Who Said Pac-12 Lacks Passion?

The prickly Sean Miller did not like Steve Alford calling a timeout with 1 second left in Tucson and a 5-point lead last month. So he called a timeout with 1 second left and an 11-point lead last night in the Pac-12 Tournament. And below is Miller’s post-game interview with the Pac-12 Network.

  1. Alford is an average coach with a good roster but next year he’ll be the same with an mediocre squad.

    • Wouldn’t call him average, maybe you’re being too kind…
Can’t really remember him doing more with less, it’s usually less with mora.

      • Ah now you’ll ignite ‘the 88 gun’ with that put down of Alford and esp. ‘Jimmah’…..

What now Guerrero? What say thee for the future of all things westwide? There’s always women’s gymnastics and softball right?

    • Hmm, let’s see. Alford has either the number 1 or number 2 recruiting class in the Nation depending upon who you ask.
Mediocre? You may be thinking of SoCal.

  2. Alford wants out to return to IN rumor mill – S B nation

” A couple things here. First, take these rumors for what
they are — rumors and reports are nothing more. This is the start of thecoaching silly season, and from someone who’s spent a little time working in collegiate coach representation, every agent’s looking for leverage. There’s lots of bullshit peddled, is what I’m telling you. This is merely a report saying Alford would have “significant interest” —much as I would have “significant interest” in being given one million dollars to write one blog post per day.

Second thing. This is a bad, stupid, bad idea. WE’VE BEEN OVER THIS.Alford himself was a Lonzo Ball away from being on the hot seat at UCLA. He’s already been run out of town at a Big Ten school once. In 12-some seasons in the Pac-12 and Big Ten, he’s managed exactly two Sweet 16 appearances and zero conference titles. His 2017 UCLA team has almost exactly the same efficiency metrics as 2016 Indiana, except with a
worse defense. His 2016 UCLA team went 15-17. Per the resume test, Steve Alford is a poor man’s Tom Crean. ‘ ‘

It’s always a mess at bel-air tech….Woodie oh Woodie why did you have to die?

    • Wake me up when Enfield wins something.

If Alford leaves, he leaves. I doubt that Indiana wants him back. They will probably go after Gregg Marshall at Wichita State who UCLA should have pursued 4 years ago.

      • You sound disappointed, and rightly so. But the reality is Ball was never going to play defense much anyway, and if your star doesn’t who will? Big test is the tournament, not that it seems it will be any different. The writing was on the wall last year, and if he’s not stupid he will be looking.

        • Ball actually does play defense, so you lost me right there. He was honorable mention on the all defensive team. Bryce would have been a better choice for your argument. They played a lousy game, so there is disappointment. Alford is an average coach that has improved his recruiting. Recruiting should not be that difficult at UCLA. So, if he leaves, he leaves.

          • Not that good though, and Sr is trying to sell his son in the media.. Epic fail.. Ball will get torched in the NBA.. FYI .. The Lakers will not draft this kid due to his daddy!

          • Lonzo will be a top three pick. I guess that means not that good to you. The problem is the coaching. Without Ball, UCLA is a .500 team. I suspect if he was a Trojan, you’d be predicting NBA success.

          • Nope.. I say it like it is, as a former student athelete at USC. He will NOT be a top 3 pick..kid doesn’t play defense and whats he avg 10 points a game.. At best a mid to late round pick in round one and a bust..

          • Well you are definitely going against EVERY draft board that I have seen. His dad’s chirping won’t bother NBA teams. They simply don’t have to deal with him and he has 2 other kids to worry about.

          • Perhaps compared to his teammates, just not what I’d call top flight defense from someone touted as a possible number one pick. Hardly that, what do they have, first, second and honorable mention? That’s four or five guards playing better than him.
Nonetheless, you’re right about recruiting, no one is coming for his coaching yet, but if you guys actually got someone who’d coach them up, it’d even strengthen your recruiting. Same as we’re starting to see with Coach Helton.

          • No, just a first team defense which is 5 players. His defense in league play was quite good. As far as Helton, he had a very good first year after a rough start. I’m not sure that is a large enough sample size at this point. Darnold is an exceptional talent that may only have one year left. Maintaining consistent excellence is the province of the elite coaches.

          • Trying to be objective here, I’ll admit Lonzo is a special player. He has ball handling and passing skills that you only ever see so often and he seems to relish the big moment.
I think he will have an impact in the NBA but the mechanics of his shot are very strange and may work against him.
I did see some of the Chino Hills game last night and was not nearly as impressed with his brothers. The one who’s a senior put up a lot of points but I don’t see him being a big time college player. He’s a little chunky and not very athletic. Neither of them seem to have anywhere near the ball handling skills that Lonzo does.

          • His shot is very odd looking but it works for him. For me, that would be the only question in the NBA as far as the midrange game. He shoots it well, even with that funky motion from deep. The middle brother will see a lot of bench time at UCLA, which leads me to believe that it won’t end well at all. I predict that the youngest will not end up at UCLA.

          • I hadn’t thought that far ahead but now I could see it playing out like that.

          • With a guy like LaVar, anything can happen. We have 6 recruits coming in next year and he is the least regarded of the six. UCLA is probably losing 4 players and possibly more. However, we will retain 2 of our top 7, plus return a solid player in Prince Ali that redshirted this year because of injury. I can see him being the 9th or 10th player in the rotation which is unlikely to sit well with LaVar that thinks all of his kids are one and done players.

The incoming SC class isn’t rated in any Top 25 that I have seen. I know you have Charles O’Bannon coming and one other highly regarded player. The key to Enfield in recruiting may be retaining all his players from this year. If Boatwright leaves, it probably doesn’t hurt you. He isn’t ready but he hasn’t added anything to your squad. Keeping Metu is most important.

      • Wake me up when Alford wins something big. Great Miller stuck it to him. For every action there is a reaction. Go kiss a Ball, and why don’t you stick to the ‘ruins board with all the other losers in Westwood. Time for you to get on the little girls gymnastic band wagon even though they are not ranked first. Maybe on second thought you could pump up that little gutty football team with another loser of a coach Mora.

        • Relax Steve. Keep Andy. He’s great. You think I love Alford? Think again. Our little gutty football team under Mora is about the same as your BB team. Middle of the PAC. Enjoy your day.

          • Like I’ve said before. The problem is Dan Guerrero. He can pick a women’s lacrosse coach, but when it comes to the the only two revenue-producing sports (men’s football and basketball), he has two guys who have a lock on third and fourth place in the Pac-12 every single year. Forget about the cliche’ “can’t win the big one,” these guys can’t even get to the big one. Both coaches are locked into long term contracts with big buyouts. What a joke.

          • Can’t remember if Guerrero was AD when we beat you 8 straight in football but he was when we beat you 4 straight.
Happy to compare him either results wise or ethically to St. Pat.
So far all your new AD (St. Pat the second) has done is complain about LaVar Ball’s logo on the UCLA website.

          • When was the last time UCLA played in the Rose Bowl Game. What coach said: “We Own This Town”. When was the last time USC football finished below .500. The last three years USC had less then 85 recruited scholarships and USC still beat UCLA 2 of 3. What team finished in the top 10 last year? The gap is widening between the two football programs. Yesterday over 200 recruits and parents showed up at Brian Kennedy field to watch spring work outs. When UCLA starts spring practice, on any given day, take a look and see how many recruits and parents show up.
Thanks to Guerrero, Mora has a 13 million buy out clause that’s gets paid over months. This guy will get paid for years for doing nothing. All done by a ignorant, doesn’t know how to negotiate a contract AD. All done, compliments of by tax payers of California.

          • Your fuucla football team lost twice as many games as it won last year. Nothing Middle of the PAC with a .333 winning percentage. Now get lost.

      • Doubt th3y would marv but hey look at all, save Harrick, all the ‘also rans’ that bel-air tech attempted to work the ‘woddie’ magic since he left back in 1975……

        “If only….why? Gone are the days….woddie….Nel…..Sam…..corrupt 4th estate with the cover-up…..gone….sniff sniff…..’

  3. Didn’t the Bruins learn anything from Slick Rick calling a ridiculous timeout at the end of a game?
It doesn’t end up well for them and they end up complaining about things.

    • They need to clone the peckerhead but also, don’t forget to clone Sam Gilbert too!

  4. Hmm I see ‘the 88 gun’ is all over the place defending the Lonzo Ball aka the ‘also ran’….man what’s the latest line on his ‘lights out’ performance? 10 points?

‘the 88 gun’ is always sniffing around for anyone to engage him as long as said target understands for ‘the 88 gun’ woodie the peckerhead is 1. god and 2. bel-air tech always has a reason why they tank.

    Go ‘the 88 gun’

    • Put down the vodka, Comrade. Your boy in the White House is aligned with your Comrade Putin. Don’t celebrate too much!!

Regards, 88 gun. (Apparently a new moniker from a former Soviet Republik)

  5. Yeah, right Sean.
That’s why you threw the ball out to half-court and let a screaming F U chant with your team. Class act, Lumpy.
