Southwest Final: South Hills loses heartbreaker, 23-17 in OT

Saturday’s Southwest Semifinal
El Dorado 23, South Hills 17, OT

Robledo’s Thoughts: If you’re supposed to play every high school playoff game like it’s your last, then South Hills High School football players can wake up on Sunday and feel proud of their effort. It’s no fun being on the losing side of one of the most dramatic football games of the season, but as Bogan said afterward, it’s just a game.
The Huskies trailed 10-0 and looked like they were about to get blown out when El Dorado QB Kane Wilson threw a deep pass inside the Huskies’ 10, but Dorian Wells stripped it and Eric Glaster pounced on the fumble, which changed the momentum. The Huskies kicked a field goal with less than a minute left in the half, and only trailed 7-3 at the break.
Late in the third quarter, Huskies linebacker Chris Bowden picked off Wilson, and returned it to the Hawks’ nine, setting up Deen’s nine-yard TD pass to Dimitri De La Fuente to tie the score, 10-10, with 1:47 left in the third quarter.
The Huskies went in front when Eric Glaster picked off Wilson, and returned it 55-yards for a touchdown and 17-10 lead with 5:06 remaining, which set up the dramatic final moments. The Hawks tied the score 17-17 on Wilson’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Sheldon with 1:08 remaining. Maybe it’s the hometown reporter in me, but I swear he was out of bounds on that catch.
But Deen, who was 10-0 as a starter, showed why, leading the Huskies back with an 11-yard pass, then a clutch 36-yard strike to De La Fuente with 52 seconds left, and following a roughing penalty on Deen, the Huskies suddenly had the ball on the Golden Hawks’ 9-yard line with 52 seconds left.
A couple of runs set up kicker Michael Scott, but he lost his footing on a muddy 25-yard game winning field goal attempt as time expired, sending the game into overtime.
“He didn’t get a good plant,” Huskies coach Steve Bogan said. “We thought it was a sure thing. But it happens. It’s not his fault.”

Below: Huskies players look on as FG attempt sails wide

The Huskies had the ball first in overtime, but couldn’t move it, and Scott’s 41-yard field goal attempt came up short.
On the next play, Wilson, who threw for 226 yards, scored on a 25-yard run up the middle to send the top-ranked Golden Hawks (12-1) to the championship game, where they will play for their second consecutive title and put their 12-game winning streak on the line Friday against Trabuco Hills.
Obviously, it was a bitter defeat, but Bogan put it in perspective.
“It’s hard, it’s a big disappointment, especially in that situation,” Bogan said. “You don’t want to get overly philosophical. You’re lying if you don’t say it’s a big disappointment. But it is a game. This is when you learn the most. You celebrate when you win, and you learn what you’re made of when you don’t. We’ll be fine.”

Friday’s game

No. 3 Trabuco Hills 27, No. 4 Charger Oak 3
Robledo’s thoughts: Don’t blame it on the weather or the officiating, Trabuco Hills was just better on Friday night. Maybe if the score was 10-3, or 13-3, you could make that argument, but the Mustangs outscored the Chargers 20-0 in the second half to punch their ticket to next week’s final. Mustangs running back Matt Wagner rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown, and the Mustangs defense limited Chargers back Kanaan Snowden to just 51 yards. Chargers QB Chris Allen was 6 of13 for 55 yards. Charter Oak had its chances. Mikey Harrell had a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown called back early in the first quarter because of holding. And just prior to that, it appeared Charter Oak had picked off Cory Brandt’s first pass and had a clear path to the endzone, but the Chargers DB couldn’t control it.
Joshua Aussem scored with 5:47 left in the half to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead, but the Chargers came right back and appeared to tie the game on Allens’ five-yard touchdown run with 24 seconds left, but the side judge made an absolute horrible call, flagging Allen for a face mask when all he did was straight arm a defender out of the way. Check out our video on Saturday if you don’t believe me. The Chargers settled for a field goal, so instead of possibly being up 14-7, they were down, 7-3.
Again, that wasn’t the difference. The Mustangs were clearly better in the second half, moving the ball at will. And they didn’t beat themselves in the muddy conditions, fumbling just once early, and not getting flagged by the officials until late in the fourth quarter. I thought the wet conditions took away Charter Oak’s athleticism, particularly with Snowden, who didn’t have a lot of chances in the open field. Wagner, more of a straight forward bruiser, just followed his blocks and picked up first downs six and seven yards at a time. Congrats to Charter Oak on a great season, and good look to Trabuco Hills in the final.

Breaking News: Wilson football coach Robert Oviedo resigns

Wilson football coach Robert Oviedo resigned this week. We’ll have more in Thursday’s newspaper. Oviedo will remain a teacher at the school, but wanted to take a year off to spend more time with his family. Oviedo has two kids, and his wife Dr. Monica Oviedo is the principal at Santa Fe. It was a good season for the Wildcats, who beat Los Altos to recapture the “Wheel” for the first time in nine years, and they advanced to the CIF-SS Southwest Division quarterfinals. Oviedo was at Wilson for seven years, and finishes with an overall record of 34-41-1.

Best comment from OC’s Adam Maya: “Devin Deleon leads a consistent running game, Kane Wilson runs the offense well, and that defensive line is nasty. I dont see this team losing.”

OC Register on Trabuco Hills -Charter Oak
Best Comment from OC’s Artie Casas: “Momentum is such an X-factor in football. I have to give the edge to a battle-tested Trabuco Hills team that seems to be peaking at the right time. I like the Mustangs to control the tempo of the game with their running attack and edge out Charter Oak to avenge last years playoff loss 24-17.”

Tribskin Pick’em, your predictions and ours. Finally, it’s here, the O.C. vs. SGV

Steve Ramirez and Fred J. Robledo going head-to-head throughout the season.

Records:
Robledo: Last week (4-1); Season (167-55)
Ramirez: Last week (5-0); Season (169-53)

Notes: Looks like Ramirez is a step closer to earning that lunch bet. The difference, he picked California over South El Monte, and the Condors pulled it out. I don’t think I can catch him, and to be honest, I don’t want to. I’m going with El Dorado this week, but I would love to see Charter Oak and South Hills in next week’s final.

Friday game Stories from the OC Register on this week’s SGV opponents.
El Dorado 27, El Toro 9
By BRIAN SMITH

Behind a four-touchdown performance from senior running back Devin Deleon, El Dorado took another step toward defending its CIF-SS Southwest Division championship with a 27-9 victory over El Toro in a second-round game Friday night at Trabuco Hills High
The victory, the Golden Hawks’ 10th in a row after a season-opening loss to Esperanza, was much like what El Dorado has done all year: get out to a quick lead and let the defense do the rest. El Dorado put up 264 yards in the first two quarters and held the host Chargers (6-6) to just 99.
After forcing a three-and-out on the El Toro initial drive, the Golden Hawks went 44 yards in four plays, Deleon going the final 30 on a delayed draw into the end zone with less than four minutes gone.
El Toro got on the board with a 43-yard Vince D’Amato field goal on the ensuing drive before El Dorado marched 65 yards in six plays, Deleon going the final 48 as part of a 99-yard, four-carry first quarter.
A 48-yard pass from Kane Wilson to Nolan Sheldon closed a first quarter where El Dorado put up 177 of its 356 total yards. It was more Deleon in the second quarter, scoring on a 4-yard run and a 1-yard run set up by a Ryan Cardenas interception.
El Dorado’s defense picked off passes from three Chargers quarterbacks. Anthony Laurenzi and Kevin O’Connell also had interceptions for the Golden Hawks defense.
After a scoreless third quarter, El Toro used a Jeff Dunlap interception to set up a 30-yard drive, capped by a 1-yard dive from Jai Morris early in the fourth quarter.
An onside kick on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by Cardenas and El Dorado was able to prevent any El Toro comeback.

Trabuco Hills 55, Wilson 6
By TOM CONNOLLY

Matt Wagner rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns to lead Trabuco Hills to a 55-6 victory over Wilson of Hacienda Heights on Friday in a CIF Southwest Division playoff game at Wilson High.
The Mustangs (11-1) have won 10 consecutive games and advances to the semifinals next week to play Charter Oak.
Weve been consistent on offense and stout on defense this season, said Mustangs coach Jason Negro, whose team has outscored its past four opponents, 182-23.
Leading 7-0 in the first quarter, Wagner capped a 91-yard scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. He added a 7-yard TD run in the second quarter, and Cory Brandt threw a 54-yard scoring pass to Adam Mooney to give the Mustangs a 28-0 lead at halftime. Mooney had four catches and two TDs.
Wagner added a scoring run in the second half and Kevin Halloran retuned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown.
Trabuco Hills linebacker Evan Pesonen had two sacks as the Mustangs forced five turnovers and held the Wildcats to 61 yards of offense in the first half.
Tim Gilmore led Wilson (6-6) with 124 yards rushing. Joshua Aussem scored the Mustangs first TD on a 14 yard run, following an interception by JB Torsy.
