Cody Kessler Makes Strong Showing At Manning Academy

CODY.HAWAII

USC quarterback Cody Kessler made it to the semifinals of the Manning Academy accuracy competition over the weekend. Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion won the competition.

The quarterbacks throw balls at moving golf carts and Kessler went 3 for 3 in the first round. Matt Barkley famously missed 2 of 3 carts at the Manning camp two years ago.

“That’s not really my thing, throwing at golf carts and stuff like that,” Barkley said. “I’d rather throw to a real receiver.”

  1. Well SUCCster’s, now that we know the K-man can hit a moving golf cart with a football, all is well in SUCCdum FB land. Does this mean Sark will switch D. Mama, who is human golf cart, to WR? SUCC fights on.

Why did you need to post this? ….and you wonder why no one respects you!

PS…. the National Enquirer is hiring

  4. Only eight QBs qualified by hitting all three targets, with most of the field struggling to hit the usually underthrown deep cart. Mannion, Bridge, Cody Kessler, Tennessee’s Justin Worley, Dartmouth’s Dalyn Williams, Colorado’s Sefu Liufau, Duke’s Anthony Boone and BYU’s Taysom Hill were the eight to advance to quarterfinal play. UCLA’s Brett Hundley embarrassingly failed to make the quarterfinals.

    • Are you saying you would rather have Kessler than Hundley? You might find that you are part of a very small group holding that opinion.

          • Kessler isn’t NFL material, so I don’t see him getting drafted, and I’m not 100% sold on Hundley either….he needs to work on his accuracy and not lock onto his primary receiver…..ask me after this season what I think of him………also, do you think that Hundley is better than Johnny Manziel, at this stage of his career?….at least he’s more humble than Johnny Football, which will work to his advantage……

      • I’m not saying anything, these are the facts reported by those in attendance at the academy. We al know Hundley can’t pass and looks to run first. Unfortunately for him that formula has been tried in the NFL and everyone has failed (can you say Tim Tebow). As long as Mora doesn’t put your receivers in golf carts, he stands a chance of completing a pass.

        • Hundley can’t pass? Have you seen the QB rankings? Hundley has been sacked more the past couple of years than almost anyone. He has needed to run. Granted, he is not close to a finished product, but he can throw the ball. This year he has to show he can win the big games.

Kessler is not yet in Hundley’s class. I would expect him to improve this year, but it will be his 1st year in a new system. Hitting golf carts isn’t the same as winning games.

        • Really? Does Jim Mora know that Hundley can’t pass? Have you consulted Sarkisian on that issue?

I don’t care for the silly comments from UCLA visitors. No need to join in, do you think?

          • Mr. 10… Opinions aren’t truth…they are merely opinions. Most intelligent people will back up their opinions with facts in order to justify their position/opinion. Since you stated that Kessler is a winner, one could imply that means Hundley is not. Last time I checked, Hundley and his team beat Kessler and his team 35-14. That sir, is the truth…not an opinion.

          • Probe, he posted a 10-4 record last year. That seems like a winner to me. I never said Hundley’s not a winner did I? I just don’t root for a bRuin ever. What youre not getting is that as a fan I take the good, the bad and everything in between. Cody is the QB and I’m not changing my opinion on that.

        • Suggest keeping your farm ownership papers in the safety deposit box…Not to be touched no mater how tempting the wager.

    • Hilary/Helen, has SUCC’s FB program fallen far down the rabbit hole that you need to announce gleefully, glowingly, that the K-man, SUCC’s starting QB, can hit a moving golf cart three straight times with a football. I’m embarrassed for you Hilary/Helen. I do have to admit though H/H, you do love and stick up for SUCC FB.

        • Helen…I think you may be a little too flowery in your flattery with the overused word “great”. Kessler did an admirable last year under difficult circumstances. It is hard to be too critical of the kid. However, Hundley is better than him at this point in time.

          • I said he did great, not that he was great. Kessler overachieved at the camp but his ceiling is too low to be an NFL QB. Nothing wrong with that.

    • So where did Kessler place among the final 8? What distance was he strong at, and what distance weaker?

Hundley has been criticized for accuracy. Hopefully FOR HIM, he takes it more seriously than did Barkley. For USC, that might not be be so great.

Supposedly, Bill Walsh was very critical and demanding of Joe Montana about ball placement, and worked him hard to get better.. I came to think that Kiffin set the bar too low for Barkley. I’d be curious to hear Barkley’s candid thoughts at this point.

    • Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion is the best NFL PRO ready QB in the nation..

Of course Hundley didn’t make it.. he shouldn’t have even gone to the camp and saved himself the embarrassment.

      • Agree. The Pac-12 has many really good college QBs, but Mannion is the best NFL-style QB. The NFL was briefly in love with the running QB, but realized they can’t stand up to the punishment from an NFL defense.

      • Yet he embarrassed us two years straight, BM. How did that possible happen?
You and Helen are a real football brain trust.

        • Who is “us”? the Daily News? USC has been embarrassed a lot in the last 3 years!

  5. “Darreus Rogers Awarded Jersey No. 1” …. We had better brace ourselves for the inevitable Kiffin reference by Scottie….. no way can he resist THIS opportunity…..

  8. Cody reminds me of Drew Brees, a little short in height, but long in football intelligence.
This will be a good year for Cody, and if he cuts down on his mistakes i.e. costly interceptions, it could be a very good year for the Trojans

  9. A quote like this:

“That’s not really my thing, throwing at golf carts and stuff like that,” Barkley said. “I’d rather throw to a real receiver.”

reeks of sour grapes – almost like his indifferent effort towards Max Wittek before that infamous Sun Bowl.

Barkley better start looking for a good year with the Eagles – Sanchez knows what a full NFL campaign requires. At least Kiffin is gone

  10. No question Cody is taking his role as USC qb and team leader more seriously than the last few guys. He holds the bar very high for himself. If he doesn’t have an absolutely banner year in 2014, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back for 2015.

  11. Not to worry. Our receivers are undergoing a change of their uniforms. Next season they will be giving the illusion of being golf carts.
Completion percentages for Kessler will go through the roof. This means that all of our WRs and TEs should be locks as 1st round draft picks.
Point of information – During ‘Can’t Hack-it’s’ tenure the HERD scraped up enough scratch to enable them to donate a golf cart to HH/Coach Orgeron for romping around campus/practice field. It can be used as a model for the uniform modification.
