What Are USC’s Concerns?

CAM.SMITH.COLOHere’s my top concerns for USC heading into training camp after talking to Clay Helton at Pac-12 media day. Defensive line, of course, is one of them. But linebacker is a big concern especially when Helton said it might take a year for Cameron Smith to be fully recovered from his knee injury. Full story here

  1. Oh how surprised I am that the blogger took a negative angle on USC media day.

  2. wow, wolfman, those are SIGNIFICANT issues!! when you said Southern Cal had concerns, you weren’t just whistling “Dixie”!!

(pssst, hey wolfman, do you think it was a good idea to mention Hell-ton is gonna be dropping a safety and loading the box on 1st & second down??? i think that old polecat Saban can read this too you know!!)

  3. What happened to all the big time recruits that Pat Haden was gloating about when he crown Steve Sarkisian, the best recruiter in the world? And didn’t Lane Kiffen sign a couple of small, but talented classes? Why is USC so dangerously thin at linebacker, and the offensive, and defensive lines ? What happened to the top players in all of those classes? All of this annual crying this time of year about the lack of talent , makes me want to throw up.

    • Sorry Fred, but nobody I know of on this planet ever thought Steve Sarkisian was the best recruiter. He proved he wasn’t at UW. Haden promoted him because that was his job. You bought into all that stuff? I’m surprised.

Who’s crying about SC’s talent? We’re loaded with a few weaknesses. Most teams aren’t loaded and still have weaknesses.

Pete Carroll’s best teams often had weaknesses. Against TEXAS for all the marbles, we were forced to play the always mediocre Tings at DB. One dropped a sure pick that would have won the game for us.

Helton’s working on fixing holes and the first class he signed was pretty amazing. I like his staff, though others don’t. We shall see. I don’t think Swann will put up with too much crap. Helton knows this and he’s not an egotistical control freak (the Kiffer) or an alkie like Sark.

Makes me a little optimistic – like always. Isn’t that what the pre-season is all about, except for guys like squish-faced SW?

      • The defense that played Texas was pretty beat up, Carroll did a heck of job just keeping them duct taped together, but they still ran out of gas.

    • We’re not dangerously thin at LB, Sark actually signed three 5-star LB’s with John Houston, Porter Gustin and Osa Masina and 4-star Cam Smith as the best LB group by far and they all got quality playing time as true freshman with the exception of Houston who was redshirted. They’re young, but talented. Let’s not forget who was coaching our defense last season and remember tha Pendergast will have more bodies to work with than his last time he was here. Now sun is also a name that everyone is saying will have a big season. We’ll be fine at LB.

      • Bubba Bolton bolts bozo u – he decommits from his dream Univ!, what’s up with that? – other bozo u decommits sure to follow.

What’s new on the Sammy lock Echols decommit?

      • Sw always recycles others stories ,creates alarm where little exists. We have excellent talent and depth at LB.We also are filling gaps on the DL with. Experience will be the obstacle, yet the schemes Pendergast employes will compensate. With Coach P we have someone who is excellent at adjusting to the opposition.Connor Murphy is up to 265 and climbing. He will be moved inside soon.
This season will be a chess game, for the first time in a while the coaches will be at work, not BS the media.

        • The last week Murphys name has been popping up a lot. Gustin has been taking him under his wing.

  4. What an honor for Coach Clay to have the opportunity to speak to The Wolfman!
Petesy, Kiffin, Sark & St. Pat gone, Wolfman still in the house.
Has anyone heard anything, anything at all from the new A.D. or St. Pat?

  5. As I recall Pete Carroll had a competition at all positions all of time. The second part of the article brings up the question of naming a quarterback. If either quarterback transfers because the other is starting they deserve all the success of Max Wittek

  6. Watch film of the player practices (as probably USC’s opponent’s do). Max Browne needs a big windup to throw the football which opponents will exploit early with pics. Kessler also had a slow release but couldn’t extend the field like Browne can. Take a look at film of high school commit Matt Corral and his rapid release and you will see why he has a chance to take over the job.

  7. I recall Pendergast is running 2 DL and 5 LB formation, is that correct? What about that? What are the pros and cons?

  8. My biggest concern is that USC will have a good year and live little for blogger and his band of trolls to talk about.
