Rio Hondo trustee to run for El Monte mayor

You’ll probably all be seeing a lot more of these kinds of posts with election season for local cities drawing close:

Rio Hondo College trustee Andre Quintero has announced he will not seek another four-year term this fall to the five-person governing board.

Instead, Quintero says, he will run for mayor of El Monte.

Here is a quote from a February 13, 2009 article from the Rio Hondo College newspaper on the subject of accreditation:

“There are a total of six recommendations that the college has to address, 1) Institutional Effectiveness, 2) Student Learning Outcomes, 3) Student Support Services, 4) Human Resources, 5) Leadership, and 6) Governance. The ACCJC especially recommended focusing on recommendations one and six.”

    http://media.www.elpaisanonewspaper.com/media/storage/paper1088/news/2009/02/13/News/Accjc.Gives.Rio.Hondo.Warning-3646178.shtml

See the last item on the list: “Governance”. The College accreditation board says poor governance has contributed to putting Rio Hondo College’s accreditation in jeopardy.

I hope Slicky Andy won’t do for El Monte what his “leadership” has done for Rio Hondo College.

  • Anonymous Too

I can’t stand Ernie, but I would rather have him for mayor than that creepy Andre Q. Ernie won’t forget that the cops turned their backs on him and I think he will turn his back on them. Ernie might embarrass the citizens of El Monte, but Andre will either try and put dissenters in jail or sue them. Ask Tom Biodrowski or Dave Siegrest. They both have had Andre go after them.

  • anonymous 3

Ernie was not only embarrassing el monte but STEALING from it, in addition to the numerous unethical and illegal activities he has DONE. Andre is not the greatest, but he is definitely better than Ernie or any current council member who have made themselves and their friends, family members, and donors VERY RICH at the expense of residents/taxpayers. They are reason why the city is broke! They have kept their stupid and lazy friends on payroll to destroy the city.

As for Tom Biodrowski , he has also $$$ benefit from this council.

  • Resident

What did Ernie steal? What other unethical and illegal activities has he done? What council members have gotten rich or made their families rich? How did they do it? What $$$ benefit did Tom Biodrowski get from this council? I have real problems with people that act like they know something, but don’t.

We do know that Quintero promised to bring Rio Hondo off campus classes to the city, but failed. We do know that under Qunitero’s reign Rio Hondo is in danger of losing their accreditation. We do know that Quintero’s campaign is backed by the El Monte POA. We also know that the POA and fire dept unions are too involved in the city politics and business. We don’t need more elected officials in the city that owe favors to any of the employee unions. We have been paying our officers more than we can afford, and that is a big reason why we are in this current financial mess. Quintero, Macias, and Thomas are all police puppets. Don’t vote for any of them.

  • El Monte Homeowner

I will not vote for any candidate that is supported by the El Monte Police or Los Angeles County Fire Dept. I will not vote for any employee who is a former city employee. We don’t need people elected who serve the employees and not the residents of the city.

    Hi All,

My name is Kien Lam and I am one of the candidate running for Council. I am just as frustrated as all of you by what has been going on in the city of El Monte. This is the reason why I chose to run. I understand the mistrust some may have. Let me reassure everyone that I am probably the only candidate in this election with private sector work experiences. I have no political tie to any city or union. All I want to do is the right thing for this city and I ask for your support.

    Sincerely,
    Kien Lam

  • Resident

Good luck. I look forward to hearing what you have to say at the candidate forums. I wish you were running for mayor. Right now, I’m voting for the lesser of two evils for that office. The current mayor is an embarrassment, but Andre Quintero has done damage to Rio Hondo College, and I fear worse could happen in El Monte.

By the way…didn’t Andre come out and support the mayor during public comments at a city council meeting, after the May 5th Sister city fiasco? Was that before or after he spoke in favor of destroying a natural habitat near Whittier Narrows, so that a building and parking lots could be built to study the animals that were driven out of the area.

  • concerned

I think some of the mail against Andre is from David Siegrist…he is very angry that Quintero beat him in the Rio Hondo race…so take what he says as an opponent….as far as Quintero he is just a puppet of the POA whatever Proposition comes out to give the police more money, they hire this (does he live here..and where? at his mommy’s house)him to run the campaign…as far as Wayne Clayton goes, I think it is time he looked after his own home.

  • David Siegrist

ALL MY COMMENTS CARRY MY NAME (DAVID SIEGRIST).

I AM RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION TO RIO HONDO C.C. BECAUSE IN THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, ALL THE WORK WE AS A BOARD DID WAS METHODICALLY DISMANTLED BY OUR PRESENT
BOARD MEMBER (MR. QUINTERO), WHO HAS DECIDED TO DESERT
RIO HONDO AND SEEK TO BECOME MAYOR OF EL MONTE.

HIS DESERTION “under fire” shows quite clearly who and what he is.

Quintero hangs around veterans, yet, never ever
served in the U.S. military, nor, to my knowledge, has anyone else in his family.

I did attend a Boys’ State gathering, where
Andre (with tears in his eyes), urged young high school
boys to “follow the example of Pat Tillman” and join the military.

Well, since Quintero is so willing to have others
march off to war (as I voluntarily did and so many others did), I urge him to JOIN UP TODAY AND
    FIGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY.

  • David Siegrist

    Concerned,

My writings bear my name in all instances.

My concern about Rio Hondo’s lack of service to
El Monte will continue so long as we in El Monte
contiinue to get the shaft and are placed in
    the “back of the bus.”

A trustee is “trusted” to represent and protect the
interests of the residents in the area.

Failure to do so is dishonorable and disgraceful.

    David Siegrist
Candidate for *RE-ELECTION to Rio Hondo C.C. for
    Trustee Area #1 (El Monte)

My right to use *RE-ELECTION was approved in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, as well as the other 17 items that my then opponent challenged.

Having to recreate 35 years of my life was an ordeal–it cost my opponent (or his dad) $4,176.

What a waste of time that was!

The most insulting charge was leveled against my
    military service.

If you want to see the whole thing, it’s on record
    with the courts.

The judge said this this was the “most asinine case she had ever seen in her 25 years on the bench.

  • Residente

I wonder if Slick Andy will agree to Join the National Guard or Reserves….I’m sure he’s still eligible.

Let’s see him serve his country.

I still hope Marian Powers will enter the race as a write-in candidate for Mayor and actuall give us a real choice for Mayor.

  • anonymous

I wonder if we will get the best of service from David, I don’t know if he has time? Will he be bringing his grandchildren to the board meetings…he brings them to meetings now where only adults should really be at and everyone has to put up with the children…

  • Anonymous

Really? Only Adults should be at Council meetings.

First, a requirement for adults only would probably disqualify most politicans and would-be candidates whose demeanors are often very petulant and childish.

Second, does that include the kids who come to every meeting to do the Flag Salute. Will you be the one Mr. Grinch to tell them they don’t belong.

  • Truth Squad

    Dear Tania and Residents

Every election year El Monte residents have the misfortune of having their answering machines and mail boxesfilled with nasty political robo-calls and campaign mailers funded by all variety of special interest groups.

I’d like to make a request of you and the public in the hopes of holding candidates and their well-heeled backers accountable for the claims they make.

Can residents forward all robocalls and recordings to the Tribune so that the claims made in those materials can be “facted-checked” (and by fact check I mean whether the statements are true or not).

I would also like you to investigate the groups and persons (e.g. special interest groups, campaign strategists and consultants) who are behind these materials.

I think this will have a very salutary effect on the political process and may cause some people to choose their words carefully when they decide to attack someone.

The rumor around town is that because this year is expected to have a low voter turn-out, the focus will be on high-propensity voters like the elderly. Usually what this means is a lot of robocalls and mailers to Grandpa and Grandma telling them that that they will be KILLED OR MEET SOME HORRIBLE END if they vote for or against one candidate or antoher.

I trust that this paper will do it’s best to deflate this kind of senseless hysteria from the campaign.

    TANIA….It’s up to you.

  • Dig Deep Trib

    Hey Tania….
While you are at it, how about taking a look at Jeff Seymour and the El Monte Elementary School district. Last November the district was crying for another school bond. Now it appears that they are busy building new classrooms at some schools, but closing down other schools. In fact, one of the schools they are closing, is where they built a new parking lot and put in new fences with the last desperately needed school bond.

  • Observed

From the September 8, 2009 edition of the Tribune –

“At Rio Hondo College in Whittier, the start of classes brought mixed feelings for Board of Trustees President Andre Quintero.

‘I’m so happy that we’re seeing a record number of students coming to Rio Hondo because people are seeking out an education,” Quintero said. “But at the same time, the state is cutting back on the resources necessary to provide students with an education.’”

SO LET’S GET THIS STRAIGHT. THE FAILURE OF RIO HOND TO OFFER COURSE IS THE “STATE’S FAULT” ACCORDING TO SLICK ANDY…..NOT A FAILURE OF LEADERSHIP.

  • I’ve been polled

    Hey Tribune…
Who is hiring “Cal Western Polls” to call El Monte citizens? According to the pollster, the city council voted to lay off 35 police officers. Where did that garbage come from? 17 officers got pink slips and I heard a good many of them are back working for El Monte.

By the way…17 officers were let go because Brian Glick refused to take a pay cut.

Don’t let the POA buy another election. They will back candidates because they expect to get something in return.

This year please send all of this stuff to the Tribune so that it can be facted checked.

I mean really fact check the assertions being made. If you see yourself as a guardian of the public interest that is exactly what you’ll do.

Also, I think you and this paper owe it to the public to mention when information you use comes from a special interest group PRESS RELEASE. I thin you especially owe it to the public to challenge the statements made in those releases rather than simply accepting everything they say as fact.

  • Cal Who?

    WHO IS CAL WESTERN POLLS

There is a website for one David Steinberg who was apparently the Director of Research for a company named Cal Western Poll in the late 80s and early 90s.

The firm apparently specializes in “research, marketing, and strategy planning for political candidates, elected officials, and both corporate and legal clients.” According to the resume the firm also
“analyzed market results for political races, consumer product tests, and jury selection research” and “created customized marketing strategies for major clients.”
    website – http://www.linkedin.com/pub/david-steinberg/0/60/251

There is also a 1998 “letter to the editor” from a person in Downey who claims to have been called by a company by the same name. Here is what he said:
    Survey doubts
    To the Editor:
I must warn whomever commissioned a telephone survey conducted by California Western Poll on Sunday, April 19: DON’T PUT TOO MUCH CONFIDENCE IN THE “RESULTS”. The survey questions were long run-on sentences that seemed constructed to confuse the respondent. I had to ask more than one time to have the questions reread . . . and I don’t consider myself stupid.
Several of the survey questions were preceded by “what if” conditions that seemed designed to lead to only one reasonable response. That’s not a survey. A legitimate survey is not manipulative, and this one clearly was. My instinct tells me that it was an exercise intended to put words in my mouth in support of some future political advertising and that offends me.

Wow.. I can’t believe these posts.. or actually, I can. Sour grapes from David Siegrist who lost to Andre Quintero on Rio Hondo School Board years ago. What else is new? We get this every election from Siegrist.

I remember when Siegrist got beat and tried again using “re-elect Siegrist” trying to claim he was the incumbent while bashing Quintero who was the incumbent!

I am a life long resident of El Monte. I met Andre years ago when he was running for Rio Hondo School Board. He is exactly what El Monte needs in a Mayor! He is young, caring, charismatic, a lawyer who values education and the justice system. He’s got my vote! GO ANDRE!

Siegrist.. stop your sour grapes about Andre Quintero!
We hear it every election from you. He took your seat on Rio Hondo Board years ago and we hear the same smearing about him every election. Enough!

When Andre Quintero joined the board of trustees, Rio Hondo provided off-campus classes here in El Monte. Now the only off campus class is provided by Pasadena City College.

Andre Quintero ran the Measure P campaign for the police department. The measure failed, and he had a senior citizen arrested for stealing a campaign sign.

Andre want to use El Monte city council as a stepping stone to move on in politics. He is nothing more than a puppet for the El Monte POA. I find it interesting that everytime I see Andre’s name on a ballot, he has a different employer. Andre, do you have a difficult time keeping a job?

In response to the “anonymous” comments above..

What’s with the “WRITE IN CANDIDATE” garbage? If you can’t get your papers together on time to file as a legitimate candidate, why in the world would you expect people to think you are responsible enough to run for office?

And NO, I am NOT a member of the El Monte Professional Latinos. I am as Caucasian as wonder bread. Born and raised in El Monte (40 years).

What’s wrong with a political office being “stepping stone” for higher office? If Andre can prove to be a good Mayor people will have confidence in voting him for higher office IF he chooses to run for higher office in the future.

Wow.. are you suggesting that Andre lives in the Inland Empire? You are really grasping..

I don’t see Andre supporters candidate-bashing all over the internet.

  • Veronica

Too bad the Salcedo brothers are not running for El Monte City Council instead of School board. Now THAT would be GREAT..
Andre Quintero as Mayor, Bobby and Carlos Salcedo as City Council members.
    Maybe next time around? =)

The Salcedo Brothers and Quintero as a Mayor and do you know who will be telling them what to do, your guess is correct ( Weldon or Clayton ) and now you know why the City is broke and if they decide to ran for a higher office, can they take these 2 guys with them to guide them? I do not think so…

Dear “Anonymous,” and all others who hide behind a pseudonym,

    Why do I use “Re-elect?”
Because, in the asinine lawsuit Mr. Quintero filed against me, the judge ruled “It is entirely proper and
legal to use the word “re-elect.” It means to be elected again. It does not mean I am the incumbent–unless the reader is ignorant.

Mr. Quintero claimed the $4,000 he had to pay in attorney’s fees was “well worth it to have the Siegrists running around like crazy people.”

Mr. Quintero, a non-veteran and one who has no military veterans in his family, had the nerve to even question my six years of honorable military service.
I volunteered for the Vietnam War and served my country well in the US Navy.

Mr. Quintero, to date, has not entered the military.
Why not? He frequently urges young men and women to “do their duty and serve their country…and even tells them the story of Pat Tillman–a hero who was killed by his own men.” Not an inspiration, except to Mr. Quintero and his like.

In the past eight years, Mr. Quintero has overseen the
demise of services to El Monte from Rio Hondo College.

Presently, the college is faced with a loss of accreditation. Go to riohondo.edu and read the Accreditation Report: It heartily urges the board to be trained in trusteeship and immediately institute of “code of ethics.”

Check at http://www.riohondo.edu; look at the Fall Schedule of off-campus credit classes. You will find none in Mr. Quintero’s Trustee Area #1. Rio Vista School doesn’t count–it’s in PCC’s area.

Also, PCC now teaches Poli.Sci 1 at Arroyo.

This is well within Mr. Quintero’s area.

No, I do not submit to the worthless, baseless charge of “sour grapes.”

I honestly care about El Monte and am working to bring back all we had before Mr. Quintero decided to ruin it all.

We once had a Rio Hondo Training Center here (from 1996 to 2003.) Mr. Quintero sat on his haunches as Rio announced, “temporarily closure of our center.”
    It’s been closed since 2003.

Also, all the off-campus, credit and non-credit classes in Mr. Quintero’s area have disappeared as of

  • In Need of Respect

Rio Hondo College Board President Quintero is accused of violating the Brown Act. After a closed-session Board meeting, officials are required to report significant actions taken to the audience. Instead of doing this publicly, Quintero huddled around the microphone and reported that the college would be laying off a half-dozen members of the staff, some who have been at the college for over a decade. This was only discovered after someone reviewed the recording of the proceedings. Do we need such a coward as our mayor?

By the way, the firings may lead to significant liability on the part of the college as many of the people being let go had filed grievances for various types of administrative misconduct. This opens the college to charges of retaliation and potential lawsuits. Enjoy Quintero as your mayer; we are sure glad to see him go!

  • Irony

    To the Previous Poster:

If what you say is true, that would be incredably ironic since Mr. Quintero is a municipal law attorney for the City of Los Angeles.

If a municipal law attorney knows anything, I was once told, he should at the very least know the Brown Act.

If this is true (and we would probably need to know more before jumping to conclusions), so much for being an “educated professional”

  • HEY TRIBUNE!

Hey Tribune….are you reading this? Wouldn’t a little investigation into what “In Need of Respect” wrote make a good news story. I’m sure that both Tribune and Whittier Daily News subscribers would be interested.

  • E.R. Murrow

Unfortuntely alot of the reporters for this paper only seem to write what gets SPOON FED to them in the form of press releases.

Their idea of reporting is simply to quote someone elses propaganda and allow the propaganda to masquarade as “objective news reporting.”

No attempt to question or challenge the claims that are made.

Bookending one bald assertion by one group with another equally bald assertion from another group is not “balanced reporting”….that’s lazy reporting.

“Balancing” two statements (one true and one false) without analyzing the truth or content of the statements is poor journalism. A false statement is a false statement and should be treated on an equal plane with a true statement….We’d know that if we had reporters who’d bother to sift fact from fiction.

Balancing two equally false statements is even worse.

  • Veronica

I do deny being a member of the El Monte Professional Latinos because I am NOT a member. I am caucasian as I’ve said. Born and raised in El Monte (40 years) to parents who immigrated from Yugoslavia.

These posts I’m reading here and elsewhere about the Salcedo brothers, Quintero and others running for office being members of the El Monte Professional Latinos.. is that supposed to be a “Gotcha!” moment? Like some sort of revelation that is going to cause everyone to gasp and re-think their votes? Seriously, using that against them makes the author(s) look very Latino-phobic, and that just doesn’t sit right in a city that is predominately Latino. If people have a problem with candidates who are part of a club of Latino professionals, then I suggest maybe moving to neighboring Arcadia.. ? San Marino.. ?

As for the person promoting a “write in” candidate, please answer..
If you can’t get your papers in on time and pay the fee to be a legitimate candidate why would you expect people to believe that you are serious and responsible enough be Mayor?

  • Anonymous

    Veronica:

    1. Of the 56 comments (now 57) only two, apparently posted by the same person, make any issue about the Latino Professional group. So for you to dismiss the 50 plus other comments on the basis of 2 is rhetorically dishonest on your part. One might even say that you are engaging in “reverse-baiting”.

    2. Membership in the group hardly matter to me and I’m sure it really doesn’t matter to many others who are troubled by the idea of Quintero becoming Mayor.

HERES WHAT WE DO HAVE A PROBELM WITH.

    1. What he’s done (and not done) for the college and how that translates into what he would do as Mayor.

    2. His apparently cozy ties with the police union

    3. His involvement in the arrest of a former Planning Commisioner, a case in which charges were later dropped.

The are all questions we have and have a right to have.

ARE EL MONTE CANDIDATES FOR OFFICE ALLOWED TO USE THE CITY COUNCIL CHAMBERS AS A BACKDROP FOR CAMPAIGN PICTURES?

Certain candidates were doing just that today at city hall getting pictures taken in the City Council Chambers with the City seal in the backgrund.

    Tania: Is that legal?

  • anonymous

If that person is being supported by a certain group and you know which one iam refering to, then it is legal and check and see if Weldon is running their campaign, that will also make a difference…Remember Weldon’s pension $ 200,000.00 a year thanks tho his City Council friends and he needs to keep busy during Elections…( Pay back time)

To the couple of people with various screen names who have turned this into an Andre-bashing forum:

Where are you bitter lemons going to hang out on election night when Andre wins the Mayor seat? Can I come film? lol =D

  • Veronica

Speaking of pensions, that Richard Thomas guy running for treasurer is sure getting a hefty one from what I’ve read. He does not seem trustworthy or genuine to me. I wonder what his agenda is. I remember reading a letter in the Tribune MONTHS ago from him attacking Velasco. Apparently he was starting his campaign attack extremely early and his campaign seems to be based primarily on attacks against Velasco instead of trying to focus on why he thinks he is qualified.

I do not like the Wallach clique, but I do like Velasco and hope he retains the Treasurer seat. I think with what he has had to work with he’s done a great job.

    My personal picks..

    Quintero for Mayor
That Lam guy for City Council because he seems genuine and likeable
    Velasco for Treasurer
Salcedo brothers and Tess Velasco for school board.

  • Anonymous

It does not make a bit of difference if Quintero or Gutierrez win the Mayor’s Seat, they both carry the 3 PPP’s Proffesional Police Puppets and now is even worse if Norma Macias or Richard Gardner win, it will be an even exchange a puppet in and a puppet out and the main puppet will stay “Emily”…Do you think this poor and broke City has any hopes of Recovering?

  • Veronica

I want DEMOCRATS in the city council seats voting on behalf of us citizens in El Monte. Emily Ishigaki and Juventino Gomez are REPUBLICANS. I am fairly certain that Norma Macias is a Democrat. Given that I am a fan of the Salcedo brothers and Andre Quintero and I believe they are backing her, she’s got my vote.

I hate to get into party lines here, but when it comes to elected officials voting on my behalf I prefer that they share my political party.. especially after the mess our country is in thanks to Bush and the Republicans.

I do think that El Monte has hopes of recovering. Give Andre a chance. He grew up in the City. He does seem to care about the community and bringing about changes to get our city back on track. Ernie, on the other hand, seems to care about the community when it’s election time (just my opinion). Andre is people-friendly and approachable. Given his experience on the college board and his age, I think he can relate to the youth better than Ernie can and I think that’s important.

The Tribune did a nice write up endorsement about Carlos Salcedo for school board a couple of days ago calling Carlos a dynamic teacher who motivates students. I think Andre is similar.

  • Resident

Quintero represented El Monte on the Rio Hondo Board of Trustees. Quintero says he met all his goals as a member of the Rio Hondo board of Trustees. Before he became a member of the board, El Monte had off campus classes held in our city. Since Quintero, the only class being held in El Monte is brought to us by PCC. Now Rio Hondo is in danger of losing their accreditation. Were these Quintero’s goals?

I am concerned with electing candidates who are backed by the POA, Fire Dept. Union, and city employees S.E.I.U. If they are backing a candidate, they do so expecting something in return. That is what got this city into the financial trouble it is in.
Quintero, Macias, and Thomas all have the backing of the POA and Unions. Thomas is a retired El Monte police officer and is collecting a pension of over $100,000 a year.

When the cops and the other unions start to put out their “hit” pieces on the candidates that they can’t keep in their pockets, make sure those are the folks that get your vote.

  • FACT CHECK

WHEN IT COMES TO LOCAL POLITICS

DEMOCRATS = REPUBLICANS = POLICE UNION PUPPETS.

People don’t let Slick Andy try to sway you with appeals to being “Latino” or to being a “Democrat.” At the local level is doesn’t mean squat.

Emily is a Republican but was backed heavily by the POLICE UNION. Slick Andy, a nominal Dem, is also backed by the POLICE UNION. Ernie a Democrat was backed by the POLICE UNION as was J. Gomez a Republican. Henry Velasco (not backed by the Police Union) is a Republican..but according to Veronica’s last post that won’t stop her from voting for Velasco.

    SEE FOLKS….IT’S DOESN’T MATTER.

WHEN YOU GET RIGHT DOWN TO IT, A VOTE FOR SLICK ANDY, NORMA OR DICK THOMAS….IS A VOTE FOR THE POLICE UNION….NOT THE DEMOCRATS.

AND IF YOU REALLY WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT, REALIZE THAT MOST COPS AND FIREMAN IN THEIR PERSONAL LIVES ARE R-E-P-U-B-L-I-C-A-N’s.

OF COURSE THAT DOESN’T STOP THEM FROM APPEALING TO DEMOCRATS TO HAVE THEIR SALARIES INCREASED AT TAXPAYER EXPENSE.

  • ABD

I don’t know anything about the El Monte candidates, and pretty much all I know about Siegrist is what he posted on this website. But I have two problems with what he’s posted:

    1. “ABD” is not a degree. It stands for “all but dissertation,” but it’s just academic shorthand for someone who needs to finish their dissertation. You’d only put it only resume if you’re applying for a job that requires a Ph.D. and you’re nearing completion on that degree. If you have no intention of finishing the degree, it doesn’t make any sense to use it, unless you’re trying to confuse people into thinking “ABD” is somehow synonymous with “Ph.D.” or “Ed.D.”

    2. In the normal usages of the term, “re-elect” implies you’re the incumbent. If Jerry Brown were to start running commercials in 2009 saying, “Re-elect Governor Brown,” people would laugh him out of town. The same would apply to David Siegrist.

POMONA- I coordinated the 2006 campaign that unseated three long term, anti-1014 incumbent candidates and replaced them with “pro-fire” council members. This protected LF181 and Battalion 15 Staffing. Dear “Taxpayer” and “Veronica,”

Your bias shows by failing to address issues and by declining to engage in true debate.

    Veronica,

Please visit the Los Angeles County Superior Court records and view “Quintero v. Siegrist.” You’ll find that Mr. Quintero challenged 18 (eighteen) items on my ballot statement. He (A NON MILITARY VETERAN) even had the audacity to challenge my service record, as well as my teaching background. Well, Mr. Quintero lost the case and still boasts, “That’s the best $4,000 I ever spent…I had you and your son running around like crazy–didn’t I?” Whereupon my son responded, “Thanks, Andre, got any more money for me?”

Whereupon, Mr. Quintero slinked out of the restaurant.

Taxpayer, “My M.A. in education was followed by two “ABD’s”–and yes, it means all but dissertation. My PhD was interrupted by my full-time employmnent as a school teacher/college professor (which, by the way was also challenged by Mr. Quintero–HE LOST THAT CHALLENGE, TOO!”

Veronic and Taxpayer (Why not do something really bold?)

    Identify yourself as I do.

    Enough already.

Is Andre running ON his record or FROM his record at Rio Hondo Community College. During his eight years of

  • Taxpayer

Mr. Siegrist. I do support you.

I’m sorry you have interpreted my comments as being against you. They are not.

I wish you luck in the upcoming election and I agree that Mr. Quintero does have some ‘splainin to do when it comes to the state of Rio Hondo.

  • Anonymous Resident

    Mr. Siegrist,
The need to stay anonymous with critical comments is necessary for most El Monte residents. We all saw the police intimidation that was going on during the measure P compaign. When one senior citizen was arrested for stealing a campaign sign, the cops and police helicopter came out in full force. Andre Quintero could not wait to press charges. Not all of us have relatives that are attorneys, nor can we afford to hire attorneys to protect us from the POA and Quintero. We remain anonymous in our comments. At least the Tribune is giving us a forum in which we can say what is on our mind without going to jail.

  • Another resident

Got some POA propaganda in the mail today. What a bunch of garbage. It had a picture of Quintero on it. When did he get so pudgy? Andre…you need to get out and walk the precincts….a brisk walk.

Henry Velasco is the ONLY Republican I have ever voted for and probably will EVER vote for. Besides, he is not on the City Council so he doesn’t vote on issues. Other than Mr. Velasco, I would vote the worst Democrat over any Republican any day.

The reason the police don’t back him is because years ago as treasurer he questioned wasteful spending on their part when they turned in their receipts, am I correct?

Mr. and Mrs. Velasco raised their children here in El Monte. They’ve been a part of the community for MANY years. When did this Thomas guy running against Velasco surface? I’ve heard that he only recently moved here just to run for office. Why would he want the job anyway.. he makes more money with his pension than the average person makes in years. His running for treasurer seems shady to me.

  • Resident

Richard Thomas is retired from the El Monte Police Dept. His pension from the city is over $100,000. He and his buddies in the POA are a big part of the reason why this city is in the financial trouble it is in. Velasco is no ones puppet. The police and fire unions don’t own him. Beware of candidates being endorsed and sponsored by the police POA and fire fighters union. Thomas, Macias, Quintero, and Gomez have all been bought and paid for by the employee unions. They will represent the unions who have financed their campaigns, not the good, hard working people of El Monte.

  • Think

It is very tragic for the city.

These candidates who receive lots of dollars and campaign support from police unions and fire unions have very little choice at the end of the day but to do the bidding of those who have “invested” in them. And make no mistke for these unions this is an “investment” that they EXPECT to get a return on.

How many times have you heard someone tell you about a candidate who was young, fresh-faced and idealistic when the got into politics but changed over time because the SYSTEM simply doesn’t reward honesty or independence.

Think about that before you give the police union and the fire union another 4 years to run our city council.

When you vote, think about those candidates who have stood up to the police union and fire union and cast your vote for them. These candidates are the ones who will listen to you.

I HEARD SLICK ANDY IN HIS STATEMENT TO SEIU SAYS that HE’S ACCOMMPLISHED ALL OF THIS OWN GOALS AS RIO HONDO’S PRESIDENT……

DOES THAT MEAN PUTTING THE COLLEGE’S ACCREDITATION IN JEOPARADY WAS ONE OF HIS GOALS?

I HATE TO THINK WHAT HE WILL DO FOR EL MONTE.

2 Rio Hondo College school board candidates vie for open El Monte seat

EL MONTE – The two candidates running for the Area 1 seat on the Rio Hondo College board of trustees in the Nov. 3 election say their passion for education led them to make a bid to replace trustee Andre Quintero.

But it isn’t long before the differences between Norma E. Garcia, 37, and David Siegrist, 67, start to show – particularly when it comes to the biggest challenges facing the 25,000-student college.

The college’s Area 1 seat, which represents the city of El Monte, is one of three seats up for grabs in the Nov. 3 election. Area 3 incumbent Angela Acosta-Salazar is also facing a challenge from Crystal C. Chavez, while candidates Madeline Shapiro and Michelle Yanez-Jiminez are battling it out for the Area 5 seat of Garry Couso-Vasquez, who is not running for re-election.

For Garcia, the state’s budget crisis and education cuts are at the forefront of the challenges facing Rio Hondo College, which is experiencing an enrollment boom in the wake of the recession that has displaced workers heading back to school for job retraining.

“We’re very dependent on the state economy and budget, and it puts community colleges in a vulnerable position,” Garcia said. “That’s why we need leaders in the community who are going to put the community first. Classes are being cut, and as a potential board member, my concern is to make sure our work force is being protected, and that courses will be made available in the community I represent.”

But for Siegrist – who served on the Rio Hondo board from 1994 to 2002 – his priority, if elected, is the college’s accreditation.

Accreditation serves as validation of a school’s program and transcripts/degrees.

Earlier this year, an accrediting commission put Rio Hondo on “warning” status and detailed the areas in which the college needed to improve – human resources, leadership and governance.

The college turned in a report this week describing how it is addressing the deficiencies, and will get a site visit next month so the commission can independently confirm it is on the right track, officials said.

“This is a major issue and we’ve got to solve it,” Siegrist said. “Everything is related to that. It’s a bad way to start.”

On top of that, however, Siegrist said he has four other priorities: getting more Rio Hondo classes to be offered in the city; avoiding a $5 million expense for an off-site center in El Monte when there are vacant elementary schools available; curbing employee lawsuits; and pushing for more alumni contributions to the Rio Hondo College Foundation.

“I just have a passion for education, and Rio Hondo College for me is a treasure for our community,” Siegrist said. “There’s no way we can lose it.”

Garcia agreed, saying the city of El Monte is a community that “highly values education – you just need to point to all the bond measures we’ve approved to ensure we have quality facilities.

“My vision is, we need to bring this El Monte satellite campus to fruition,” she said. “For me, having the presence of Rio Hondo College in this community is key to making it accessible to the residents of the community.

“And I want to be on the board to make sure that happens.”

And, the present Board AT RIO HONDO (NOT ME, THANK GOD–NO WAY I WOULD HAVE APPROVED IT!) granted a new
    contract to Dr. T. Martinez:

a whopper salary increase of 16%…he now makes $215,000 per year for he next four years.

He gets $750 per month for driving his car. (SHOULD PAY HIS OWN WAY!)

$100 THOUSAND TO $150 THOUSAND WAS ADDED TO HIS STATE TEACHER’S RETIRMENT

MEDICAL CARE FOR HIMSELF AND SIGNIFICANT OTHER FOR
    LIFE

And…a reserved parking spot on the campus.

    GREED HAS NO BOUNDS.

    WHO APPROVED THIS:

    Andre Quintero & the Board

And, Andre now selects his replacement.

Lord Quintero has dubbed his successor.

    Oh, My God!

  • In Need of Respect

Andre Quintero for mayor? What a joke! He has surely stuck Rio Hondo College with a whopper. Even though we are facing huge cutbacks in funding and sections are being cut, he renewed the contract of college president, Dr. Martinez, even though there was a year left on his contract. Andre knew he would not be a trustee for long, so decided to reward his buddy with a three-year extension.

Oh, by the way, he gave the president about $200,000 in additional benefits by giving him lifetime medical benefits and buying years of service credit. So, the students are losing classes due to budget cuts, but the president is getting fat off of Mr. Quintero. Take him please. I learned all about this at

“The president is getting fat off of Mr. Quintero”…..YOU COULD ALSO SAY MR. QUINTERO IS GETTING FAT AS WELL….has anyone seen big boy lately. He looks like a cross between the Pinguen from the Batman series and Uncle Fester from the Addams Family.

I keep hearing people allude to the possibility that he doesn’t even live in El Monte. Anyone have details about this?

If this is true he would not only be committing a crime by taking office in El Monte, he may well be committing a crime right now if he is not living with the Rio Hondo College District.

If this is true this is very serious and Steve Cooley should be notified immediately.

Here is The Address for Mr. Quintero..

FIRE UNION BOSSES SAY THE MOST ADORABLE THINGS….when they think you couldn’t possibly find out.

“Smilin’” Johhny Smolin, Local 1014 Treasurer said:

“Our current contract is one of the Local’s greatest successes in recent memory. No matter how you portray it, WE ARE SEEING NEARLY TWENTY PERCENT MORE MONEY IN OUR POCKETS.”

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE “SHORED UP” EL MONTE?

AND HE WONDERS WHY WE CAN’T AFFORD TO KEEP A FIRE STATION OPEN

  • Mike Camacho

Why do firemen even complain about their pay? They ONLY work 10 days a month, get to wash their car, watch the super bowl, eat using our electricity, water and infrastructure to do so ALL that tax payers pay for. Of course we appreciate their life saving work, but take a step back, you ONLY work 10 24hr shifts a month, GOOD money for GOOD work, you work LESS days then you are home with your family, wive and husbands. How about more work, less complaining and 20% across the board pay cuts for the FIRE DEPARTMENT!
