UCLA hits 10-win mark with Sun Bowl romp over Hokies

In Wednesday’s edition of the Daily News:
– My story on UCLA’s 42-12 win over Virginia Tech in the Sun Bowl, and where the Bruins sit heading into 2014. (Mainly, awaiting Brett Hundley’s NFL draft decision.)
– Jill Painter’s column on why quarterback Hundley should go pro after his standout showing in El Paso.
– A notebook on linebacker Jordan Zumwalt, who closed his UCLA career with co-MVP honors in the Sun Bowl.

Wow, at least we got the same number of wins as USC

    • ProbationU

And if we had that extra game against the always tough Rainbow Warriors of Hawaii, we just might have 11 And last time I checked, we beat SC and we are ranked higher….but it doesn’t matter because SC sucked…Zumwalt is dirty…Hundley is leaving….Mora is leaving…and once again JB spent his whole afternoon talking to Wang during the game whining about Zumwalt. Maybe you are a Bruin fan in Trojan drag.

      • Joe Blow

Not my fault you were afraid of Hawaii and wouldn’t schedule them. Big Wang and I have the same thing in common. Ask your satisfied wife.

        • ProbationU

Big Wang and you is an oxymoron. Your big New Years Eve date left you with carpal tunnel.

          • Joe Blow

Not as bad as the carpal tunnel your wife got!!!

          • ProbationU

Don’t I know it….were you watching through the window? I knew you were a little off, but a peeping Tom? That is even lower than I thought.

          • Joe Blow

Hard to see anything with her hands working me so fast and hard. But she’s good at it.

          • Yogibear

You mean your own hands. You’re just imagining it’s someone else’s wife’s hands…..

          • Joe Blow

I know I promised you, but since you’re popping off, sorry…..it was YOUR hands. Many thanks.

            Joe’s an odd bird.

According to him, he “knows” everyone from your mother to your wife, to your daughter, to himself, to you.

Too bad he doesn’t know football.

          • Joe Blow

            More than you.

        • ProbationU

For a Trojan fan of Rey Thugaluga, Taylor Mays and T.J. McDonald to complain about cheap shots is truly humorous. Blow is the gift that just keeps on giving.

          • Joe Blow

So that makes it RIGHT? Guess you’ll be getting your .28 tonight wearing your #36 jersey.

          • ProbationU

They were clean hits. Shouldn’t have been a flag IMO or in the announcer’s opinions…who are less biased than your or me. That guy had to be hit hard to be brought down. We learned that 2 plays earlier.

          • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

Bullies always cry when someone smacks them on the nose.

That’s why Joe’s whining about the Bruins being big meanies.

          • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

(That’s not to mention the previous decades of Trojan thuggery.)

        • EncinitasBruin

Hey really exposed us on that one PU: our fear of the mighty Rainbows…

          • Joe Blow

Then why don’t you schedule them? Or get a early “bowl” game for the extra? Chicken, that’s why. Cluck, cluck, cluck

          • EncinitasBruin

You got us, Joe. We are scared… that’s why, instead, we play “softer” teams like Nebraska and Texas in the preseason, rather than mighty Hawaii, BC, and Utah State. Please… you can do better…

          • Joe Blow

Neither was worth a darn. Our schedule was MUCH tougher.

          • EncinitasBruin

That’s why in 2013 SOS, UCLA is #16 compared to SC at #25… You’re just getting sloppy now, my friend.

          • ProbationU

You might want to research the strength of schedule rankings.

          • Joe Blow

Don’t need too. Don’t care. You think you’re back, but you never were there. So sad.

          • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

            Don’t need too. Don’t care.

Liars are to facts like cats are to water.

          • Joe Blow

            You sniffing PU’s gas again?

          • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

            Especially when you played UCLA.

          • Joe Blow

You’re boring me again. You think you’re top shelf. YOU ARE NOT. And if Hundley leaves, see you at the bottom. Happy New Year.

          • EncinitasBruin

Now, we’ve been through this Joe: just cuz you say I said it, doesn’t mean I did. Got it? Happy New Year.

          • Joe Blow

You’re trying to split hairs. You’re program is second shelf. Always has been, always will be. Sorry

    • daldigle

Joe spending another lonely new years eve lamenting another Bruin victory…we own you!

      • Joe Blow

You should have beaten VT, they are horrible. But to have all those cheap shots is a disgrace to the Pac 12

        • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

If anyone knows cheap shots, it’s the Trojans.

(Considering that they know nothing about class, honor, or good, clean, hard-nosed football, it’s understandable that Joe’s confused.)

        • anno nimus

#4 passing defense and #13 defense overall?? Allowing 104 years in the ground is not exactly a horrible team. Alabama beat them 35-10, iv rest my case.

          • Joe Blow

            They weren’t ranked. Anywhere.

    • jameskatt

Is the alcohol making you depressed?

    • anno nimus

Yeah, and you also had a 13 game regular season schedule, but you had 4 losses, to our 3, and we beat the snot out of you, so it’s apples and oranges. 35-14.

      • Joe Blow

That’s because you were afraid to schedule a 13th game. Of course you won, we had a lousy team this year. Funny to see how you clowns measure your ego and success by beating SC under any circumstances. Laughable. You’ll always continue to be second tier in FB. Oh, and let me beat you to it: ucla will beat SC in basketball this weekend. Big deal.

  • Cliff Sakata

    Just ignore Joe Blow.
    He just wants attention.

    • Joe Blow

Why not? You all ignore the truth about your program. Dirty, filthy and cheating. But you won 10 games. Wow.

      • UCLA Owns the Rose Bowl

Poor pUSC… “UCLA’s mean, mommy! They hit me really hard.” Grow a pair, dude! Love how UCLA starts beating the carp out of people and suddenly the pUSC fans start crying… Another sign of the Bruin’s dominance!
YOU are ignoring the truth: UCLA is tougher and better than SC as a program. Think about this: if Hundley goes pro, he will leave UNDEFEATED vs pUSC. More focused, better players, better coach. Admit THAT and we might take you seriously…

        • Joe Blow

Big deal. We’ve had many players leave undefeated vs ND and ucla. We don’t care about ucla. Dominance? Hahahahaha What a joke. Win a NC and wake me up.

          • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

            You first.

          • Joe Blow

Bet you wear Clippers’ gear too.

      • jameskatt

You’re so funny Joe. You are actually much nicer when you are drunk.

Since you have stated you are not a UCLA fan, then what program are you from? USC? Bruinsnation?

      • anno nimus

        Bwahahaha!!! Now WE’RE the cheaters???

        • Joe Blow

Only since Woodie and Papa Sam.

  • Bigwoof1

Jill Painter’s article stating Hundley should go pro demonstrates exactly why he should stay – his running is excellent, his passing needs work. Guess what, an NFL QB has to be an excellent passer to succeed, and both Brett’s accuracy and decision making need to improve. One more year, behind an experienced line, and with a top bowl game and he could be a legitimate Heisman contender and one of the very top picks in the draft.

    • LTEfan

I agree he should stay to work on his passing and reading of defenses. Unfortunately, I think he will declare for the NFL draft. I hope to be wrong.

      • Joe Blow

HUGE mistake if he stays. His stock will drop like a rock. Teams have him figured out. With the right talent, they’ll stop him, like Stanford, Oregon and ASU.

        • jameskatt

Nah. If Brett stays, he will have more seasoning and will be ready for the pro game. Currently he is too slow for the pros.

        • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

That’s right: Take away three of Hundley’s best offensive linemen and replace them with true freshmen.

That’s the only hope USC had against Hundley, and the second-stringers rose to the occasion.

Joe’s desperation is palpable, transparent, and delightful.

  • Mark

I don’t root for injuries. These are college kids not making money (at the moment) and an injury could cost them dearly in future earnings. Ucla, though, has “ended the career” of a top-level QB for the 2nd year in a row. (I agree with the CBS boys that it should not have been a penalty on Zumwalt.) That is the kind of toughness and hard-nosed play is what will help change Ucla’s perception and how it performs. That’s a good thing.

    • EncinitasBruin

Very difficult to tell a linebacker to “ease up” when he’s about to get a hit on a QB. Watched that play several times at regular speed–NOT a dirty hit. A hard, tough hit. Totally changes if you watch in slow motion, which doesn’t give a realistic perspective of the timing…. LOVE our new defensive attitude. The fact that the SC trolls are caling us “dirty and cheap” is always a good sign!

      • jameskatt

I Loved THAT HIT. Aggression like that wins football games.

The winning team injures more opponent players. That is football.

Football is a collision sport. Injuries are inevitable. That is why football professionals don’t last long.

  • SonOfWestwood

Jill Painter should keep her bad ideas to herself. Everybody has an opinion about what Brett should do and exactly none of those opinions are worth a damn. Kid has to do what he thinks is best for him. Period.

  • EncinitasBruin

Happy New Year, Bruin fans! What a great way to end the year: 10 wins for the first time in 8 years… Top 15 final ranking… Mora and staff with MAJOR SoCal and national recruinting momentum as hone in on signing day, just over a month from now… Great nucleus of talent returning next season… 2-0 roll against SC (Mora and Hundley UNDEFEATED vs Troy). It’s GREAT to be a Bruin!

Things we learned from the hapless Trojans at the Sun Bowl. First, don’t embarrass the university and the PAC-12 by showing up late and/or missing functions entirely. Second, don’t let you team act like idiots as if they hadn’t been to a bowl game before….as SC finally reached a bowl game after being banned and did not know how to behave. Third, when playing against an inferior opponent with Tech in the name, win the game.

    • Joe Blow

Or playing a superior team like Baylor, don’t get KILLED

  • ;kjb;pkjb;kjb

just a question,,,,, Why arent any of your asst. coaches HC candidates? Clearly they are amazing

  • Joe Blow

Don’t worry about Mora, Texas isn’t that DUMB.

  • http://amillennialist.blogspot.com Santiago Matamoros

I can’t recall any Bruins knocking out other teams’ players with blows to the legs; those hits on ‘SC and VT were standard, nose-to-nose, heads-up, 3-D-coming-at-you, in-the-course-of-the-game football hits.

Leave it to a Trojan to whine about clean-but-devastating hits being “dirty.”

    • Joe Blow

We’ll see. Hundley will NOT make it out of 2014 healthy, unless he’s holding a clipboard in the NFL.

  • Bigwoof1

This is a little late, but I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere else. We apparently changed our defensive lineup, playing only 3 linebackers and 5 defensive backs (Brandon Sermons, 4th on team in tackles in the game) most of the game. Seems like it worked out well – kudos to the coaching staff.
