The La Habra and Cantwell Sacred Heart football teams are taking part in a few passing tournaments this week.
The Highlanders take the elevator to Division 1 when they travel to Mater Dei in a passing league today at 5 p.m.
Coach Frank Mazzotta said his team had a positive experience last year with the tournament and is back today. At that tournament, quarterback Cody Clements had a breakout effort in leading the Highlanders to a touchdown against the Monarchs No. 1 defense. It will be interesting to see who comes out looking good today.
The Highlanders also host their own passing league on Thursday.
As for Cantwell, the Cardinals have a passing league every Wednesday for the next few weeks.
Cantwell will host Gardena, Lincoln, Compton and Nogales this Wednesday with action beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals are a good young team and it will be interesting to see the growth of players like quarterback Christian Espinoza, dynamo junior wide receiver Adam Aguirre and fullback/linebacker James Becerra.
If anyone else has any immediate passing leagues going on (meaning this week), please feel free to list them here. Thanks.
***UPDATE*** I forget to mention that Whittier Christian was also in a passing tournament today at Division 1 JSerra of San Juan Capistrano at 4 p.m. This may be a huge year for Whittier Christian, which will likely depend more offensively on quarterback Stephen Anderson since all-world running back Garrett Fulbright has since moved on to Grand View University. Anderson’s health will be a concern this season.
