UCLA fires head coach Jim Mora

One day after UCLA lost its third straight rivalry game to USC, the school announced that it has fired head coach Jim Mora. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch will take over as interim head coach as the Bruins finish the regular season on Friday, Nov. 24 with a chance to clinch bowl eligibility at home against California.

“Making a coaching change is never easy, but it’s an especially difficult decision when you know that a coach has given his all to our University,” athletic director Dan Guerrero said in a statement. “Jim helped reestablish our football program, and was instrumental in so many ways in moving the program forward. While his first four seasons at UCLA were very successful, the past two seasons have not met expectations. We thank Jim and his family for his service to our school and his unquestionable commitment to our student-athletes.”

Mora is due a buyout worth more than $12 million. UCLA said the terms will be honored and covered by department-generated funds.

Mora started his career with the most wins in his first three seasons for any UCLA head coach, but went just 17-19 since the beginning of 2015. The Bruins went 4-8 last season.

said to be a move to stop Chip Kelly from going to Univ of Fla

    • Richard

Kelly would team well w our new highly ranked dual threat QB DTR a la Mariotta. Seems Fisch will go in that event

      • EncinitasBruin

Was thinking the same thing. DTR is lighting it up for Bishop Gorman. Also, this gives the new HC time to work with DTR to shore up the recruiting class before signing day.

        • Richard

Fisch has been named interim HC. Has two games to prove himself vs signing Kelly now. However, it is being reported by ESPN that Kelly wants to go to a school w/ no entrance requirements

          • gotroy22

            He’s going to ASU then.

        • Richard

Kelly has recruiting ties in Pac NW. In fact he could prob pick off a few recruits from Ore great recruiting class this year.
All the yrs w/ Ore. Philly & SF means he has access to a lot of good asst coaches.

  • Sandy Underpants

NOooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! That’s not fair. Bruins won in casinos last night. That’s a big demo. Also Coach Mora owned USC, Richard told me so.

    • JustOwns

      Mora was 3 & 3.

  • Luis Wuence

Had to happen. Attendance was down, and once you lose the fans the rest follows. Need to hire a big name to excite recruits and fans! Chip Kelly is the obvious choice but I think les miles would also be good.

    • Bruinsfan99

Les Miles would be good. But I think he would go the way of Mora within 5 years. Great first few years followed by let downs.

      • 88 Straight

No to Les. If UCLA can land Kelly, it would be huge albeit a bit of a longshot.

What may improve the odds is the deal with Under Armour. With Chip at UCLA, the marketing could go up big time and the recruiting in LA gets VERY interesting. Chip Kelly ir Clay Helton? Hmmm

        • JustOwns

Not so sure Kelly is the right fit. Kelly’s teams were Pac -12 slick but never tough enough to win the BCS final or NC.

          • 88 Straight

The lost by a FG to Auburn. Chip gets us top recruits, builds excitement and puts fans into seats. I still think it’s unlikely that Dan can pull this off. The wild card is Under Armour.

          • JustOwns

I still prefer Stanford’s balanced grind it out offense and stout defense, to Kelly’s razzle-dazzle offense.

          • 88 Straight

You just criticized Oregon for not winning with its style but Stanford has never made the playoffs. Both styles require defense to be played. Kelly immediately improves recruiting as well.

          • JustOwns

Point taken, but Mora is 3 -3 vs bozo u and 0 – 8 vs Stanford.

            Additionally 88, Stanford is 3 – 0 in Pac -12 Championship games and UCLA 0 – 2.

It’s simple 88, Stanford always plays competitive, tough FB.

I’d like to see UCLA win a NC, but I rather UCLA play competitive week in and week out and win 8, 9 games year.

Jim “Bandwagon” Hill just said his sources have UCLA focused 2 candidates: Chip Kelly and Kevin Sumlin.

          • gotroy22

The PC pick is Sumlin, maybe he can bring back Karl Dorrell as your new OC! LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

          • JustOwns

            KD: 13
            Little Petey Pom-Pom: 9.

Hey 22, when does the sham McNair case/trial begin. Can’t wait for the circus.

          • 88 Straight

Hopefully not Sumlin. I’d rather hire Fisch than him. The guy at Memphis is good. Hire the guy that beat us, not the guy we beat because they couldn’t control the clock.

          • gotroy22

Come on Sumlin is perfect for you SJWs.

          • 88 Straight

Is SJW some Alabama child molester slang?

          • Bruinsfan99

Sumlin would be an okay hire. But I agree, may as well give Fisch a shot if we cannot get Chip or Norvell

          • Richard

Wild card indeed as it has been rumored for some time now that UA is in serious financial difficulties…altho it could survive for years in that condition probably ?!

          • Pete

What’s the difference? When was the last time the Ruins had a football HC that was tough enough to win any football championship title. Back in the fifties? Should’ve kept Dorrell….Fight On!

          • gotroy22

Look at Owns aka lavar Ball dreaming of NCs with his team in the Pac 12 South cellar. Try winning a Rose Bowl before thinking about the playoffs.

    • grave soul

You took a lot of the words out of what I was about to write. Agreed, except that I’m Not so sure that Miles would be a good fit in a market as big and different as L.A. is. Kelly would fit in well.

      • gotroy22

Hey there’s gray stool the Sore Loserman! You’ve had a bad year.

    • Richard

Bleacher Report now saying that UCLA is indeed, targeting Kelly.

      • cmwilliamsd

The biggest problem is Dan Guerrero. He is now picking his 4 head football coach. Why would anyone assume he would make the right choice. He has already proved he is incompetent. Time to clean house. Show him the door

    • gotroy22

When Guerrero ran off the alumni cheerleader and tripled season ticket prices you destroyed your fan base. It will take years to replace them. You need an instant winner like Kelly. He would do wonders with your QB recruit coming in.

      • Luis Wuence

I couldn’t agree more with the alumni cheerleader part… Jeff had a way about him that just fired everyone up, the moment he left you could notice his absence. Even after all these years I’ll still remember his “every man, women and child” line.

      • Guerrero ran off the alumni cheerleader

        Terrible betrayal.

    • Sandy Underpants

I heard something similar, and I also have a friend who lives next to a guy who told me that his gardener was contacted by UCLA about the HC opening, and that gardener’s name is Karl Dorrell.

      • JustOwns

What local ghetto Univ. with FB delusions of grandeur had five (5) HFBC’s in three years.

The same third rate institution claimed it’s mediocre FB team would go 12 – 0, win the P-12 championship, and then win the NCAA NC in 2017.

And the bush league Univ. further claimed, the Piglet would win the Heisman!!!!!!

        Stanford 31 – SUCC 7.

        • Sandy Underpants

Was that the team that beat you last night? Better to have great expectations than to only care about beating 1 opponent every season, and usually losing to that team.

          • JustOwns

bozo u is no M. Ali.

“Great expectations,” you mean delusions of grandeur. It’s been my experience that loud mouth expectations mask fear.

    • EncinitasBruin

It would be ironic if that high school trick punt ends up landing Chip Kelly at UCLA, a coach who owned SC at Oregon.

      • FightOn!

        Bitter…bitter…

        • 88 Straight

Nothing bitter in EB’s post. SC won the game. UCLA fell for a high school play. Dumb on UCLA’s part. If Chip does come to UCLA, it changes things. I don’t see a lot of Clay Helton fans on your site.

          • EncinitasBruin

Dam* straight. Mora rebuilt pride in the program including the kind of facilities that are indispensable for luring elite guys like our future star QB DTR. I liked Mora, but it is time for a change. I’m excited for the future.

          • JustOwns

How do you explain 5 UCLA recruit decommits in the last 2 weeks.

          • EncinitasBruin

When you have great talent but go 9-14over a 14-month stretch, recruits notice. Of course it hurts to lose 5 recruits, but I liked DTR’s response: as mostly 3-star guys, it gives UCLA the chance to land more elite guys. Of course, everything now hinges on not muffing the new HC hire.

          • Paul

BFD – all were 3* guys who would not have made an impact for years.

      • Sandy Underpants

Yep, even UCLA owned USC at that time because the NCAA fraudulently sanctioned the Trojan program to death. Maybe that’s how UCLA got Mora.

        • JustOwns

Of course bozo u didn’t get caught cheating!

When’s the McNair trial starting. Can’t wait for that circus.

      • Richard

sc didn’t play Oregon in two of Marioitta’s years there. Another gift to them from Larry Scott

  • Arturo

UCLA outplayed USC last night everywhere except maybe RB and LB and special teams. UCLA always has talent and if you guys can get your hands on Chip Kelly, look out.

I am a lifelong SC fan but don’t wish any ill will on the Bruins. Your team played well last night, no need to hang your heads.

    • JustOwns

I don’t hate Mora, I just dislike his coaching style. It’s clear I’m not the only that thinks the way.

Jaime, you have a great big mouth, how about sharing your preferred candidate to assume the UCLA HFBC crown. .

  • Lifelong Bruin Fan

I tip my hat to Coach Mora. Although he did not accomplish what he set out to achieve, he changed the culture at UCLA and laid the groundwork for future success. I assume it was loyalty to his coaches that led him to promote one to defensive coordinator and another to offensive coordinator, despite neither having any prior experience. Unfortunately, the results spoke for themselves, and I believe this hastened Mora’s downfall, especially given the expectations with our considerable talent and momentum in those years.

Thank you Coach Mora for all of your hard work, and best of luck to you moving forward.

    • jameskatt

Mora partially changed the football culture at UCLA. At least they aren’t ditching practice by climbing the fence.
But Mora could not ultimately beat the waves of spoiled-attitude laziness and ineptitude that is UCLA Football Player Culture. And it pushed back at Mora and reared its ugly head the past two years.
There is something about the nearby beaches, Hollywood stars, candy store play land of Westwood and gorgeous coeds and stars that numbs big brain of every UCLA football player and lowers their football IQ and will to win.
Every coach over the past 20 years at UCLA has lost this fight. Only Terry Donahue beat it over a 20 year career – though UCLA’s losing culture ultimately also did him in.
This losing culture was evident in the blown play that gifted USC with their first touchdown. That was an unbelievably stunningly stupid play on National TV. That play got Mora fired.

      • Richard

        Disagree.
Mora won that game last night. Refs screwed us like never ever seen before.
        Also disagree re location etc.
Biggest downfall for UCLA FB has always been the inability to consistently recruit top !!!! OL.
sc always gets top 5 OL who go 1st and 2nd Round.
        We get 3 stars mainly

        • Paul

No excuse. SC has always gotten the calls against us…remember the facemask that wasn’t called on Rodney Peete’s TD saving tackle? Or Affholter’s hot potato TD catch?

          • Richard

U forgot the BS PI call on Danny Graham, phantom TDs by Dickerson & Alfhoulter etc etc
Maybe ur too young to remember those but they were all game deciding TOTAL BS calls.
But last night was the worst. They took away every big play we had w/ BS !!! There was no clip on our TD run. He (Toran??) blocked the guy on his hip not on his back.
            Paid skum

      • gotroy22

Like when Mattingly did the shift with the runner on second against the Mets?

      • Hogsman

I blame that kickoff return for a TD on the special teams coach. Special teams have been horrible the past two years, and it’s time to hire someone with experience instead of pawning it off on an assistant coach with little or no experience with special teams. Whenever Matthew Slater retires from the NFL, UCLA should hire him to coach special teams.

    • EncinitasBruin

I wish him the best. Divorce is terrible and it had to have affected his focus and his season. Good luck, Coach Mora, and thank you for placing UCLA in a position to become a CFP program (facilities, attitude, recruiting).

      • jameskatt

Certainly all that stress made his gut grow huge.
He doesn’t like like the younger version of Mora the first 4 years.

What change of culture? He came after you ruins lost to USC for the 5th straight year and he left losing to USC for the 3rd straight year. He established losing to Stanford as your latest tradition.

    • cmwilliamsd

Without Mora the new football facility would never have been built. That will pay dividends for years to come. Mora biggest mistake was hiring Bradley. I thought that was a huge hire at the time. Turned out the game has passed Bradley by. Also injuries the last two years have been devastating. As for Chip coming to UCLA? Not unless the pay him what he’s looking for, 9 million a year. My question? How does this AD still have a job. He is on his fourth coach hire. Clean house let Dan go.

      • 92104bruinfan

Dan is apparently all set to retire by 2019 and he was apparently REALLY not wanting to make a coaching change before then but Under Armour and several high level donors weren’t going to wait that long. I don’t hate or dislike Guerrero but what the Regents and Chancellor want are somewhat different than what a lot of Bruin alums and fans would like to see. Go Bruins!

  • jameskatt

    WOW.
UCLA BIT THE BULLET and will pay Mora $12 Million plus pay the new head coach another large contract. I’m expecting an additional at least $7 million (Jim Harbaugh) to $11 million (Nick Saban) per year.
Chip Kelly would cost UCLA AT LEAST $7 million a year – $42 MILLION over 6 guaranteed years. So the total will be $56 MILLION to change head coaches.
Unfortunately, Mora has run his course and hit his ceiling. So UCLA is forced to spend public funds on a new head coach if it wants the football program to flourish.
Jedd Fisch is a great alternative if UCLA wants to save money. But can he take us to GLORY? I think not – yet by several years.

    • Richard

There is NEVER any public funds used on athletics.
In fact, it is reported that public funds pay only c. 5% of the school’s budget. UCLA is financially self sustaining w/o public $ !!!

    • cmwilliamsd

      Not if he keeps Bradley

  • UCLA Dynasty

Chip Kelly ain’t coming, let’s not kid ourselves. We’ll never win a bidding war against Florida, Tennessee or A&M. The AD is cheap.

    • 88 Straight

Most likely that is true. However, none of us know how involved Under Armour may be. Plus, Kelly is still being paid big $$ by the 49ers.

      • UCLA Dynasty

The owner of Under Armor is a huge Maryland alum. How’s their coaching situation working out?

        • 88 Straight

UCLA has a far bigger upside in the PAC than Maryland in the Big10. Kelly has recruiting ties in the West and his agent is a Bruin alum. Why pull the trigger on Mora now unless you like your chances? Originally, I thought this was a pipe dream. Now, it’s still a bit if a long shot, but there’s a shot.

          • EncinitasBruin

My biggest concern is whether or not Kelly will be turned off by UCLA’s tough entrance requirements. Thoughts? Also, i like the fact that Aikman and Wasserman are on the search team…

      • jameskatt

The 49ers are giving Chip Kelly ONLY $6 million a year.
Nick Saban makes $11 million a year.
Jim Harbaugh makes $7 million a year.
UCLA can afford to give Chip Kelly $11 Million a year.

        • cmwilliamsd

          He’s looking for 9

      • Richard

I think we can get plenty close to those other schools re the money, enough so that, that wouldn’t be the determinative issue but ESPN is reporting that Kelly wants to go to a school w no entrance requirements

      • Pudly76

You figure out the prodigal son thing yet?

        • 88 Straight

Not sure what you are referring to. Obviously i know the story, but not your current question.

    • EncinitasBruin

The major missing piece for UCLA’s inability to lure an elite Power 5 coach in the past was not money, but facilities. That problem is now solved. We are in prime position now for a Kelly-level coach.

      • UCLA Dynasty

Here’s a name to watch that is far more likely than Kelly. Mike Norvell.

        • Pudly76

According to Jim Hill, he said the #2 name after Chip was Kevin Sumlin and, btw espn just confirmed it

      • JustOwns

        Name some candidates.

    • jameskatt

If UCLA is willing to fork over $12 million for Mora, they should be ready to pay $11 MILLION (Nick Saban Money) for Chip Kelly with a long contract – say 7-8 years.
      BITE THE BULLET UCLA.

      • Sandy Underpants

Yeah, that’s brilliant…. but the 12 million Mora is receiving covers the next 4 seasons he’s under contract to coach, which equals 3 million per year. Aside from Kelly not being worth 11 million, we aren’t paying more than 3 for anyone that would actually take this job.

  • jameskatt

Chip Kelly for $12 MILLION a year to make him the highest paid coach in college football will do the trick.

    • gotroy22

LOL the ruin cheapskates will never spring for a real coach, they let 32 year old Terry Donahue learn on the job for 5 years because he was a bargain.

      • Richard

        U lose!
We signed the coach u sent ppl to Philly to sign instead of Helton..and he turned u down.

  • Pete

    Why? Why? Why?…….Fight On!

  • Paul

    Change was needed.

But it could have waited until Monday morning. Mora is not Lane Kiffin and we’re not USC.

    • Pete

That’s right Paul. And the Ruins never will be…..Fight On!

      • Paul

True. We’ll never be the classless embarrassment that exists across town.

        Troll on!

        • gotroy22

Yet you fired your coach on his birthday, how is that classy?

          • Pudly76

They did pay $12,000,000 on his bday!

          • Paul

It was the night b4 his birthday. And I think it should have happened Monday morning.

    • gotroy22

If only you were SC, you’d have 11 NCs.

    • Sandy Underpants

Yeah we aren’t SC. UCLA’s head coach gets fired after the USC game every few years. That’s how I know.

  • gotroy22

    They will go cheap.

    • cmwilliamsd

Seems like just a few weeks ago Trojan fans were crying for a Kelly hire. Crying fans even spotted Kelly and Swan out for lunch. It was a few weeks ago. After SC was taken apart at South Bend. Kelly is going to Florida. He wants 9 million a year. Not happening in Westwood.

  • gotroy22

No the AP didn’t vacate anything…. but they did take back the Heisman.

    • JustOwns

The AP didn’t; the NCAA did.

      Stanford 31 – bozos 7

  • cmwilliamsd

    I heard Lane Kiffin…lol

    • jameskatt

A MATURE Lane Kiffin is a fantastic coach. The key is MATURE.
He always gets the most out of his players.
The same can’t be said of Mora and others.

  • Pudly76

You claimed the pac12 south after getting beat 50-0 by the real south champs. Guess that’s different.

    • EncinitasBruin

Well, when you cheat, you get punished.

      • Pudly76

We’ll see as the trial moves forward against the ncaa and then we’ll talk again. It was the kid’s family who got the money, from an agent, and the school had nothing to do with it. As will be shown in the trial and discovery.

  • Coach Thom

Andy, your kindergarten humor needs to be shoved up your…

  • Hardtail Bruin

Respectfully Ms. Nguyen, why is there more activity on Wolf’s SC blog regarding UCLA’s coaching situation and possible replacements than on your UCLA blog?

  • Tyler Durden

Regardless of who is picked as coach it will be more appealing than playing for Helton. I look for clay to lose his job soon too.

  • Paul

Did SC have a TD incorrectly called back?
