Day 1 State Wrestling update for San Bernardino County

San Bernardino County brought 17 wrestlers to the CIF State Championships.

Here’s a look at how they did:

Advancing to the semifinals:
No. 1 Corey Griego, Sultana (170) went 3-0 with one win in overtime and held on for another by one point at the end.  Both opponents were ranked in the top 10. Will face No. 8 Bryce Martin of Bakersfield in the semifinals.
No. 2 Derrick Jones, Bloomington (220) went 4-0 with one 8-0 decision and three pins. Will face No. 3 Jordan Sepeda of Natomas in the semifinals.

Still alive: but needing to win their first match Saturday to clinch a top eight spot:

No. 6 Jon Solano, Los Osos (170). He won his first two, lost to the No. 5 wrestler, then won twice more in consolation. He faces No. 4 Bryan Salinas of Covina Northview in the first round of consolation. Salinas beat Solano 5-3 in CIF-SS Masters semifinals last week.

No 13 Garrick Gurney, Chino Hills (170). He won his first match, lost 6-4, then won twice in consolation. He will face No. 11 Harlan Kistler of Riverside King the CIF-SS Masters runner-up, in the next round of consolation.

No. 7 Matt Williams, Sultana (182). Won his first, lost his second to No. 3-ranked wrestler, then won three times in consolation. He faces No. 5 Ian Baker of La Costa Canyon in his next match.
