Galaxy announces end-of-the season team awards

Galaxy midfielder Romain Alessandrini was selected the 2017 Galaxy Player of the Year and Ashley Cole earned Defender of the year honors, the club announced Thursday.

In his first year with the Galaxy and MLS, Alessandrini ended up as one of only four players to record at least 10 goals and 10 assists this season. Alessandrini led the Galaxy with 13 goals and added 12 assists.

Cole made 29 starts and was the Galaxy’s most dependable and consistent defender.

Playoff positions settled in Major League Soccer

The regular season concluded Sunday around Major League Soccer. The knockout-round, single elimination playoff matches are set for Wednesday and Thursday.

Toronto FC, New York City FC have first-round byes in the Eastern Conference. Seattle and Portland have byes in the Western Conference.

French defender Michael Ciani signs with the Galaxy

The Galaxy officially announced the signing of French defender Michael Ciani, Saturday.

Ciani, 33, has spent time in France, Spain and Italy. He will occupy an international roster spot and will begin training with the club this week.

Ciani made more than 100 appearances in France with FC Lorient and FC Bordeaux. He played with Lazio in Serie A, RSC Charleroi in Belgium and Espanyol in Spain.

“We targeted and acquired Michael as a player who can immediately strengthen our backline,” Galaxy General Manager Pete Vagenas said. “He is a valuable signing that will be an important piece of our roster. We are happy to add him to our team and look forward to him joining the squad next week.”

Dos Santos brothers called into Mexican national team

Both Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos will join the Mexican national team for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The brothers will join El Tri following Sunday’s Galaxy’s game against San Jose. They will miss the Sept. 2 game against Colorado.

Mexico hosts Panama, Sept. 1 and visit Costa Rica, Sept. 5.

Galaxy complete transfer of Jelle Van Damme to Royal Antwerp FC

A move that had been rumored for a couple of weeks finally became official Friday as the Galaxy announced it had transferred defender and captain Jelle Van Damme to Belgium’s Royal Antwerp FC.

The Galaxy will receive $235,000.

Galaxy ranked as MLS’ most valuable team according to Forbes

The play on the field hasn’t lived up the standards of the Galaxy, but that hasn’t stopped the value of team diminish.

According to Forbes Magazine, the Galaxy has surpassed the Seattle Sounders as MLS’ most valuable team. According to the report, the Galaxy has an operating income of $9 million and brought in an estimated $63 million in revenue.

The Galaxy franchise is valued at $315 million, up 19 percent.

MLS increases number of substitutes for upcoming postseason

Major League Soccer announced Thursday that a fourth sub will be available for teams during the upcoming postseason.

The extra sub will only be available if the game goes to extra time and may be used regardless of the number of subs a team makes during regulation.

Other competitions that have experimented with the fourth substitute include the FA Cup, Scottish Cup, FIFA Confederations Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
