With new league, Big Bear’s football schedule looks different

Big Bear is leaving the De Anza League after this season, hoping to not only keep some of its old rivalries but to renew some ones that have lapsed.
Athletic Director Ron Perkins said that not only are the Bears going to continue to play De Anza League’s Twentynine Palms in football in the future, but they are in negotiations to bring back rivalries with Rim of the World and Aquinas. Big Bear last played Rim in 2011 and Aquinas in 2009.
Big Bear, a school of about 700, is close to filling the rest of its nonleague slate for next year. It’s not always easy to find schools of comparable size that are willing to make a trip to Big Bear, and the new league is only a four-team league, meaning Big Bear needs seven nonleague opponents.
Perkins said that he’s been contacted by several schools.
“I’m getting phone calls saying, ‘We’re a school of 3,000 and we want to come up for team bonding,’” Perkins said. “That’s great, but we can’t play you.”
Perkins said the only week they’re not in negotiations to fill is Week 6, which is after most schools have started league play.
