Notre Dame builds relationship with Carter’s Lokeni Toailoa

While the Carter Lions football program is in the offseason, the recruiting process continues for linebacker Lokeni Toailoa.

Toailoa had representatives from both, the San Diego State University Aztecs and the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish football programs visit him this week.

Both schools are among the 18 colleges to offer Toailoa a scholarship.

He also stated that it is the fifth time the Fighting Irish have taken a visit to speak with him since he received the offer from them.

“We have already established a good relationship,” he said. “It’s huge for any program (to take the time to visit) but having a prestigious program like Notre Dame makes it that much more special.”

While only a junior, Notre Dame has expressed to Toailoa where he would fit within its defense.

“They like me at (middle) linebacker,” he said. “Especially since they have two seniors at the spot now who will be gone soon, but they also believe my versatility could have me at any one of their linebacker positions.

In regards to where his dream school may be at, Toailoa stated that as he grew up, he did have a dream school, but since the recruiting process has taken off and it’s all changed.

“My dream school is (which ever college) offers the best education in what I want to do,” he explained. “…a place I can see myself attending even if I wasn’t playing football.”

While Toailoa believes the process has changed his mind set on certain things, he still believes the process has been a positive experience.

“It’s honestly been a fun experience but I know time is running out,” he said. “I plan on really looking into schools now and narrowing it down soon.”

REV, Carter expect key players back for Citrus Belt League football showdown

Malik Lovette Homecoming

REV star Malik Lovette, who is bound for Oregon, is expected to be 100 percent for Friday’s showdown with Carter.

GAME PREVIEW: Redlands East Valley (8-1, 6-0) at Carter (8-1, 6-0), 7 p.m.
It’s really no surprise that these two teams are playing for the league championship. “When the schedule game out, we didn’t want to tell the kids this, but we figured this would be for the league title,” REV coach Kurt Bruich said.
There’s a lot at stake in this game, more than just a CBL title, which would be Carter’s first in football. REV is ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Inland Division, and would presumably be seeded first if the Wildcats win.
Both teams are getting healthy at the right time. For the first time all season, REV is getting 6-foot, 220-pound Sr. RB/LB Taimon Faimalo back from injury after he broke his foot in the team’s scrimmage. “You feel good having him on third-and-short,” Bruich said. WR/RB Malik Lovette, has played sparingly in recent weeks with a “hamstring issue,” but is 100 percent this week, Bruich said.
Carter, meanwhile, will be getting back RB Aaron Brown and LB Dayvion Hodnett, who had been out with concussions. Lineman Lynell Smith had returned two weeks ago from a torn ligament in his foot, but is “close to 100 percent” this week.
Carter coach Alex Pierce wants to use his offense and defense to limit REV’s big-play capability. “We’ve seen on film, when teams pile up on Malik, other guys can make big plays. We need to do a good job of tackling in space,” Pierce said. “We need to limit their possessions and we need to score touchdowns when we get in the red zone. Field goals aren’t going to win this. We’re going to have to put up some points.”

Bruich expects Carter to give his team a battle in the trentches. “They’re a very tough group of kids,” he said. “They’re big and physical.”

Zamore Zigler of Carter High picks San Jose State

Carter High senior Zamore Zigler seen above from an interview during his junior year after returning a punt for a touchdown, has committed to play football at San Jose State, coach Alex Pierce reports.

Pierce said Zigler has not yet made his trip to San Jose State.

Zigler, recruited as a running back, has only 47 yards rushing for Carter this season. But he has been explosive once again as a returner, returning four kicks (three punts and one kickoff) for touchdowns this season. He also has an interception and six pass deflections as a defensive back

Last year, he had five touchdowns on returns, including one against Colton, about which he is talking in the interview.

Further thoughts on Eisenhower beating Carter 28-7

With my computer crashing twice on deadline on Friday night, I wasn’t able to get everything all the details into my story about Eisenhower’s 28-7 win over Carter.

So, I thought I’d share some of them, as well as my observations.

The win enabled Ike to win the city of Rialto championship trophy for the first time in five years. Since its inception in 2005 (?), Carter has won it every year except 2008 and 2013, when Ike won it. Rialto has never won it.

I didn’t mention Carter suffered two key injuries early in the game. right tackle Lynell Smith (ankle) and wide receiver/safety Tamas Stewart (collarbone) both left in the first quarter and did not return. The severity of their injuries is not known, but Smith was eventually able to walk to the locker room and Stewart did not need to be taken off on a stretcher.

Prep football: A look San Bernardino County’s early nonleague matchups

The 2013 prep football season will soon be upon us, with Week 0 games taking place in four weeks.

Although we are still in the preliminary stages of previews, I thought I’d take a look at some interesting storylines for matchups between San Bernardino County teams from Week 0 and Week 1:

  • Aug. 30 Rancho Cucamonga at Redlands: Redlands always plays a challenging local nonleague schedule, and this matchup off this year’s schedule. Both teams went to at least the second round in the Inland Division playoffs last year.
  • Aug. 30 Barstow at Adelanto: A first varsity game is always a big deal, and the Saints get to host in their first varsity tilt.
  • Aug. 30 Citrus Valley at San Gorgonio: A year ago, Citrus Valley was a favorite to win the East Valley Division title, but was derailed by San Gorgonio in its first game, and never fully recovered. Citrus Valley will look for revenge, but San G. is good.
  • Aug. 30 Eisenhower vs. Alta Loma at Chaffey HS: A year ago, a 54-0 Eisenhower win in this game showed it was a new era for the Eagles. But with coach Vinny Fazio’s departure after 1 year for Murrieta Valley, there are questions again about Ike and new head coach Mike Clark.
  • Sept. 5 Summit vs. Redlands East Valley at Citrus Valley HS: REV plays the most challenging nonleague schedule around, and this game is the only nonleague game for the Wildcats against a San Bernardino County team. It just happens to be against a Summit team that was 9-1 before losing in the first round of the playoffs.
  • Sept. 6 Carter at Redlands: A year ago, Carter went 12-1, but had only one nonleague opponent, Eisenhower, that finished with a winning record. This time, they add another former Citrus Belt League rival, Redlands.
  • Sept. 6 Indian Springs at Grand Terrace: A year ago, Grand Terrace was the host in its first-ever varsity game, a loss to Riverside Notre Dame in front of a large and vocal crowd. This time, the Titans get to host an Indian Springs team playing its first varsity game. The two coaches, Indian Springs’ Dave DeWoody and Grand Terrace’s Harold Strauss go back to their 8-man football days, when DeWoody was at Riverside Christian and Strauss was at Bloomington Christian.
  • Sept. 6 Apple Valley at Kaiser: Kaiser surprised some by winning a CIF title and this is its first game in its title defense. Apple Valley felt it got a raw deal in a playoff bid last year.

Redlands East Valley beats Yucaipa on squeeze at County Clash

Redlands East Valley’s Ryan England drives in the winning run on this play, a squeeze bunt with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 4-3 victory over Yucaipa at the County Clash on Saturday at San Manuel Stadium.

It was one of several key bunts on the day for the first County Clash of the year. But more on that later.

A glance at the 17 San Bernardino County wrestlers competing at state Friday

Here is a glance at the 17 San Bernardino County wrestlers competing at state. Rankings are from TheCaliforniaWrestler.com. I will be reporting live from Bakersfield at the State Championships. I will have updates on this blog, and also on twitter.com/PeteMarshallLaw

Toughest draw: Matt Williams, Sultana (182) and Kenny Clark, Carter (285).
Williams, ranked No. 7 has an easy first-round match, but then would face the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the second round and likely the No. 8 wrestler in the third round just to get to the quarterfinals. That’s a loaded section. Clark, also ranked No. 7, should have an easy second round match, but would face No. 1 Nick Nevills of Clovis in the third round.

Best first match: Corey Griego, Sultana (170)
Someone was going to be unhappy when Griego defaulted and took 6th at CIF-SS Masters. That person is Jonathon Costa of Escalon. Costa, ranked 10th, will face No. 1-ranked Griego.

Best chance to place for someone ranked outside of top 8: Garrick Gurney, Chino Hills (170).
Gurney, ranked 13th, doesn’t have to face anyone higher than No. 12 en route to the quarterfinals.
