Alex Bourret’s goal with 1:04 left in overtime gave the Reign something they’ve been waiting a long time for: Back-to-back wins at home.

Jordan Morrison completed a four-point game by corralling the rebound of a David Walker shot behind the net, then spotting Bourret streaking through the right faceoff circle for the game-winner.

That capped an impressive comeback by the Reign (17-28-2-2), who had trailed Elmira by scores of 3-0, 4-1 and 5-3. Morrison, Chaz Johnson, Shawn Collymore and Kyle Kraemer also scored goals. Johnson finished plus-3 and was on the ice for all but one of the Reign’s goals.

The six-goal outburst matched a season high, and the win brought them within seven points of seventh-place Victoria (21-25-1-2) in the Western Conference standings.

Beau Erickson was fighting the puck early, but benefited from some third-period adjustments that allowed the Reign to spend more time in the offensive zone and outshoot Elmira 10-7. Erickson finished with 27 saves.

Timo Pielmeier (22 saves) started the week as the Ducks’ backup goalie, but finished on the losing end of his first game with the Jackals.

Because I didn’t mention it in the paper: The Reign were sporting vintage Forum-blue-and-gold Kings jerseys, with a crown on the front of the sweater and the Reign logo on the shoulder patch. They looked sharp.

Because they were auctioned off after the game, they won’t be worn again. And because they play in the Eastern Conference, Elmira won’t be back this season after tomorrow.

The Reign would probably like to see both the jerseys and the Jackals back.

Also, if you’ve been double-dipping in my Ducks blog, you will have noticed that Bakersfield Condors goaltender Timo Pielmeier is in Anaheim. The Reign host the Condors on Sunday, but Pielmeier is expected to be back by then; head coach Randy Carlyle said that Jonas Hiller is supposed to rejoin the Ducks in practice Sunday and he probably won’t need three goalies. 

Reign at Bakersfield tonight.

As reported elsewhere today, the Ducks signed ex-King Kyle Calder and assigned him to Bakersfield, where the Reign (2-2) are headed for a game at 7 p.m. tonight against the Condors (3-2). No word yet on whether or not Calder will be in the lineup.

Some more notes:

  • The Reign lead the league on the power play at 44.4 percent (8-for-18).
  • Ontario’s Greg Hogeboom has four goals and six points in his last three games.
  • Bakersfield rookie defenseman Stu Bickel had a career-high two assists on Saturday at Victoria.
  • Condors left wing Dan Sexton is second among ECHL rookies with seven points (3g-4a).
  • According to the Bakersfield Californian, the Condors will roll out some different lines than the Reign saw during their opening weekend.
  • The Reign won’t have to face goaltender Justin Pogge, who shut them out on opening night. He’s in Anaheim while Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere rehabs a strained groin, while Timo Pielmeier gets the start in net. Pielmeier allowed seven goals on 19 Reign shots in the Reign’s 8-2 win Oct. 17

Reign 8, Bakersfield 2

In a resounding response to their opening-night shutout loss, the Reign exploded for eight goals from five different players, and chased the Bakersfield Condors’ starting goalie in an 8-2 win at Rabobank Arena.

Greg Hogeboom notched a hat trick and added an assist; Adam Henrich had two goals and an assist, Tim Kraus had four assists and Curtis Darling stopped 34-of-36 shots in his first appearance between the pipes. The Reign were outshot 36-24 but still chased Bakersfield starter Timo Pielmeier, who stopped just 12-of-19 shots.

Mike Egener scored on Justin Pogge, last night’s starter, in the third period, and Peter Lenes and Jon Rheault also scored for the Reign (1-1).

A disciplined Reign squad needed only to kill three penalties, while taking advantage of 3-of-10 power-play opportunities in the win.
