No on districts

There are two letters today that appeared in the Tribune about the proposed districts. Both letters oppose the idea. Here’s the start of one letter:

As a homeowner in West Covina since 1954, I have seen my share of loony, boneheaded schemes presented to the city and its residents over the years for their approval. Remember the giant aviary at the old BKK site, or the “performing arts center” where Target now sits, or the gambling casino atop the Class III landfill or the double decking of the Azusa Avenue/Amar Road intersection? Or, how about the high rise Hyatt or Marriott at The Lakes?

One point made by one of the letter writers is that the information distributed by those seeking signatures on the petition is misleading. We’ve heard this claim before. But who do you believe? West Covina city politics are so divided, and each side has so much disdain for their “opponent” that its been difficult to cut through the rhetoric.

I don’t listen to all the rhetoric as was stated, but I listen to my neighbors and friends. I believe as residents who are approached by this group of petitioners, that we are being fed a lot of untruths. These folks are telling us this is good for the community and council folks don’t care about us basically. Well I don’t believe that’s true. I feel we are better represented by 5 than 1. We have choices now and if districting goes through we will have only 1 choice. Also there is a huge cost for us hard working taxpayers that live in west covina. This districting group wants to put more of a burden on us with paying more to put this up to a vote so someone who couldn’t get elected by the voters of west covina can get a seat. Well we can see through this sham and I personally would rather keep the services we have in our city instead of wasting our hard earned money to pay for this districting plan. I choose to vote for 5 representatives not 1.

First, a quick survey of cities across america will show that districts are rarely a good idea-especially when the city is of a relatively small to medium size.

Second, my experience with the southside hernandez-philes is that they regularly “put extras” on any issue. Meaning that they will stretch any issue into the devil’s work, even when the facts don’t support their allegations.

That is not to say that this council majority is without its failings. I see the occasional questionable decision, and sometimes the council seems a little cozy with their vendors. But, that doesn’t mean that something insideous is going on.

Sykes and crew attempt to make a federal case out of every single issue, and in my mind, that undermines their credibility to the point that I treat everything they say as suspect first, and then look to see if they can prove it (which they rarely if ever do)

Same with hernandez. I’m suspicious of everything he does and says because over the years his exaggerations, falsehoods, misleading statements, and baseless allegations have undermined his credibility in my mind to the point that I assume he’s full of it until proven otherwise.

Is that fair? Probably not, but it is the environment that they have created.

I signed that petition. Now I am going to request that my name be removed. I am going straight to City Hall on Monday to have my name removed because Sykes and Hernandez have lying to us about the plan.

I asked them point blank if this will cost the taxpayers anything. They said no. After research, several calls to the WC staff, and asking an attorney, the answer is YES! It will cost us a lot of money.

I urge all those that signed to have their name removed!

The topic of discussion lately in West Covina has been the issue of districts. I do feel it’s proper to discuss issues to have a better understanding of the topic. I have been talking with many people and they feel separate districts is not what is best for West Covina. They fear it will not only create division but lack of representation and take away their choices.

The issues of districts should be based on what is best for the entire city of West Covina not based on “differing sides” or where you live.

Clearly there are those who agree with each other and seem to have similar ideas of what direction the community should go. Saying that, it is also clear there are individuals who want to start fights. If you attend meetings and hear the personal attacks made by some individuals you can see the intent to cause problems.

Differing opinions are one thing, but false personal attacks and stating how I feel is quite another. I have been accused of not caring for the entire city. Not only is that accusation wrong, but not verifiable. Additionally, I am the only one who can state how I feel.

If I say nothing, would those accusations appear believable? If I respond, am I a part of the fighting?

It’s a tough spot to be in and I don’t want to fight. By stating my position against districting I am doing what I feel is best for West Covina and that is what I was elected to do.

  • WC23

Well Sanderson, no one said that politcs was nice. If you can’t cut it, get out of the game. What you call “false personal attacks” only are made becuase of things you’ve done in the past or things that you’ve said in the past. The company you keep speaks volumes about what people preceive you to be.

But don’t cry when people say “bad things” about you. Its all part of sitting on the dias. Play big or go home.

  • WC Voter

WC23, you are correct. It’s not nice because of statments just as you have made and people like you.

I read the council person’s thoughts and I didn’t see where she is saying she can’t handle it. I read it that she doesn’t want to argue and fight to have a thought on this district stuff.

I actually thank her for having the concern to speak up in the first place.

  • WC Citizen of Southside

Here we go again, taking the focus off the issue. I watch these council meetings and it still amazes me how a small group of people attack! WC23 you must be one of them. This council has had to put up with more bologna it’s ridiculous. Those so call “bad things” my friend are attacks and lies, I know, I’ve seen it. This coucnil has done more good things for our end of town than any other council and for you to say they have done bad things to be attacked for is just another lie. The attacks are what is destroying WC not the good people who represent us.
