Answers, Part IX

Here is the ninth set of answers:

Who do you think will have a better pro career: Mayo or Westbrook?
Westbrook. He plays better defense and has a better body structure.

You quoted Micah Reed with “… Now, if we’re changing the snap count in practice, when we get to a game it’s going to help us out….”
Did you confirm with players that the snap count was never changed the whole year during the actual games, vs never changed during practices? Was this week the first time you were aware of the snap count issue?
The whole year. That is why I wrote “the coaching staff decided to go on the first count all season.” And, yes, the players are quoted extensively in the story talking about it. …And I found out about it in spring practice, but every time I was going to write about it, someone got injured (Patrick Cowan or Ben Olson) or something else transpired. So I saved it for training camp.

Does Mike Schmidt, the JC transfer linebacker who redshirted last year, look like he can contribute this year and earn some playing time?
It would take a few injuries for him to break into the linebacker rotation at this point, but he may play on special teams.

Taylor Embree has drawn praise as a surehanded pass catcher but has not generated the excitement that many people feel about Moutra and Rosario. Is the problem that Embree lacks the speed and athleticism to be a game breaker, and therefore has less potential than the other two receivers?
That is exactly what it is. Embree doesn’t have the wow factor, but if he remains consistent and catches the ball, he will eventually get a chance. Plus, he needs to get stronger.

It has been reported that Kevin Craft has not thrown well in the first two practices. What seems to be the problem? Is he just too nervous? Does he risk being supplanted by Prince or Crissman if he continues to struggle?
He is throwing a lot high, and his accuracy has been poor. I don’t know what the problem is, but I don’t think the coaching staff felt 100 percent comfortable with him after the spring, which is why they had Kevin Prince come in during the summer rather than January 2009, which was the original plan. However, I think it will be hard for Prince or Crissman to supplant Craft as the backup.

So you are a Liverpool fan, huh? How far back do you think they are going to finish behind Manchester United this year?
Indeed, I love my Reds. And we’re about the Champions League, not the EPL. (But, to answer your questions, about 12 points back.)

Do you think my fellow Chaminade Eagle alum Logan Paulsen has a shot at a descent NFL career?
He has an excellent chance. I talked to several of UCLA’s former NFL coaches and they all rave about him. He was just terrible under used (or not used at all) last season, for a variety of reasons out of his hands.

Last year, it was reported that each of the incoming freshmen football players passed their summer classes with good grades. How did this year’s incoming freshmen perform in summer school? Unlike last year, I have not seen a press release from UCLA on the subject.
It may be too early since the first summer session just ended. Or, perhaps they didn’t fair as well. Or, perhaps the focus is on practice and a new era.

Do you know why we didn’t recruit Jemari Roberts? He recently committed to Stanford.
I know is UCLA looked at him in the spring, but then backed off. I’m not sure why.
