to win the San Gorgonio girls water polo tournament Dec. 27.

Poveda scored three goals for the Braves while Sydney Smith contributed with one goal and three saves in the victory over the Rams, who were looking to win their third consecutive San Gorgonio Tournament Championship.

Leading up to the game with the Braves, the Rams had won its first three games of the tournament by at least 15 goals apiece.

Braves head coach Kevin Nesbit was aware of the Rams accomplishments in the tournament, but felt the biggest challenge came from within.

“The mindset was really to go in and control our offense and keep the momentum in our favor,” Nesbit explained. “Our defense presented a strong case for our team in this tournament, it was our offense that was going to make or break us.”

Raeann Lopez, Leanne Butler and Kyleigh Marquez contributed to the Braves’ offense against the Rams, scoring one goal apiece.

Nesbit also believes that several lessons were learned during this tournament that can be applied going forward, including the importance of goal setting and teamwork.

“I make sure the girls are strong of mind, in and out of the water. I push them to achieve their goals, whether that be attending college, developing their skills to a certain elevated level, being a better well rounded person or student,” Nesbit explained. “We also learned the importance of teamwork (in the water). Coming together is the beginning; staying together is progress; putting forth effort together is success…..today I saw success.”

Lopez stated that the tournament showed the unity between the players on the team this season as they prepare for their goals heading into league play.

“We all have come together as a team and it showed this weekend,” Lopez said. “We are going to focus on trying to be 10-0 during (league play) and make our way to CIF.”

Teammate Monica Martinez believes that the tournament provided the team with opportunities to build off of.

“We have more opportunities to improve the way we handle ourselves and can learn how to surpass the difficult situations we face,” she said. “The tournament have given us many opportunities to play against teams that are a higher division, such as the team we played in the finals, which was a Division II team.”

The Braves (8-4) will play at 3:15 p.m. Jan. 8 against Montclair in the Mt. Baldy League opener.
