July 2008 Archives
The Ducks extended Randy Carlyle's contract two years today, keeping him behind the bench in Anaheim until the 2010-11 season. More to come ... stay tuned.

Just got off the phone with Scott Niedermayer's agent and it turns out a report in the New York Post Tuesday was true: The Ducks will repay all the money Scott Niedermayer lost while sitting out training camp in 2007.
Ducks VP of hockey operations Bob Murray confirmed a report on the Frolunda Indians' website that Joe DiPenta has signed with the Swedish Elite League team.
DiPenta appeared in 23 games as the Ducks' seventh defenseman, notching four assists, and scoring one goal in the final week of the season. He was known for a standout attitude despite mediocre skill, as well as yielding one of fewer than 20 wooden sticks in the NHL.
FYI: The Indians are coached by former Ducks nemesis (Stars, Sharks) Ulf Dahlen.
From the Detroit Free Press:
... Let me hear you all say "ewwwwwww!"
Red Wings forward Kris Draper revealed during the weekend that his diaperless baby, Kamryn, did a number on the Cup last month. A number two, to be exact.
"A week after we won it, I had my newborn daughter in there, and she pooped in the Cup," Draper said. "That was something. We had a pretty good laugh.
"I still drank out of it that night, so no worries."
... by Edmonton Oilers GM Kevin Lowe:
Ducks GM Brian Burke has asked the NHL to investigate this very question. More in tomorrow's papers.

Continuing his trend of signing former Canucks, GM Brian Burke today signed 5-11, 185-pound center Brendan Morrison away from Vancouver. He's 33, he's coming off a down year statistically, and he fits the Andy McDonald mold that the Ducks were missing in the second half of last season.
Details forthcoming.
With all this (legitimate) talk of Brian Burke dangling draft picks as trade bait, and all this other (slightly less legitimate) talk of Logan MacMillan being candidate No. 1, I thought I'd take the issue straight to the Ducks' 2007 first-round draft pick, who was in Anaheim for rookie conditioning on Tuesday.

Yesterday afternoon during rookie conditioning, I caught up with David McNab on the Ducks' salary-cap space ... and remember, this is the guy who looks at all the team's books and reports to the NHL.

Asked about the ripple effect of the Oilers' offer sheets for Dustin Penner and Thomas Vanek, Brian Burke pulled no punches during a conference call Tuesday morning:
"Everything I said a year ago has come true. Every single word. ... Both (general) managers don't like starting fights with other (general) managers. I stand by everything I said a year ago and everything I predicted has come true. Thanks to the Edmonton Oilers, the second contract has disappeared in the NHL. They go right from the entry system into what used to be the third contract, thanks to two offer sheets from Kevin Lowe."

The deal was done about half an hour after the free-agency period began: Five years, $26.625 million. Details forthcoming.

J.P. Hoornstra has been covering the Anaheim Ducks since 2007. Eight months after the University of Wisconsin won its third NCAA hockey championship, he was born in a frigid Madison winter. He betrayed his blue-blooded beginnings by graduating from UCLA in 2003, and welcomes any and all dialogue on the finer points of hockey.
