Revised CIF-SS Eastern Prediction

It was brought to my attention by some twitter followers (@CallmeEPJ and @RyanMart12) that I had some key mistakes. Ramona got in on a coin flip ahead of La Sierra, and it was suggested CIF would avoid a rematch of San Gorgonio’s 62-0 win, but first-round rematches happen all the time. But in order to keep leagues away from each other until the semifinals, I tweaked it. I had Apple Valley in twice and another not in at all before.

Hesperia (Mojave River No. 4 at-large, 6-4) at No. 1 seed San Gorgonio (San Andreas No. 1, 10-0); Burroughs (Desert Sky No. 2, 5-5) at Tahquitz (Mountain Pass No. 2, 8-2); Rialto (San Andreas No. 3, 6-4) at Norte Vista (River Valley No. 1, 9-1); (Silverado Desert Sky No. 3, 6-4)  at No. 4 seed Oak Hills (Mojave River No. 2, 9-1); Ramona (River Valley No. 3, 4-6) at No. 3 seed Citrus Hill (Mountain Pass No. 1, 9-1); Apple Valley (Mojave River No. 3 at -large, 8-2) at Victor Valley (Desert Sky No. 1, 7-3), Carter (San Andreas No. 2, 7-3) at Moreno Valley (River Valley No. 2, 8-2), Hemet (Mountain Pass No. 3, 5-5), at No. 2 seed Serrano (Mojave River No. 1, 9-1).

CIF-SS Eastern Division prediction

One of the perhaps oddest things I enjoy doing this weekend every year is try to predict what the playoff brackets will look like. As I am very tired and bleary-eyed, I am only going to attempt 1 of those tonight.

New this year is announcing the at-large teams the night before. So perhaps I can adjust this Saturday night if their at-large teams don’t match up with mine.

Anyway, here  is my prediction on how the Eastern Division will look, provided I am correct in thinking the Mojave River will get both wild-cards: Apple Valley and Hesperia

La Sierra (River Valley No. 3, 3-7) at No. 1 seed San Gorgonio (San Andreas No. 1, 10-0); Apple Valley (Mojave River No. 3 at-large, 8-2) at Tahquitz (Mountain Pass No. 2, 8-2); Rialto (San Andreas No. 3, 6-4) at Norte Vista (River Valley No. 1, 9-1); Burroughs (Desert Sky No. 2, 5-5)  at No. 4 seed Oak Hills (Mojave River No. 2, 9-1); Hesperia (Mojave River No. 4 at-large, 6-4) at No. 3 seed Citrus Hill (Mountain Pass No. 1, 9-1); Apple Valley (Mojave River No. 3 at-large 8-2) at Victor Valley (Desert Sky No. 1, 7-3), Carter (San Andreas No. 2, 7-3) at Moreno Valley (River Valley No. 2, 8-2), Hemet (Mountain Pass No. 3, 5-5), at No. 2 seed Serrano (Mojave River No. 1, 9-1).

CIF-SS East Valley championship game moved; my CIF championship game picks

If you haven’t already heard, the CIF-SS East Valley Division football championship game pitting Rim of the World and Ontario Christian on Friday night has been moved to Citrus Valley because of the threat of inclement weather at Rim.

Here are the games that include Inland Empire teams, the dates and times and my prediction. San Bernardino County teams in bold.

Friday’s Games
INLAND DIVISION
No. 2 Corona Centennial (12-1) at No. 1 Vista Murrieta (13–0), 7 p.m.
Prediction: Vista Murrieta 31, Corona Centennial 27
Storyline: Team from the I.E. advances into the state championship semifinals.
EASTERN DIVISION
No. 3 Serrano (13-0) at No. 1 Perris Citrus Hill (13-0), 7 p.m.
Predicton; Citrus Hill 35, Serrano 28
Storyline: Serrano can’t quite contain Citrus Hill’s explosive spread offense and the Diamondbacks drop to 1-3 in CIF-SS championship games
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
No. 1 Ontario Christian (13-0) vs. unseeded Rim of the World (11-2) at Citrus Valley HS, 7 p.m.
Prediction: Rim of the World 41, Ontario Christian 27
Storyline: Rim running back Jacob Taylor becomes the sixth back in U.S. history to go over 4,000 yards. He finishes with 4,077 yards and Rim continues its offensive roll. Rim’s tough league pays dividends.
Saturday’s Game
CENTRAL DIVISION
No. 3 Kaiser (12-1) at No. 4 Moreno Valley Rancho Verde (10-3), 7 p.m.
Prediction: Kaiser 15, Rancho Verde 14
Storyline: Kaiser coach Phil Zelaya decides to go for 2 late in the game rather than kick the extra point and a tie and go to overtime. He gets it and the Cats win the title.

CIF-SS semifinal football results; Finals set

Friday’s CIF-SS semifinal results, with San Bernardino County teams in bold.

Perhaps the most surprising was the margin of the Rim victory. I predicted the Scots would win, but not by 49 points. By the way, our staff writer Ed Castro had Rim’s Jacob Taylor with 355 yards rushing and seven touchdowns, which would put him at 3,750 rushing yards and 54 touchdowns for the season in 13 games, although the official stats aren’t into maxpreps.com yet. Regardless, he is more than likely the No. 2 rusher in the nation according to maxpreps. That was his spot entering Friday’s games.

I am impressed by the quiet run Kaiser has made. The Cats were nearly forgotten after getting blown out by Summit to open league, but have come up clutch in the last few weeks in winning 7 in a row. Interesting stat: In its last 9 games (during which the Cats are 8-1), Kaiser has scored 14 points or less five times (going 4-1, including all 3 playoff games) and scored over 40 points in each of the other four games (going 4-0).

INLAND DIVISION
Vista Murrieta 34, Rancho Cucamonga 0
Corona Centennial 46, Upland 36
Final: Corona Centennial at Vista Murrieta, Friday
CENTRAL DIVISION
Moreno Valley Rancho Verde 35, Menifee Paloma Valley 28
Kaiser 13, Romoland Heritage 7
Final: Kaiser at Rancho Verde, Saturday
EASTERN DIVISION
Perris Citrus Hill 37, Hemet Tahquitz 0
Serrano 21, Carter 14
Final: Serrano at Citrus Hill, Friday
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
Ontario Christian 34, Jurupa Hills 33 (OT)
Rim of the World 69, Banning 20
Final: Ontario Christian at Rim of the World, Friday

This week’s CIF-SS semifinal football picks

I am out of town this week, but keeping close tabs on this week’s CIF-SS semifinal games, so here are my predictions for Friday’s games.

Game I’m most interested in? Banning-Rim. That’s because I was at the first matchup and Banning’s Sty Hairston and Rim’s Jacob Taylor are two dynamic runners who were nearly unstoppable in a 49-41 Banning win, combining for 800 yards by my count. Now they’re back at it at Rim. My prediction is also that the winner of that game will win the CIF title.

I’m also very interested in Carter-Serrano, obviously for a very different reason. These teams have been on a collision course since early in the season, but haven’t played. Both lost in the semifinals last year, in different divisions.

INLAND DIVISION
Vista Murrieta 42, Rancho Cucamonga 17
Corona Centennial 52, Upland 35
CENTRAL DIVISION
Rancho Verde 30, Paloma Valley 27
Heritage 24. Kaiser 21
EASTERN DIVISION
CItrus Hill 41, Tahquitz 34
Serrano 17, Carter 14
EAST VALLEY DIVISION
Ontario Christian 40, Jurupa Hills 32
Rim of the World 49, Banning 45
