USC-UCLA Picture Of The Day

Here’s a picture of the 1979 USC-UCLA game at the Coliseum. UCLA tight end Tim Wrightman is covered by USC linebacker Larry McGrew.

  1. USC slaughtered ucla 49-14 that day. I was there and it was a real laugher. The next game USC played was in the Rose Bowl, a 17-16 Charlie White-led victory over OHIO ST.

Team finished 11-0-1, the only blemish a 21-21 tie against STAN when John Elway, only a frosh, brought the Cardinal from behind and #1 ranked USC just could not stop him. Robinson said somethjng like USC was “paralyzed” if I remember correctly.

    • Blew a 21-0 lead and ended up with the tie. If that team won that game and finished perfect they would have gone down as one of the best ever, if not the best.
The players on that team and the NFL careers they had make up an amazing list.

    • Word was that Terry Donahue was terrified he would be fired if he lost a fifth straight to USC, so he brought in former Army head coach Homer Smith in 1980 to install a modern passing offense and Smith ended up saving Donahue’s career.

      • You lose five straight in the battle for L.A. and I don’t care who you are, you’re in trouble.

Jeff Fisher saved Donahue’s job in ’80. The bruins were headed for another loss when with a couple mins to go, Fisher tipped a deep pass, while going for the pick instead of just knocking it down, to Freeman McNeil. Horrible play in USC history.

        • He had a knack for being able to beat USC when his job security was pretty shaky. He probably saved himself at least a couple times.

  2. My favorite game of all time. The crowd was louder than any game I’ve ever been to at the Coliseum, half Trojan/half bruin. At halftime the bruin faithful had lost faith and streamed for the exits. It was great! Life was never better.

  3. Caption correction: Mr McGrew short arm coverage failed to prevent Mr. Wrightman from catching the pretty pass.

I might add UCLA went on to defeat the bozos a record 8 consecutive times – still a cross town rivalry FB all-time record.
