Oregon State gives Miller, Carter football players scholarship offers

Big-time college offers are coming in for area football programs, and not all of them are schools that have gotten top scholarship offers in recent history.
Miller, which is coming off three straight 1-9 seasons, is one of those.
Soon-to-be senior linebacker Freddy Livai, who is listed at 6-foot-3 and 251 pounds, got offers from Oregon State, Washington, Boise State and Northern Arizona, and previously received offers from Colorado and New Mexico.
He’s not the only Rebel getting noticed. Quarterback Malik Flowers, who will be a junior, received an offer from Weber State. Flowers threw for 925 yards and six touchdowns last year and was also the team’s leading rusher with 848 yards and five touchdowns.
Oregon State is also focusing its efforts on Carter, where the Beavers have made offers to two more players.
While Lokeni Toailoa has gotten a lot of recruiting focus for more than a year, his brother Leni, a wingback/defensive back,is getting noticed now and received an offer from Oregon State. His teammate, Marcus Strong, also a wingback/defensive back, was offered a scholarship by Oregon State.

Bloomington High officially hires Brian Kidd as new football coach

It’s been eight years since Brian Kidd was a head football coach, but on Friday he was officially introduced as Bloomington’s new coach. Kidd was confirmed at Thursday night’s school board meeting.
“He’s a proven winner bringing in a good staff and we share the same philosophy to turn it around right now,” Bloomington athletic director Chris Brickley said.
Kidd, 39, was the head coach for Riverside Notre Dame in 2004, then took over for Mike Churchill for the final three games of the 2005 season at Carter. Kidd was also the head coach at Carter in 2006-07 before stepping down. He led Carter to a 7-4 record and a playoff berth in his first full season at Carter in 2006.
He last coached at Riverside Ramona in 2013 as the defensive coordinator and spent last season recovering from back surgery.
“I was ready to get back into it,” Kidd said of applying for the Bloomington job.
Bloomington has been 4-26 the past three years, but Kidd thinks the Bruins can surpass that win total this upcoming season alone.
“Probably 5-5 would be a great turnaround,” he said. “That’s realistic. When I took over the Carter team that was 3-7 the first year, we went 7-3 (in the regular season). I have the same aspirations for this team, to be competitive and be in every game.”
Part of Kidd’s plan is to get athletes from other sports playing football. One of those sports is wrestling, where Bloomington co-coach Vince LaFarge is expected to be on Kidd’s staff.
Kidd will not be an on-campus coach; he will continue to teach at Jehue Middle Schools, which is in the Rialto district.
Brickley said hiring Kidd wasn’t impacted by him being off campus.
“We wanted to get the best coach possible,” Brickley said.

VIDEOS: Carter’s Lokeni Toailoa picks UCLA

Carter coach Alex Pierce talks before Lokeni’s commitment

It may be hard to see on the video, but Lokeni had 2 hats in the bag: one USC and one UCLA

Lokeni Toailoa talks about picking UCLA. He showed some maturity in not getting too tied to the coaching staff, because he knows one or more of those coaches might not be around in the fall of 2016.

Could Kyon Clark join Kenny Clark at UCLA?

While several high school athletes committed to colleges long ago, and others have been courted and are expected to make their decisions in the next week, there are other future college athletes who fall into different categories.
TX Body: One of those is Carter High nose guard Kyon Clark, who originally committed to Montana, but has since de-committed.

Kyon Clark

Carter coach Alex Pierce said that Clark changed his mind when Montana underwent a coaching chance as former coach Mick Delaney retired.
So, what’s next? Possibly UCLA, where Clark’s brother Kenny, the former Sun Defensive Player of the Year, was a standout sophomore defensive lineman last season.
According to rivals.com, Clark is scheduled to make a visit to UCLA this weekend although Pierce could not confirm that. Although there has been no official offer yet, UCLA is the only possibility out there for him other than Montana. Rivals has Clark listed as a three-star recruit.
“I think people are missing the boat on him,” Pierce said. “He’s been able to move really well with his weight. He’s really flexible. He can put his nose to his knee and he’s stronger than his brother at this age.”

Notre Dame builds relationship with Carter’s Lokeni Toailoa

While the Carter Lions football program is in the offseason, the recruiting process continues for linebacker Lokeni Toailoa.

Lokeni Toailoa

Toailoa had representatives from both, the San Diego State University Aztecs and the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football programs visit him this week.

Both schools are among the 18 colleges to offer Toailoa a scholarship.

He also stated that it is the fifth time the Fighting Irish have taken a visit to speak with him since he received the offer from them.

“We have already established a good relationship,” he said. “It’s huge for any program (to take the time to visit) but having a prestigious program like Notre Dame makes it that much more special.”

While only a junior, Notre Dame has expressed to Toailoa where he would fit within its defense.

“They like me at (middle) linebacker,” he said. “Especially since they have two seniors at the spot now who will be gone soon, but they also believe my versatility could have me at any one of their linebacker positions.

In regards to where his dream school may be at, Toailoa stated that as he grew up, he did have a dream school, but since the recruiting process has taken off and it’s all changed.

“My dream school is (which ever college) offers the best education in what I want to do,” he explained. “…a place I can see myself attending even if I wasn’t playing football.”

While Toailoa believes the process has changed his mind set on certain things, he still believes the process has been a positive experience.

“It’s honestly been a fun experience but I know time is running out,” he said. “I plan on really looking into schools now and narrowing it down soon.”

REV, Carter expect key players back for Citrus Belt League football showdown

Malik Lovette Homecoming

REV star Malik Lovette, who is bound for Oregon, is expected to be 100 percent for Friday’s showdown with Carter.

GAME PREVIEW: Redlands East Valley (8-1, 6-0) at Carter (8-1, 6-0), 7 p.m.
It’s really no surprise that these two teams are playing for the league championship. “When the schedule game out, we didn’t want to tell the kids this, but we figured this would be for the league title,” REV coach Kurt Bruich said.
There’s a lot at stake in this game, more than just a CBL title, which would be Carter’s first in football. REV is ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Inland Division, and would presumably be seeded first if the Wildcats win.
Both teams are getting healthy at the right time. For the first time all season, REV is getting 6-foot, 220-pound Sr. RB/LB Taimon Faimalo back from injury after he broke his foot in the team’s scrimmage. “You feel good having him on third-and-short,” Bruich said. WR/RB Malik Lovette, has played sparingly in recent weeks with a “hamstring issue,” but is 100 percent this week, Bruich said.
Carter, meanwhile, will be getting back RB Aaron Brown and LB Dayvion Hodnett, who had been out with concussions. Lineman Lynell Smith had returned two weeks ago from a torn ligament in his foot, but is “close to 100 percent” this week.
Carter coach Alex Pierce wants to use his offense and defense to limit REV’s big-play capability. “We’ve seen on film, when teams pile up on Malik, other guys can make big plays. We need to do a good job of tackling in space,” Pierce said. “We need to limit their possessions and we need to score touchdowns when we get in the red zone. Field goals aren’t going to win this. We’re going to have to put up some points.”

Bruich expects Carter to give his team a battle in the trentches. “They’re a very tough group of kids,” he said. “They’re big and physical.”

Zamore Zigler of Carter High picks San Jose State

Carter High senior Zamore Zigler seen above from an interview during his junior year after returning a punt for a touchdown, has committed to play football at San Jose State, coach Alex Pierce reports.

Pierce said Zigler has not yet made his trip to San Jose State.

Zigler, recruited as a running back, has only 47 yards rushing for Carter this season. But he has been explosive once again as a returner, returning four kicks (three punts and one kickoff) for touchdowns this season. He also has an interception and six pass deflections as a defensive back

Last year, he had five touchdowns on returns, including one against Colton, about which he is talking in the interview.
