Murray on Gauthier’s turnover

“It’s the kind you’d like to have back and do over again for sure,” Terry Murray said. “It’s one of those things that happened in the game. You’re trying to do the right thing on the breakout and find the center iceman, but it was a mistake. Unfortunately, it ended up being a goal that gave them all kinds of life to get back into it.”

They weren’t kidding when they said Terry Murray’s a patient coach.

Wow, is Detoit good and it showed.
But we got a point of of the game. And this was a good test for the young kings. Kopitar is to predictable out there. He needs to simplify his game. Also Detroit mae sure Kopi did not have much room out there on the ice. But all in all It was not a bad game.

Could you ask Murray if Gauthier is going to be benched for this turnover like Preissing was for his? If not, why? I’d love to hear the reasoning on that one.

  • Anonymous

Gauthier is a goat. 3 Wings covering the middle and he tries to go for the pinpoint pass with a predictable result.

  • Uno

Why is Gauthier out there with 2 minutes to play? The guy is a -7. He doesn’t belong out there in a close game. I think Murray is just experimenting around (based on the line combos and Gauthier’s presence). He even put him back out there for his next shift. I’d rather see a little urgency to win.

  • Ed

I would like the Kings not to sit on a 1 goal lead in the 3rd period by dumping the puck when reaching the redline. By giving the puck to the other team, it allows them to attack more, and that puts so much more stress on your defense. Mistake will sure to happen.

I much rather we just play like we did the first 2 periods. Giving up 16 shots in the first 2 periods, don’t sit back and play prevent and give up another 16 shots, you are just asking for trouble.

  • cristobal

    Gauthier is fine.
The wings never looked like running away with the game.

  • Mel

Frustrating loss. I mean, we can all agree that we liked the effort from the Kings. But these 2 points were easily ours. Instead, the Red Wings stole these two points, and the Kings ended up with 1. Unbelievable.

Even rookies know not to play the puck up the middle of the ice. It’s what you are supposed to learn when you are playing competitive hockey.

I am still in shock. The whole time as I was driving home, and right now… as I’m typing this.

  • mstar85

All I can see is this is going to be a tough team to beat towards the middle of the season and especially the end of the season. Payoff time

  • deadcatbounce

This is why Denis Gauthier has been a minoe leaguer for virtually all of his professional career.

Hockey 101……. take the puck up the boards!!!!!Not the center of the ice with a few ticks on the clock. My little girl knows this.

  • Aloysius

My hat off to Barbs for putting up a good game. I wish he could play like that more consistently

  • CBGB

Can we claim Ken Klee – He’s horrible, but he’d never pass the puck to the middle of the ice where TWO Red Wings players were.

THAT was a rookie mistake made by a veteran and he SHOULD be benched for that.

You’re wrong. There weren’t “3 Wings covering the middle …” in fact, I watched closely frame-by-frame on replay, and DG briefly looked up the boards first only to see his left winger pretty well covered but 2 Wings. The middle lane appeared that much more open, except that Filppula made a great read/anticipation move and broke to his left. He ended up being correct and stole the pass. Tough play that happened in a micro-second, and looked much “worse” than it was.

I actually like Gauthier, and if it weren’t the Wings this wouldn’t sting quite as much.

  • NMKingsFan

I think Preissing was benched because of lack of effort, Gauthier just made a bone head play but he does hustle. Gauthier is definitely not the best defenceman, but he’s what we have now, a bridge player if you will. The Ducks are also having trouble with their 5th and 6th defencemen, they dumped Klee and picked up Hedican who was headed for retirement. Not every team can dress 6 quality defencemen.
On the plus side, did anybody see that Osgood said that Detroit played their best game last night? If you would have told me before the game that Detroit would play their best game and the Kings would get a point out of it, I would be happy.
The Kings are fun to watch this year. Except for those gaffs with under 2 minutes to play, but it’s better than being a Ducks fan.

  • Sticks

Junior should not be out there. There is a reason in played all of last year on the Phantoms (AHL). A 7 year old knows not to make that play. Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards! Never throw the puck up the middle. go up the boards!

Junior should have to write this on the Kings blackboard!

  • Mark

This coach has made this early season worth watching. Last year Crawford would have been up in arms blaming everyone else in the world but this coach is displaying real coaching abilities by not throwing his team under the bus for a couple of hicups. Granted the team needs to stop with the bad giveaways but it’s early in the season and this new team is jelling together pretty nicely.

  • mark4kings

Anybody notice that Drew Doughty is a Plus-7? 2nd in the league. He had another great game last night.

  • Anonymous

Any good Midget defensemen knows to flip it up high and get it out to center ice. Gauthier had the time to do it that way but he made a different decision that ended up costing them the game. He just blew it.

  • Atraya

Gauthier’s turnover wasn’t anywhere near as bad as Corvo’s turnover to the Wings a couple of seasons ago.

  • Steve Yzerman

4 out of the 5 losses this season, all by ONE goal. Point being, this team is competing and nobody is blowing them out of games…damn good sign, they’re only gonna get better.

When is the last time the Kings beat Detroit?

  • Jonny

Watch the replay… LaBarbera should have never played that puck to Gauthier. He should have left it for his D. He isn’t Turco. There were two red wings on the boards when Gauthier had it. he was trapped. Then Fillipula or who ever scored jumped off the wall in anticipation of the pass at the last second. I guess the only play that he had, was to pass it behind his net.

  • -J

“This is why Denis Gauthier has been a minoe leaguer for virtually all of his professional career”- Oh, really… NHL games 497, AHL games 242. With the exception of last year when he got caught in cap issues, all of his time in the AHL was spent the first couple of years after he jumped from juniors. Maybe you should get your facts straight before you pass judgement.

Dude made a mistake. Get over it people.

    Observations:

Talked with an Detroit asst coach after the game and he said they had to play way harder than expected. He was very impressed with the improvement of our “D”, and thought Drew Doughty was amazing and was reluctant to say it was a bad decision to let Quincey go….o well.

If we had just 10 more shots on goal…(and not so many turnovers, and win a few more face offs) that would’ve been our game.

Kopi and Brown…just need to find their game…Kopi is an exceptional player. Not sure what is happening there.

Overall…pretty solid game…just would have liked to see more offense.

  • chefp96

If Drew Doughty keeps up the good play he will win the Calder Trophey

It was last year, Kings won 5-3 on February 7th…..

I was actually sitting near the Gauthier family (I find this out after his turnover)..and when I directed the explatives toward him, his Mom comes towards me a tells me off. I am a guy usually sits in the 200 section, and the one time I splurge a bit to sit the 100s, this happens.

  • nykingfan

    Good for his mom.
Did you feel a little foolish when you were being berated by a woman in front of 17,000 fans?

Good lesson for fans…you never know who you are sitting next to…never make it personal towards a player. You’re lucky it was just his mother….

  • cristobal

Anonymous – man up and sign your post. haha. that story is very funny. Did she have a french accent?
Also funny was the intermission segment on Jack Johnson. She explains what JMFJ means by humming and hawing once, and then just letting fly with the MF part which was of course bleeped. I thought it was pretty funny. I bet she was fun to party with.

Every defenseman on the planet knows not to make that pass. Every defenseman on the planet knows to make the play up the boards. Yet, everyone, at some point, has made that pass and gotten burned. I was a defenseman as a kid. I played somewhere around 600-700 games at AA from age 7 to 18. I can still remember the three times I did exactly what Gauthier did. You think, “sure, I know what I’m supposed to do, but the rules don’t apply to me, do they?” Or, you think, “I always make the safe play, it will be okay this once.” You even can feel the mistake happening as you’re making it, before the pass leaves your stick. Then, when the mistake you could feel happening actually happens, you think, “why didn’t I listen to myself?” Well, next time, you do. Gauthier will. It’s the defenseman’s version of a goalie’s “soft goal,” the mistake from which there is no recovery. And Terry Murray and Mark Hardy, both defenseman, I guarantee you have both made that horrible pass and will both be talking to Gauthier about it.

  • cristobal

Sorry, by “She” I meant Jack’s mother.

  • john

One of the most apparent things of last nights game was that nearly everyone on the Kings was COMPLETELY exhausted about half way through the third and into the final minutes of the game,

not sure what we can conclude from that, just thought I’d throw it out there.
