CIF Playoffs: Division 11 (Mid-Valley Division)

It was already known that Olympic League champion Whittier Christian (9-1) and Almont League co-champion Schurr (6-4) were the two locals playoff bound in the Division 11 playoffs. Here is the just released divisional bracket.

Whittier Christian opens with a home game against Almont League co-champion Bell Gardens (7-3), who was given a co-league championship gift with Schurr’s defeat last Friday.

A Heralds wins give them a likely second-round showdown versus Valle Vista League champion Covina (9-1) in the second round.

Despite a disappointing season-ending loss to San Gabriel, Schurr enters the first round as the favorite and host to Valle Vista League No. 2 Baldwin Park (5-5). A Spartans victory gives them arguably the second round’s biggest challenge, in likely facing No. 2 Monrovia (8-2).

My Analysis: I was a little surprised Whittier Christian didn’t get a top 4 bid. After all, the Heralds won the toughest league in the division. Plus, their only loss was to Division 10 Cantwell Sacred Heart. I guess the playoff committee was not impressed with the Heralds’ nonleague schedule.

As for Schurr, the Spartans were their own worst enemy in losing to San Gabriel. While I expect the Spartans to defeat the Braves in the first round, they’re going to have an uphill climb against the Wildcats.
