Reading between the lines, expect to see a lot of Alex Guerrero in left field.

SAN DIEGO — Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said prior to Sunday’s game against the Padres that the team might recall an outfielder from the minors with Yasiel Puig going on the 15-day disabled list.

Reading between the lines, however, it now seems likely that Alex Guerrero will move into a hybrid left field/third baseman role in Puig’s absence.

Calling up an outfielder, Mattingly said Sunday morning, “is another thing we’re talking about. It kind of depends on what happens today as far as usage. Do we need that extra guy another day to get right the ship, to get our bullpen in order rest-wise, or do we go with a different mix again?”

Because starter Scott Baker pitched seven innings, the Dodgers needed only one inning out of their bullpen Sunday. Carlos Frias pitched a scoreless eighth.

With Joel Peralta on the disabled list, the Dodgers’ relievers — all eight of ’em — enter the three-game series against the Giants fairly rested.

After the game, here’s what Mattingly said about Guerrero’s chances of playing left field: “There’s a good chance you’re going to see him out there. Obviously with Yasiel down it changes something.”

The Dodgers will face a left-handed pitcher at least once in the series against the Giants when Madison Bumgarner starts Tuesday. Mattingly said he would rest right fielder Andre Ethier, a left-handed hitter, against Bumgarner.

So, expect Scott Van Slyke and Guerrero to man the corner outfield positions when Bumgarner — and likely other lefties — take the hill.

Guerrero hit his fifth home run of the season Sunday in just his fourth start of the season. All four starts have come at third base. He is batting .500 through his first 11 games of 2015.
