USC Morning Buzz

SPOT.BILT.AD

Here’s a Spot-bilt ad featuring O.J. Simpson in case anyone at USC ever forgets what kind of shoes he wore as a player (along with adidas). But certainly not the Nike swoosh like that John McKay statue.

MCKAY.FEET

If you think this is a non-issue that McKay’s incorrectly adorned in Nikes at the McKay Center, ask yourself these questions: If Oregon pulled a stunt like this, would you be ripping the Ducks for being beholden to Phil Knight? And can you think of an SEC or Big Ten school where fans would sit back and allow something like this to take place?

Even Petros Papadakis weighed in on his show (at the 6:15 mark) yesterday.

  1. I could really care less. It was interesting at first Scooter but man is that sorry horse you stumbled upon dead. Do you know how gargoyles got started on cathedrals? The carvers were bored and put them there as a joke at first and then they became fashionable for who could do the best gargoyle. This type of stuff happens on all the good sculptings.
When I go look at that statue, I think “what a great football coach”. When you go look at that statue you get down on your back, look at his foot, probably look up his leg as it may give you a shiver and think “what is that swoosh doin there?”
Do you know why people don’t think youre normal? You won’t let this type of stuff go. I thought at first you were being funny, but now, you’re way to far over the funny line into just plain weird.

  2. Reminds one of that statue of Babe Ruth showing him swinging the bat as a right handed hitter.

The shoes on John McKay, while minor, do matter if only because few items back then had ‘logos’ on them ‘Izod’?

  3. ok, Scottie… you first reported this “scandal” on June 11….here it is, a few days later and, besides whining, what have YOU done, Wolfie, to uncover the reasons that this happened?…and why is it taking you so long to speak with someone Inside USC to get answers??..Of course, this smells like a money grab by someone within the USC administration…ASK SOMEONE!!!…instead, you’re now blaming the USC fans for not rioting in the streets and marching in protest of this travesty….unlike you, educated people have more important things to worry about, Scottie..paying our bills, finding a job, the economy, hunger, poverty, foreign policy, personal safety, etc….please don’t misunderstand, I’m not happy about this either, but this won’t be my “Summer Crusade” like is yours, as Petros mocking put it…..I sincerely doubt that Vanderbilt, Northwestern or Indiana would be burning Phil Knight in effigy over this sort of stunt…..

    • Scottie likes to BE the news. Of course that went a little too far when he was expelled from USC practices. I think I hear a poll coming…

    • Come on Garry Bleauz, why don’t you put down the Fatburger and ask Pat Haden yourself?

      • I’m not the incompetent sports hack who brought it up…..it’s called following through on a story….BTW….I prefer the burgers at Fathers Office……if I am in the mood for a little danger, I have been known to venture to Hawkins House of Burgers in Watts….

    • Scott “Copy and Paste” Wolf – The Complainer and whiner of the Daily News

  4. Take a knee Bucket – I Got This One!!!!!

This is a none issue. Nike donated money and got some PR in return, not unlike uniforms and other athletic gear. Anyone who has been around sports understands how this works. And the bottom line is no one cares if McKay has a swoosh.

    • Wolf has turned this into another OCD fueled obsession. The guy is a maniac and needs professional help. As long as he continues to live in denial, this is the crap we are stuck with

    • Yeah Helen, let’s put George Washington in Boston Whaler and give his troops M 16s! It’s called historical accuracy. It’s a bronze statue that will be around long after people have forgot who Phil Knight was. I do wish Wolf would actually do 10 min of research and answer the question.

  5. So typical- a “made up” scandal that only Wolf and that slob Petros care about. If the Daily News ever makes you the ucla beat writer, I might consider getting that rag delivered again.

    • At one point in Petros’ USC football career he was asked to become the waterboy….ouch!

        • Correct, he couldn’t handle the waterboy duties at Cal so he transfered

His daddy paid big bucks to get him on the football team

    • This is Scott wolfs breaking news.. He did not copy and paste this report.. so this is his story and will bring it up at the next student body meeting..

  6. Future historical inaccuracies, after Steve Ballmer joins the BoT: Pat Haden player statue carrying a Windows phone in pocket and has hair on his head.

  7. Look a reporter who does his homework. Who Schedule is harder?

    1. Florida State: Oklahoma State in Arlington, The Citadel, Notre Dame, Florida. Not even close. Far and away the nation’s best.

    2. Clemson: at Georgia, South Carolina State,
Georgia State, South Carolina. Strange schedule. Two heavyweights, two
Division I-AA foes. But still better than virtually everyone.

    3. Southern Cal: Fresno State, at Boston College, Notre Dame. No pushovers. Not one.

    4. UCLA: at Virginia, Memphis, at Texas. The schedule dips fast. But if you only play one rumdum, you’re way ahead of the game.

    5. Ohio State: at Navy, Virginia Tech, Kent State, Cincinnati. Solid schedule. Not great, but not terrible. Which makes it great in 2014.

    6. Northwestern: California, Northern Illinois,
Western Illinois, at Notre Dame. The only real difference from Ohio
State is that the Buckeyes aren’t playing a I-AA foe.

    7. Georgia: Clemson, Troy, Charleston Southern, Georgia Tech. Two legitimate opponents. The Bulldogs will have their SEC charter revoked.

    8. West Virginia: Alabama in Atlanta, Towson, at Maryland. I still wish West Virginia was playing Pitt, but this is a good schedule.

    9. Texas: North Texas, Brigham Young, UCLA in Arlington. Welcome to the big time, Charlie Strong.

    10. Wisconsin: LSU in Houston, Western Illinois,
Bowling Green, South Florida. The OSU-Mississippi State game of 2013 at
    Reliant Stadium has become LSU-Wisconsin.

  8. Nothing like using “Juice” to make your point on the 20th Anniversary! Scotty, you have found a new low and apparently a new obsession. If you can find a way to work Lane Kiffin into this story, it will be the perfect storm for you.

  9. I wish they would bring back the Spot Bilt shoes. They were cool. Nike is nothing but a glorified lady of the night, just like ucla. See, Nike and ucla have something in common.

  10. From the Anthony Davis biography:

“Anthony Davis was the first college and pro athlete to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated wearing shoes featuring the now famous “swoosh” symbol of the corporate giant, Nike. In the early 70’s the company was barely beyond “mom and pop” however, after Anthony Davis had finished back-to-back trouncing of the UCLA Bruins, where he broke OJ Simpson’s career rushing record and followed up with “The Comeback” against arch-rival Notre Dame, Nike hit the big time – all on the back of one of the greatest Trojans to every carry the ball. Davis credits Coaches, Rod Dedeaux and John McKay as the two greatest influences on his life – they were the men who taught Anthony that anything worth having, was worth the fight.”

    • Finally AD gets his due. AD is my all-time favorite SUCC FB player. His hip-hop up-shift overdrive step once he found the right hole in a Student Body sweep was a joy to watch – except against UCLA. I heard his first ND kick off return on my way home and watched the last half of AD’s destruction of a excellent Notre Dame team. If anyone deserves a statue in front of HH, It’s the great AD.

      • On your way home? From bucket’s double wide? Or working the lunch shift at McDonald’s in Ontario?

      • Sorry you missed the connection, bro.

Anthony Davis was on the cover of SI in 1974 with a swoosh on his shoes. John McKay coached USC from 1960 to 1975. So it is very conceivable that McKay wore Nike shoes as well.

      • This coming from the expert. Dude, you are too much. How’s the Alcindor special fitting?

      • Maybe they can put a SET OF “GOLDEN ARCH’S” on top of the Stanley Cup???
        fit un Knuckleheads!

  11. Wolfman, you are taking your stellar reportage to a whole ‘nother. LEVEL!!

This story is BLOWING UP, and the Dummies are SEETHING with jealousy and RESENTMENT!!!

BRAVO wolfman, they HAVE TO change the statue now, you have FORCED their hand!!! As much as HH will HATE to do it, you left them no CHOICE!!!

    Sublime!!!
