Tight End Troubles

Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick

One might argue few positions are thinner for USC than tight end. With that in mind, there probably should have been a team of tutors surrounding Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick the past seven months. And let’s remember this quote from Pat Haden at Steve Sarkisian’s press conference on Dec. 2, 2013.

“He is committed to academic success,” Haden said.

Now maybe that didn’t apply to Cope-Fitzpatrick. Or maybe it shows Sarkisian is making Cope-Fitzpatrick accountable by not babying him. Bottom line, tight end is thin.

  1. right AGAIN, wolfman!!

you are already in MID-SEASON form, and Summer ball is just STARTING!!!

El Gran Lobo Mas Macho es 15-20 moves ahead of all the other beat writers!!!!

    #ChessMasterWolf

      • The wolfman goes there because the lines are shorter….but those idiots keep giving the wolfman the large fries!!!

Quite honestly, it’s starting to take a toll on the wolfman’s chiseled physique…

        • The Wolfman is part Pachyderm with all the peanuts he consumes while waiting for his charred mammal sandwich….

          • yeah, those peanuts are not helping…why can’t they open the Native Foods restaurant near campus to help the wolfman regain his prime physique??? he was a chiseled mass of steel before these idiots showed up with their giant fries order and free peanuts…

          • His once washboard abs are now more like a washing machine…. commercial size!

  2. We should have just taken SEC route and had his tutors take care of everything. Scotty is in mid-season form with plenty of candy for the baby blue crowd. Statues, tutors, what next……

  3. They were counting on him. That is too bad. He did not do his work but what about all the academic support these players get?

    • It’s really a shame….but academic support is still no guarantee that these players will pass their exams….

      • No, it’s not a guarantee. And without any knowledge of how his studies have gone in the past, and what classes he did not succeed in, it’s all speculation. Maybe there was no reason to suspect what in fact happened, maybe there was.

I think it’s a good time for Haden to review how such “risk” determinations are being made, and what is being done if the risk exceeds a given threshold. He’s the most academic guy in the room.

Where I think Scott is correct is suggesting that some position groups merit particularly high due diligence. I recall when USC lost a much-needed CB before 2012. Now it’s a much-needed TE.

If you were the CEO of the USC football program, what would be your thoughts about these events, and what would you propose going forward? At this point, that’s all you can do.

        • That’s a very difficult question, to be sure…..I am guessing that Haden is involved, as best he can, and that all of the tools and tutors for success are available to each of the players….There are always going to be borderline admits, academically….anyone remember Vontaze Burfict?…this may be why some players aren’t offered scholarships, which Scottie whines about incessantly, but the school can’t say anything for obvious reason….what are they going to say? We didn’t offer so and so because he’s too dumb?…errrrr…..couldn’t qualify academically……Haden keeping a closer watch on the academic side of things is a given…..

          • What you’re saying about college readiness is compelling. And the problem has worsened, I imagine, as USC has climbed the USNews rankings over the years. The academic demands intensify.

          • True…Not only do the academic demands intensify, but so does the scrutiny of the compliance team to ensure that the players are going to class and following through on their studies, which is a good thing….

  4. What do you argue Wolfie? Should he have had “a team of tutors” or should Sarkisian hold Cope-Fitzpatrick “accountable by not babying him”? It sounds like you’re just trying to make another mountain out of a mole hill. It’s not like Cope-Fitzpatrick is the first football player to ever be declared academically ineligible.

  5. Now this is a beat writer in mid-season form. Actual information and analysis on the TE position, no trolls required:

    • I read that article, too…..I am SO glad that Michael Lev is back on the beat covering USC football..

      • While Lev is not a Gary P (weRSC) or Ryan Abraham (USC football), he is certainly at least a Sigma better than the host of this site. All the up-to-date Trojan football haps here? Still no mention of the retreat taken by many of our top non-freshman players and several asst. coaches for Navy Seal Training. Our guys left immediately after Mon. nights practice and had to drive 100 miles to the facility. Lack of sleep while undergoing intense team-building exercises…but I suppose this is beyond the purview of El Lobo’s current informational dissemination agenda.

        • Nope!….. just objective reporting on the team WITHOUT bias or negativity!!!!!…or DRAMA!!!!… and last, but not least, without UCLA trolls, such as yourself….loser…

          • I’m struggling to find the bias in Wolfs report that your tight end is stupid and the administration should have provided assistance. And as for your loser comment, that would be you the last couple years. Ha!!

  6. “Now maybe that didn’t apply to Cope-Fitzpatrick.”……..Now what kind of an ignorant comment is THAT, Scottie?……..BTW…. do you and you minions comb through the archives for hours to find the LEAST flattering pictures of people, just to drive your point home?

    • bleauz, why not sent Scott one of your ugly mug shots? You know, the one where you’re wearing a number 69 SUCC jersey, sucking on a 3 x 3 cigar, and scratching your bum.

        • Hey bleauz, why wasn’t the SUCC Men’s Basketball team invited, to the Bahamas, for the Battle4 Atlantis Tournament Nov. 26 – 28? Was SUCC Basketball dissed? What’s the deal?

          • They went there last year, which I know you are already aware of…..Dissed?….. that’s not for me to say…….but thank you for following USC men’s basketball, especially during the offseason! ….. you’re a die hard fan!

  7. Tight end was thin before the season even began…. now, it’s razor thin, with zero room for error……

      • I think he just might be up for the challenge…….at 6’5″, he’s our tallest TE……

          • I’m guessing that his arms are longer than 7″, unlike your…..floppy weasel…..

    • Tight end will be a dead end for SUCC. A 7 -5 SUCC 2014 record seems generous, now that I think about it.

  8. Here’s what happens to HIGHLY Recruited U$C tight ends…..One of THREE things will happen (none of which are GOOD)
-You leave early and don’t get drafted
-You get arrested after passing out DRUNK in an ALLEY, after you steal a couple of Lap tops and stereo equipment.
    -You flunk out of school.
Don’t let this happen to you, don’t go to South Central.
    fit Un knuckleheads!
