USC Morning Buzz: What In The World Happened To John McKay’s Shoes?

MCKAY.FEET

So I’m innocently walking past the John McKay Center when I look down at the statue of John McKay. And I notice his shoes have the Nike swoosh logo on them. What?!?!?!

The picture below shows McKay wearing his Spot-bilt shoes. Even when tailback Anthony Davis famously wore Nikes at the 1974 USC-Notre Dame game, the rest of the team wore Spot-bilt and Adidas.

So how did the swoosh get on to that statue? It couldn’t be related to the fact Nike owner Phil Knight donated money to the McKay Center. Of course not. Maybe it was just a sculptor’s embellishment, like Syracuse experienced with its Ernie Davis statue. Whatever the reason, it’s not good. In fact, it’s a travesty. And they should be sanded immediately.

  1. Here’s an idea. You pay for the statue. Then you sand down the shoes. I’ll be McKay wouldn’t have liked you either.

    • McKay was pretty in-your-face, so my guess is he would have banned Scottie for life.

      • you are so wrong…McKay didn’t take himself too seriously like Kiff, Garrett, O’Hadden, Caesar, etc do.

he would have LOVED the wolfman!!

that’s why people actually LIKED McKay, whereas everyone but trOXans loathe the others.

        • McKay did enjoy some self-deprecating humor, but he also didn’t like putz who are too lazy to do their job. And he hated UCLA.

I find it just plain wrong that someone uses a faux account to say someone who is dead would love them. Weird.

          • It’s even weirder for Hilary/Helen to suppose someone who wouldn’t have spoken to you and you never met would act like the fool you are. Still waiting for the link to “Hilary/Helen whines and snivels constantly” blog.

          • Helen must be pushing 65 to have these first person accounts on a coach who left SC for the Bucs after the 1975 season..

      • Ladies and Gentleman SUCCster’s: Hilary/Helen scoops world journalism with pearls of unsubstantiated McKay information and unsolicited opinion from “Hilary/Helen’s whines and snivels constantly” blog. Instinnnkingcredible!

  2. A travesty?…..c’mon Scottie…. spare us the hyperbole……..and why don’t you simply pick up the phone and ask someone about this….like maybe the sculptor?

      • After re-reading his post, I can see how one could interpret it as a weak knee slapper…sarcasm doesn’t translate very well when put in writing…..

        • The post in typical Scooter fashion though is negative and has nothing to say about the greatest coach is USC FB history and one of the best ever in the game. The statue is a great addition to Heritage Hall and all that loser can say is that his shoes have a swoosh on them? Sculptors and artists for years have done this type of thing. Remember Scotter’s post on the bear at the acctng building (i think)? Never got an answer for that one. That reflects the quality of this thought, input and follow through… as in none….

          • “Yes, but besides THAT, how did you enjoy the play, Mrs. Lincoln?…..” ………A question that Scottie would likely have asked back in 1865 at Ford’s Theater….

          • Scooter is so confused I’m not sure he would know who Mary Todd is other than a person with a possibly confused orientation I suppose. Scotter also probably thinks that Captain 0 (HBO) freed the slaves too so he probably only views the Lincoln shooting as a result of gun violence that Captain 0 is still yet to fix only Captain Zero and Frank Sinatra are both the alpha and the omega in his world. I just can live without that erudite in my common ordinary bucolic life… hahahahahaha

    • This is the biggest scandal since the Bruin on the Accounting Building. Who goofed?

      • And let’s not forget about the Disneyland Main Street clock that’s apparently an eyesore on campus…..but it keeps good time, according to Scotty….

  3. wolfman, is there ANY detail, no matter how minute, how cryptic, that escapes the keen Eye of the Wolf???

wolfman, you are in Mid-Season form already, and it’s not even PRE-SEASON yet!!!

Insofar as the vaunted Southern Cal “tradition”, it’s all a sham as I’ve always asserted!

    • Yup…Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau is definitely on the job…BREAKING NEWS at it’s best……this is such newsworthy scoop….do you think that other news outlets will copy and paste THIS story?

  4. I miss the Spot-bilt shoes……Since they are a brand of Saucony, I am guessing that this was not simply a case of embellishment by the sculptor, but rather a heavy handed, selfish marketing move by Nike….let’s face it..anyone born in the 90’s (current USC students) probably wouldn’t even question it….

    • I gave this post a thumbs up because I believe it is spot on. Now I could not possibly care less about this but it makes me happy that there are those people out there that do.

I agree that all branding should be removed immediately.

  5. I woke up this morning and I had a sudden urge to eat lasagna. It was quite unusual.

  6. Not only the Nike swoosh, but it looks like his shoe is untied. Scotty, can you get on top of this entire dark episode? Travesty, indeed!

  7. The one tradition will always have is the envy of all the UCLA trolls on this board. Again thanks for your support can we get a towel wave an a 8 clap!

    • He was trying to see if he could look up McKay’s pant leg. That’s just the kind of guy he is, ya know…

    • Like in the matrix, does the spoon bend or does your perception bend the spoon? In this case does Scotty lie on the floor to look up Coach McKay’s leg or from the great outer beyond doe Coach McKay lift his leg to… well I’ll leave it you to figure what happens to Scotty next… hahahahhaha
Bucket is on patrol and his flag is deadly…

  8. Scott, is there any truth to the rumor that Kareem’s statute that he finally got at Staples Center has him wearing Kobe Hyperdunks?

  9. I figured out how we fix this. Fit Statue John McKay (“SJMcK”) with the re-released Adidas Key Trainers. It’s a good look and they are very comfortable.

  10. McKay played at Oregon, was an assistant under Len Casanova, and his close relationship with Bill Bowerman was part of the reason why Nike developed a shoe for football athletes playing on Astroturf.
