100 Percent Soccer Column: Ready for a packed summer of soccer?

rose

So I suppose it’s tempting fate to write a column about the busy summer of soccer that lies ahead and then elevate the wrong team to the final four of the UEFA CL (not that the two alert Barcelona fans who noticed really minded).

Anyway, the corrected column is here, so mark your calendars or stick it on your fridge or whatever to ensure you don’t miss a game.

The Galaxy came back from another early goal to put up a five-spot on previously undefeated Real Salt Lake on Saturday, winning 5-2. L.A. extended its unbeaten streak to five games, and has scored nine combined goals in the past two games.

Midfielder Emmanuel Boateng was one of the many standouts on Saturday, scoring once and adding two assists. He was making his second MLS start and not only showed his speed, which is unmatched on this team, but some good quality. He sent in a sensational cross on Mike Magee‘s goal in the 26th minute and also assisted Giovani dos Santos‘ brilliant chip shot in the 45th minute.

“He’s got energy, he’s got pace, and he’s got quality in the wide areas as you see from his assist,” midfielder Steven Gerrard said. “And he got off the mark today with a cheeky little finish. Certainly up for man of the match, the little fella’.” Continue reading “Galaxy rout Real Salt Lake” »

Galaxy ‘keep heads above water’ despite injuries ahead of Salt Lake matchup

The Galaxy host the only undefeated team in MLS on Saturday as they face Real Salt Lake on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. If not for a stoppage time goal by Marco Pappa in the final 30 seconds of a 1-0 L.A. loss to Colorado, Saturday’s matchup at StubHub Center could have been between two undefeated teams.

At 3-1-2, the Galaxy’s bad days haven’t ended too badly, even when goalkeeper Dan Kennedy suffers a torn groin on the first goal kick of the season or when Steven Gerrard goes down with a calf strain 30 seconds into a rivalry game at home. Through a rash of injuries that started literally in the first minute of the season, L.A. has “managed to keep our heads above water,” head coach Bruce Arena said. New stricter MLS security checks start as LA Galaxy hosts Real Salt Lake Saturday in Carson

stubhub

If you were planning to take luggage to Saturday’s Galaxy game at StubHub Center you can forget it.

Big bags and other bulky items are out, small is in.

From the (edited) MLS press release:

Beginning Saturday a new minimum standard bag policy and guest screening measures will be instituted at all 20 MLS venues bringing MLS events in line with security measures taken by the other professional sports leagues in North America.

“Public safety is a top priority and the enhanced security measures will ensure that fans are able to continue to enjoy MLS and SUM events in a safe environment,” said MLS president and Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott.

Under the new security policy, all guests will be fully screened upon entry into MLS venues. The screenings will be conducted via a full pat down or with the use of a search wand of magnetometers. Each venue will decide which procedures and protocols will be used.

Banned from MLS stadiums are:

  • Large purses
  • Coolers
  • Briefcases
  • Backpacks
  • Luggage of any kind
  • Computer bags
  • Camera bags
  • Any bag larger than 14’’x14’’x6’’

In addition, all bags will be subject to search upon entry.
