Mother fatally struck by pickup truck while crossing street with children in Montebello

MONTEBELLO >> A woman died Wednesday after she was struck by a pickup truck while crossing Garfield Avenue in Montebello with her children late Wednesday, officials said.
The two children, ages 5 and 9, were hospitalized with injuries not initially believed to be life threatening, Montebello police Lt. Michael Bergman said.
The collision took place just after 8:20 p.m. in the 400 block of North Garfield Avenue, just north of Madison Avenue, the lieutenant said.
The woman and children were crossing the street mid-block when they were struck, Bergman said. They were not within a crosswalk.
Officials took the woman and two children to a hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries a short time later, Bergman said. An update on the children’s conditions was not available.
The driver of the pickup truck remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators, Bergman said. There were no obvious signs of a crime at the scene, however the investigation remained in its early stages.
