Glendale man fatally struck by truck after exiting car on 210 Freeway in Pasadena

PASADENA — An 18-year-old Glendale man died Thursday after he was struck by a truck on the Foothill (210) Freeway after exiting his vehicle following a solo-car crash, authorities said.
Arno Shakhmalian was pronounced dead at Huntington Hospital an hour after the 9:20 a.m. crash on the westbound 210 Freeway, just west of Windsor Avenue, California High Patrol officials said in a written statement.
The roadway was still drying from rain earlier in the morning when Shakhmalian, with an 18-year-old La Crescenta woman as a passenger, was westbound on the freeway, according to the CHP.
For reasons that remained under investigation, Shakhmalian lost control of his 2000 Lexus RX300 and spun out, ultimately coming to a rest facing south in the two right-hand lanes, officials said.
Traffic began to slow and stop behind the Lexus and both Shakhmalian and his passenger exited the vehicle, the CHP statement said.
“Suddenly, (Shakhmalian), with his passenger to his rear, began to run in a southwesterly direction across traffic lanes toward the center median,” according to the CHP statement.
A 40-year-old San Bernardino man driving a 2006 Chevrolet box truck was unable to avoid striking Shakhmalian as he ran into the path of the truck, according to the CHP.
No other injuries were reported.
The crash remained under investigation by officers from the CHP’s Altadena office.
