Have you been paying attention to the high school soccer scene? If so, who are your players of the year?

I have a strong feeling who I’m considering for the boys and girls soccer players of the year, and a list of candidates under consideration for the all-area teams. But obviously, playoffs and how teams and players perform in the post-season is where you can make your strongest arguments. But with a week left before the knockout rounds begin, who has impressed you the most?

Daisy Duran from San Dimas High Shool is having a player of the year type of season with her all great all around skills and game leadership

  • Wells

Tatum Lockett from Diamond Bar. She has over half of her team’s goals; and the Lady Brahmas are close to their second straight league championship.

    • I watched Lockett last week, very impressed how she’s always around the goal

      • SGV Futbol

I agree Fred, Lockett is a stud! Hope you give some love to Los Altos’ defense who shut her down and ended her 18 game scoring streak. Senior defender Daysia Avery deserves consideration for All-Valley! Returning from an ACL tear, she has been a rock for the Conq defense!

    • I second the vote for Tatum Lockett!

  • Soccer Fan

I would agree with both of those players. I would just add Jessica Lopez from Sierra Vista with 28 Goals 32 Assists and Yazmin Montoya from Bishop Amat with 8 Goals 8 assists

    • Solid mention’s soccer fan, those are two of my favorites.

    • LadyDons

Jessica Lopez is now 33 goals 34 assists.

Jasmine Loera is instrumental in defending and sending the balls forward. Cynthia Hernandez has done an amazing job defending and her sister has been a great help in the middle also. Then there’s Daizy Ruiz, 20 goals and 31 assists.

  • Soccer Fan

On the boys side I would say Ben Jimenez from Damien with 8 Goals 4 assists, Michael Flores from Sierra Vista with 15 Goals 1 assist, and Mario Interiano from Walnut with 11 Goals 2 assists. All these boys would be contenders for the POY.

  • Wells

One criteria that should get very strong consideration is MVP of a league.

  • what do I know though?

If you’re going off numbers…Ashley Gonzalez from chino hills has 24 goals and 10 assists. If you ever watch chino hills play (toughest league around), Meilissah Rangel is one of the most talented and exciting players in the state! Meilessah has 9 goals and 16 assissts. Oh, and she gets double teamed every game.

    • Double-teamed? What’s this basketball, lol. I haven’t seen Chino Hills this year. What I do remember from last season is they were young and loaded so I’m not surprised at all how well they’re playing. Both players you mentioned are great. I’ll lean on the Inland Insider, Tom Kiss, to help out identifying their best talent this season.

      • As far as Girls,
Chino Hills has Jr Ashley Gonzales scoring goals, but you have to recognize who gets her the ball, and that would be Sr Melissa Rangel and soph Amanda Ball,
Claremont has the reigning player of the year Madison Stark, who still gets a lot of attention from defenses, so who has stepped up for the Wolfpack and helped carry the scoring load??? Jr Hannah Chua
        For the Boys
Damien’s Sr’s Brett Jenkins and Ben Jimenez have gone from Cal South Premier to leading their team to 1st place in the Sierra.
Claremont has one of the fastest forwards in league Sr Kelly Collins, but watch out for Steven Mancia
Others to watch out for are South Hills Sr’s Jorge Ramos and Grayson Iwasaki, Chino Hills has Sr’s Jordan Chilton and Dylan Kiss, Ayala has Sr’s Ryan Rama and Brandon Gracia

        • Also for the Boys, Former Arsenal Academy team members, Claremont’ Sr Ben Santia, and Chino Hills’ GK Jonas Carranza has only allowed 7 goals in 7 league games and they are 3-4 !!

  • Terence Harris

I have seen a few play this year that I am impressed with:
Kennedy LaNier #6 Defender – St. Lucys
Kindal Cubak #8 Forward – Glendale
Erin Harris #18 Defender – Walnut
Tatum Lockett #13 Forward -Diamond Bar
Yizmen Montoya #17 Mid – Bishop Amat
Daisy Duran -Forward – San Dimas
those are the girls that stand out that I have seen.

  • sgv2010

One guy that is I would like to mention is the center mid from Sierra Vista, Alexander Piceno #8. Solid numbers 5 goals with 10 assists. Rumor out of Baldwin Park is that he has caught the eyes of UCONN scouts.

I think Emily Castellano from charter oak high school is the best girls soccer play in the valley as well as the smartest. She doesn’t have a great team to surround her like Chino hills but she’s an amazing player. She has a full ride scholarship to more than 15 universities across the nation. She is aggressive and arguably the fastest girl soccer player around. She is an easy pick for MVP.

    • Ricky Rivera

Charter Oak is 1-7 in league, the MVP would have to come from a team with a better record IMHO. No need to throw the team under the bus.

  • Pomonaroller

Have you seen any keepers make a possible impact for MVP like Newton did last year for Claremont?

  • sgv2013

Damien has eight clean sheets (and two games where the only goals surrendered were on PKs) in all competitions due to the strength of its center defenders, Garrett Souza and Mike Sanchez.

  • walnut has a few of players worth mentioning, forward Mario Interiano, midfielder Danny Hernandez, and sweeper Andrew Almeida….

  • Hacienda league!

What about forward Mateo Lares , senior from Rowland high. His team is 3-6 in league that’s why you probably haven’t heard to much talk about him but he’s a one man team. Out of 27 goals he has 18 , he has 11 in the hacienda league which includes playing against diamond bar , walnut , and Los altos and he leads the entire league. I’ll add again his team his 3-6 but he still leads the league , he always has up to 3 defenders on him at all the games but still finds a way to score… Check into that

When considering Player of the Year, one has to consider overall performance. The stats only tell part of the story, they don’t tell you have many goals were avoided by a strong defender or the foresight of a midfielder that lead to the goal scoring play. Walnut’s defender Andrew Almeida, midfielder Danny Hernandez and striker Mario Interiano, Rowland’s striker Mateo Lares and Los Altos’ defender Alex #23 are definitely in the running in the Hacienda League.

  • Terence Harris

    Madison Stark #11 – Claremont

    Ariana Holmes #18 – Claremont

    Erin Harris #18 – Walnut
Daysia Avery #16 – Los Altos

    Goal keeper
    Katelynn Oshima #99 – Walnut

  • in the stands

If you are going to talk about girls defenders the conversation has to include Abi Celaya from San Dimas. She is a driving force on the team and an all around great player who never gives up.
