More on Gauthier

| | Comments (13) |

Denis Gauthier has one year remaining on his contract, with a salary-cap hit of $2.1 million. Gauthier will turn 32 in October and is listed at 6-foot-3, 224 pounds. He spent all of last season in the AHL and totaled three goals and 15 assists in 78 games. The Flyers placed him on waivers last season and, after he cleared, they sent him down to the AHL to clear salary-cap space.

Kings fans might remember Gauthier from his incident with Jeremy Roenick and Sean Avery in 2005. Gauthier's hit, in a preseason game, gave Roenick a concussion. Avery responded by saying, ``I think it was a clean hit. I think it was typical of most French guys in our league with a visor on, running around and playing tough and not back anything up."

So if we miss out on Brad Stuart.
We can't miss with this guy.

first off ... shut up anthony.

This is a good move. You get a big Dman for a year at a relatively low price ($2.1mil) and a 2010 -2nd round pick. This is an insurance policy in case one of the rookie Ds is not ready for the bigs. Look at this like a Klemm pick - a guy who can play both for the Kings and Manchester (if needed) with some NHL experience to bring along the kids as well. There is no way DL gives Stuart 4 years and any more than the $3.5mil per. The 2nd round pick is a good one too.

It does look like DL did this mostly for the 2nd round pick....

Rich - Why take on the 2.1mil cap hit when DL was trying to free up cap space?

Um...he didn't crack the Philly lineup so you put a guy in line to battle for the big club that's already making 2 million bucks.

Nice.

Gauthier is not good. This is just a salary cap move by DL. He needs to hit the floor and this is an easy 2 mil 2 drop next year. He is gonna be a "veteran " presence in Manchester and an emergency call up. We got the 2nd rounder simply because the Flyers needed to clear cap space. This is NOT the UFA D that DL will acquire

Gauthier would have been a known factor for both Lombardi and Hextall from their Philly days. They wouldn't have pulled the trigger on this minor deal if they didn't think Gauthier was a serviceable d-man, despite his time in AHL. And his contract is reasonable at $2 mil and only 1 year. Yeah, that 2nd round pick might turn out to be important too. They sent over prospects who weren't in the Kings plans.

We now have 4 spots for D next season (JMFJ, Pressing, Gauthier, Greene). They re-sign Blake, that makes 5. Leaving 2 open spots for a kid out of camp to impress like Doughty, Teubert or Hickey. Unless they have 1 more D-man they're targeting for depth today or tomorrow. Time will tell.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that Avery runs around like a tough guy and then turtles and never backs anything up.

Apples and Oranges.

Listen to txkingsfan.

Gauthier replaces Klemm, not Stuart.

Yes, this helps the Kings get closer to that $40 million floor. It also adds more toughness. Funny how both Crawford and DL tried to shoot down claims the Kings weren't a physical team. Then DL goes out and gets Teubert, Greene, Gauthier. Hope Avery signs with the Ducks now.

Great move...we got a 32 yr old AHL'r...Here comes the cup.

Crash Davis & Goon Squad....That makes better sense...thx!

PRMan, I completely agree with you. Avery does have some underrated offensive skill, but when it comes to toughness, he's mostly talk.

Great move. DL gets a 2nd round pick (too bad it wasn't 2009) in 2010, for two players that won't ever see the light of day in the NHL, and a servicable D-man who helps us reach the salary floor....
