Reggie Bush Still Thinks Relationship With USC Needs Fixing

USC coach Clay Helton wants ex-tailback Reggie Bush to return to the program, with last year’s pre-game visit to the team at the Pac-12 title game the first step. But Bush told Colin Cowherd today the relationship still has issues.

 
Cowherd: “You were flashy, and fun, and dynamic, and winning. Then all of the sudden, all the bad stuff comes in. And then you’re persona non grata at USC, ‘Bad guy Reggie Bush.’ Do you feel comfortable even going to practice (at USC) and being around (the program). There is this weird sense ‘Don’t talk about it with Reggie!’ What are you and USC like now?”

Bush: “We still have a relationship. They’ve asked me back a few times to come out and run the team out into the stadium and a few other things…”

Cowherd: “How come you don’t?”

Bush: “I don’t think I’m ready yet. There’s still some things that have to get fixed.”

Cowherd: “Like what?”

Bush: “I don’t want to go into details…(laughing)?”

Cowherd: “Be as honest as you can be…You didn’t feel you were always treated well at the end, right?”

Bush: “Yeah, that’s part of it. And then there were some other things too, but I think it’s slowly, it may get there. But like I said, there’s still some things that need to get fixed and some things that have to happen. But I will always, always have love for USC and that will always be home for me.”

  1. Bush has some work to do on his end as well. He handle the whole situation like a buffoon. He steps up and pays off Lake nobody knows about the whole tawdry situation created by his parents. He basically threw USC under the bus.

    • Agree. He could’ve immediately apologized or at least acknowledged the whole sanction Era while it was still fresh in everyone’s minds. What’s done is done. But both sides should somehow work together on patching things up. IN MY OPINION.

My personal though on the matter is, if some dummy wants to lend Reggie’s step father money on a wink of the eye fist pound promise. That’s not an NZAA issue , nobody ever made one payment on that house. The bigger issue is that a fluent parents of scholarship athletes go get loans to better their child’s college living situation all the time. What did Reggie’s step father do any different besides not use a bank?

        • It’s over. Reggie did wonders for our program. He changed it for the better. I’ll always keep both of my #5 jerseys ready for a big game!

          • The program would have thrived just as much if Reggie had suffered concussions in 2003 and retired from sports. LenDale and the stable of running backs would have taken up the slack. I can’t believe you would honor a man who destroyed a dynasty. SC would still be winning NCs if he hadn’t blown it for everyone.Do you also wear OJ’s #32 for big games?

          • OJ’s on a whole different island. But there’s a grey area here that we all forget. The parents were the adults and they were very aware of what could happen. They were greedy or impatient. Reggie was what he was. A kid who happens to have money hungry people around him. He made a big mistake, but I think we can get past it.

          • C’mon. He had everyone and they’re mommas pulling him for something. That’s not easy when you play for the #1 team in the nation and your parents are saying “please”.

        • That money Reggie’s Tata borrowed was predicated on Reggie’s future Pro FB earnings, not on Tata’s ability to pay the loan off by the sweat of his own labor.

          It’s against NCAA rules for student athletes to accept agent $$$$$$ payments based on their future FB earnings.

          • I’m a former NCAA student athlete, I know the rules. My problem is that it’s bringing economic class, and race into the issue.

          • Washington went down in 1993 for Billy Joe Hobart, a white quarterback, taking a $75,000 promissionary note from a non UW alum based on his future earnings as a pro.

          • Squatter, when students take out loans, they are betting against their future in their line of profession. The step father did this, not reggie.

    • Once all the scandal came to light in Yahoo Sports, Reggie could have stepped up like a man, admitted he had taken the money, car, diamond ear rings and free house in San Diego, and taken the fall for the program. He could have told the NCAA he was a young man who got carried away with all the fame and success and had made a terrible mistake He could have told the NCAA not to blame anyone else.

      Instead he selfishly refused to cooperate and stonewalled the NCAA and reporters. Matt Barkley and the other innocent players have suffered for his corrupt deeds the last 6 years.Now he has the nerve to say USC needs to make amends? For what?

    • Reggie dropped the ball and pretended he never fumbled. As great a pure talent and competitor as he was, he should be the last guy blaming anyone else. He bolted for the NFL with a big pile of dough and didn’t lift a finger to help SC or all the players who suffered for years because of his no-count parents and whatever he skimmed off the top.

      He was never that great in the NFL and it doesn’t exactly bum me out. It would be nice to see him welcomed back, but it’s his call and he’s the one who needs to take care of business. Sounds like he still hasn’t figured that out. So be it. In the end, he was too good to be true.

  6. A great start would be to have his parents pay back the school for all the costs. Then the parents stand up and take their share of the blame, then Reggie needs to admit his wrongs.

  9. I think that the players and the coaches would accept him. But I think that a lot of the USC fans have bad feelings toward him. If he thinks that he is going to lead the trojan football team out of the tunnel and have 90,000 fans wildly cheering the beloved Reggie Bush, I think that he is living in dream world. But that is not SC’s fault. That’s his own fault. A lot of fans are angry with him because he just couldn’t wait to get his big bucks and as a result of his impatience, the whole USC program has paid a huge price which we are still paying. SC didn’t screw Reggie. Actually, it’s the exact opposite. Reggie gave SC the shaft.
