Pac-12 reprimands UCLA’s Deon Hollins for complaints about refs

The Pac-12 has reprimanded UCLA linebacker Deon Hollins for what it described as “derogatory comments” about the conference’s officiating.

Hollins said on Tuesday that referees had missed numerous holding calls during the Bruins’ 31-27 loss to Washington State this past weekend, and joked about possibly sending officials a gift basket.

“It’s really tough sometimes beating the referees and beating the other team,” he said then. “It’s really tough sometimes. We were just looking at it on film. There were so many missed things. I was appalled.”

That was enough to prompt an official response from the conference.

“All of our student-athletes must adhere to the Pac-12’s Standards of Conduct,” Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. “Mr. Hollins remarks were a clear violation of the Pac-12 comprehensive restrictions on public comments on officiating and he is being appropriately reprimanded.”

“There is a great deal of responsibility that comes with being a football student-athlete in the Pac-12 and at UCLA,” Hollins said in a statement. “Unfortunately, yesterday I spoke out of frustration and knew almost immediately afterwards that my comments were inappropriate. I expect more of myself and will not let this happen again.”

Truth hurts, apparently. About time someone called out the conference on the incompetence of their officials.

    Blasphemy!
A student athlete speaking his mind!
    Off with his head!
Everyone in the Pac 12 and the rest of the country know Pac 12 officiating is a joke. Hey Pac 12, why don’t you watch some film and see if he was right or not?
Watch for the retaliation from these bozo refs.

They missed 3 review calls too

The pac 12 has the worst officiating in all of college football! Those nfl replacement refs could do a better job.

    • INawe

I don’t know about that. You know those NFL replacement refs where from the PAC10/12.

I’ve e-mailed the pac-12 regarding the review refs numerous times. No response. They obviously are disconnected from reality. Atrocious & appalling Deon! I got your back on this. Speak your mind & let them suspend you all you’ll be missing is a hose job anyway

So what happens to him? Does he get his meal card taken away? They should be reprimanding the refs who get paid to do what they do! Take some of their paychecks away!

What about the standards of conduct for referees? Besides reprimanding Deon, the Pac-12 Commissioner should also have said they would review the performance of the refs and do something about it.

Right, that will be the day.

    Jack,
What is the name of the official working the WSU game that is watching for holding ?
    Anyone have that name?

You don’t suppose that Larry Scott is mad because Mora said publicly that Thursday Night games were a very bad idea, do you?
Then, the day after Deon criticizes officiating, a Pac 12 official says Wadood should have been called for targeting.

      Goodman

Seriously, F Larry Scott and F the P12 refs.

Does anyone really believe that Hollins actually WROTE that statement himself?

    • 88 Straight

He probably did. He is a bright kid. He has given several interviews throughout the year and has always represented himself well and is thoughtful. I still think he would have been better served not speaking out on this one, although he is telling the truth.

Another self inflicted wound, courtesy of social media……

The non-calls were egregious. It just isn’t a good look. I don’t know if you saw the one picture of the guy that should have drawn two flags on one play for both holding and hands to the face. He basically had him in a head lock and no call. EVERYONE knows the PAC-12 refs suck. It just isn’t the best way to handle things.

    What is the ref’s name?
