The Three-Headed Monster

I wanted to revisit my report card comments on Sam Darnold. It’s not just the wide receivers and offensive line. The playcalling is also an issue, especially with the three-headed monster calling plays (Tee Martin, Clay Helton, Tyson Helton). I believe Tyson Helton calls a lot of the pass plays, which probably surprises the fans. I wonder how some of this confuse the QB during a game or if there are delays in the play calls.

  1. Anyone who watches the games and doesn’t find any fault in darnold’s play as well is beyond delusional. OL, receivers and play calling isn’t helping but those guys aren’t missing reads, forcing balls and turning the ball over at an alarming rate.

    • Why do you think Sam has gotten worse ? Any idea ?

      POORLY COACHED WR’s,
      POORLY COACHED OL
      POOR PLAYCALLING

Now, if you were playing QB and were constantly running for your life because the OL is awful, you might force throws.

If your WR’s haven’t been coached up, you might miss reads.

If the playcalling is so bad that the other team knows what you’re going to run by what personnel is in the game, you might have issues.

Darnold’s footwork needs to be fixed, why haven’t the 3 morons done anything about it ?

      • I love how the rah rahs always blame the student athletes instead of the hired help. They used to defend Kiffin and Sark the Drunk and Bob Connelly.

      • You make a damn good argument Cortez. If we continue to struggle, I don’t know how Darnold goes pro. I guess that is some light at the end of the tunnel.

  2. Same system they used the previous year when Darnold was winning all of those games. Darnold is not the first QB to have a sophomore slump. Coaches now have tape on Darnold and can game plan against him. Wolf and the rest of the media wanted to give Darnold the Heisman after last year. I said let’s see what he does for a few games this year. He only played equivalent to 1 season of high school QB and 10 games in college. Everybody knows he has problems with the deep ball and as a result are creeping up. Time for coaches and Darnold to figure it out.

  3. If a team wants to play fast, explosive football on offense, it needs 3 people checking off with and/or overruling each other on pass plays.

  4. Thx sw, that explains why T Helton, C Helton, and T Martin are always playing rock paper scissors, when USC is on offense.

  5. Haven’t a clue about Wolf’s 3 headed monster but one of the three uglies I loath just got tossed at Fenway – good riddance to the Red Sox…next in 2 hours from NYC – dump the Yanks. The last of my three is unlikely to get thrown but hope springs eternal with regard to ‘vinnie’s boys’!

    • Aha! Another clue to the slimey psyche of Alvarado!
He loathes excellence and success. Boston, Yankee & Dodger baseball, all historical hallmarks of success are his enemies. Before you leave this session, Ruskie, tell me how you feel about Coach Wooden.
      See you next week……

  6. I think having Sam check to the sideline for plays delays any momentum we are building. The other teams seem to be keeping the flow when things are humming i.e. Washington State

    • Why are THREE people calling the plays ? Is Tee too stupid to call pass plays ? Why is Fredo not calling all the plays ? What a clustefook

    • All throughout my career I noticed that really and truly average people need to be in complete control if they’re given any kind of supervision over anything. They know ‘good.’ In fact, they insist on ‘good.’

  7. I think it is time to admit that Darnold needs to take some of the responsibility here. He’s not playing well and needs to improve. He personally put us in bad position with two of his turn-overs on Saturday. He’s missed several throws and turned the ball over several times. Those were not on the coaches at all. I like Darnold as much as the next guy, but he’s definitely not playing to his ability and needs to take some of the responsibility for the offensive struggles.

    • It’s the pressure. It’s hard to perform when your OL cannot block worth a damn. He kind of reminds me of Phillip Rivers.

  8. The current state of mediocre Trojan football is all part of Pat Haden’s master plan. Pat Haden has been wanting to reduce Coliseum seating capacity for quite some time now. What better way for Haden to see his plan come to fruition than to have signed Clay Helton for 5 years knowing that sheer talent alone couldn’t hold out and Helton’s coaching ability would eventually take over and drive away the fans. Pat Haden’s plan seems to be working ahead of schedule with plenty of time left on Helton’s contract for the renovation to be complete.

  9. Paul Finebaum went hard at the Sooners. He said “Some are calling them Choke-lahoma”

  10. So there were THREE people on earth that all thought at the same time that a designed QB run up the middle on 3rd and 9 from the 10 yard line was the best play to run? I can’t get my head around that.

    • It happens, Rock2112. Try to imagine David Geffen, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Stephen Spielberg putting their heads together and, then, giving the green light to “Young Sherlock Holmes.”

  11. All the plays are scripted and sent in from sideline, it’s not as if three different guys are signaling. Sam is not confused, he’s just not playing well. He is a turnover machine. Make all the excuses you want, he’s just not having a good year. Great QB’s make up for poor team play, they don’t add to it.

  12. We can surmise the mess this program is in is slowly sinking into pure mediocrity. The only reason this didn’t happen sooner is the ability of a few skilled players started clicking and able to keep the team winning last year. Clay Helton for all intensive purposes was just along for the ride. He and his chosen crew have shown they do not have the coaching knowledge to get players improving as the season progresses. Don’t tell me this team is playing any better against Oregon St. as it did Western Michigan.
